A tip for people servicing these scopes the hybrids can overheat and fail if you operate the scope with the cover off for too long. This is because the cover directs the air over the fins. If you must operate it this way use an external fan to blow across the fins to keep the hybrids cool. Replacements can get quite pricey since the only supply is from parts scopes.
I keep having to explain to my wife that scopes are like shoes, you cannot have too many. Nice to get the low hanging fruits now and again. Good find well done.
Most of the time these scopes are more than worth fixing. The only time they are not really worth fixing is when the unit has been dropped and boards and the CRT is all broken. Long as it is a few bad parts and a matter of finding them it is worth fixing.
It's a Tektronix, it's ALWAYS worth repairing. Because of the test specifications the MOD use, some TE is still made custom order. The prices are horrendous, but the TE calls for that model, and NO OTHER, so that is what gets used.
Sorry but had to chuckle as you were struggling to remove the back panel - it's always that last screw that happens to be right in front of you that is the holdout...don't know how many times I've done exactly the same thing taking something apart! Looks like you got a good deal, look forward to the testing!
What was your winning quid bid? Curious about your comment about ebay because there are plenty of these selling there in similar non-working condition in the $50-$70 range plus shipping (equivalent to 70-100 Pounds). But ebay sellers are notorious for lack of full disclosure/ misrepresentation. The guy from Austria who runs the BEB TH-cam channel recently bought a vintage 561 which looked good in pictures but turned out to be full of sand and rust, blown tubes and missing parts.
You are correct in that many eBay sellers don't give full disclosure, however, usually it's not intentional. Even when it is, eBay has structured things over the last few years so that the buyer has NO risk (as long as you pay with PayPal). If an item has been misrepresented, you get full reimbursement, including return shipping charges.
1959Berre I find they only blow if the psu has high ripple. So far it's working great. If a tant does fail I will recap fully. Thanks for your comments.
Wear Safety Glasses. I have had equipment, on bench, where the Tantalum failed, by “launching” off the PC Board. Missed me, but hit the ceiling. Some bench techs have reported bursting spraying the area ...
Yep keep the fan on it whenever the cover is off. I learned that the first time I took the cover off the 2465B. When I tried to do the cal I got some gibberish on the screen where I should have had alpha-numeric's. The scope cursors will not only give you time, the default setting, but frequency as well. If you press the time button and then press both the time and volts button at the same time the scope with display the frequency. The frequency displayed with be that of the coursers not the signal. Some of the bravos will measure time and frequency and a whole bunch of other items as well. There are two intensities, one for the scope signals and one for the readouts. The readout has a left and a right and off at the center straight up. I think right was all readouts and the left I think was courser only, any way it tells you next to the knob. You're going to have a lot of fun with this scope Simon. Love mine at work. The main intensity drop of is normal on these scopes just go slower when you get close to full CCW. Oh you can adjust the Focus, Antag and Read out to almost be in perfect focus, but you have to do a lot of paying around with it going back and forth, but it will come in if you repeat the adjustment a lot. Thanks for sharing. Keith Noneya
If you see the line of dots at the bottom of the screen, this means that the calibration is not finished. I have the the 2465 and 2445 I have the same problem at 2465 Because of the calibration CAL 2 expired This indicates a problem in the vertical cursor. Check the cursor Of the vertical and horizontal give you the correct measurements. my have 2465 is Calibrated but the horizontal cursor that measures the voltage is not It is then necessary to perform calibration of voltage values ( CAL 2) 500mv 200mv 100mv 50mv 20mv 10mv 1v 10v and then to finish cursor cal ( 0 to 100%) Best regards David Az
Hope you don't mind me commenting on another scope a Telequipment D75, the D83's were the same. Talking about dots in the trace, in my experience of them always fixed that by removing the power suply and cleaning the spacing postst that the PSU is suspened on they oxidise and cause that. Never had one that didn't work properly after cleaning the contacts. Circa 1977 to 82 when I left the bench. Still miss it ! Am retired 5 years now :)
Definitely worth it as a personal bench scope for personal use, however if you intend to repair it for sale, not really worth the parts and labor that you put it.
Just wondering if a scope has the x axis collapse after five minutes of normal operation, what fault is it likely to be? Or where does one start to troubleshoot?
TEKTRONIX 2430 DIGITAL OSCILLOSCOPE 2 CHANNEL 150MHz one channel faulty. When set sine wave signal showing on channel 1 input is swopped to channel 2 no response shown wondered if you could point me where to start trouble shooting.

Unless it is going to cost you an arm and a leg, yes its worth repairing. You mention these other auction sites but stopped short of naming them, it's not a secret is it? I have been looking around for another credible alternative to Ebay myself so I for one would like to know these other sites that you have come across, please.
Leonard Butcher Well the next video will be along soon but let's just say it works. Regarding in auction sites I signed up to ibidder. But they are in the UK.
Dear Simon, I' m Marcelo from Brazil. I have an Oscilloscope Tektronix 2445B and it presents a distortion on the channels 1 and 2. My english is very poor, so I can not describe it well. Could you please take a look on the video and maybe help me to find out how to solve the problem? There are just 2 videos on my TH-cam Channel and both are demonstrating the distortion. Thank you in advance. Marcelo Silva.
Tam Hanna I have used that scope you years at work. It's good as an analogue scope bit only really usful in digital for the simplest of waveforms. Would like to see a video of yours.

+Bushougoma Agree. Partially on the storage models. The ccd runs dangerously hot after 10 mins without cooling.

Congratulations! A working oscilloscope.

I was getting a bit frustrated as the workshop is so hot in the summer. But kept my cool!

Yes, Looks like a good buy.
Replace all tantalium caps, they are notoriously unstable; when they short out - and they do - bad things happen.

Test 04 fail I read is likely a dead battery that maintains the internal memory and calibration data. You need to replace the battery and recalibrate.
Whilst you were trying to get it to show anything I'm sitting here hoping you remember about not overheating the hybrids
TheDefpom Well spotted. there's a fan on the table right of the scope. However they run pretty cool on this analogue scope. No ccd's to fry.

The row of small dots at the bottom of the screen indicate that you have a problem that the 2445 is not finish
calibrated
Hi, ues this was in the CAL mode, After CAL the display was correct.
If you see the line of dots at the bottom of the screen, this means that the calibration is not finished.
I have the the
2465 and 2445
I have the same problem at 2465
Because of the calibration
CAL 2
expired
This indicates a problem in the vertical cursor. Check the cursor
Of the vertical and horizontal give you the correct measurements.
my have 2465
is Calibrated but the horizontal cursor that measures the voltage is not
It is then necessary to perform calibration of voltage values
( CAL 2)
500mv
200mv
100mv
50mv
20mv
10mv
1v
10v
and then to finish cursor cal ( 0 to 100%)

Hi David, thanks for commenting. The unit had its CAL void after the battery expired. See the other videos I did,

Have a look at the deflection circuit first, particular the connections to the CRT neck.
Always scope for more 'scopes.
+Andrewausfa I have an excuse this time. It's analogue!
if you still have that old oscilloscope that was sold for parts you might be able to take modules from it to fix that analogue oscilloscope

Attention: your Iwatsu is both digital and analog!
Tam Hanna Yes Tam. But digital only to about 1 Mhz.
AFAIK nope, you have 20 MS worth of sampling speed. I can check with my DS-6612, the 6121 is on the repair pile.
