I think there were some modified coin mechs. I remember back then, Cinemark Tokens used to work in Chuck E Cheese Machines, untill it got to a point where they were doing some investigation work and somehow managed to modify the mechs to only accept Chuck E Cheese Tokens.

You forgot about real coins that were drilled and had strings attached to them, to allow to drop the coin in and then pull it back :) There should be a metal gate to prevent that.

I thought it was a blade that cut the string so that the quarter still goes in.
