    Photographers, don't be afraid to direct your model/subject. Don't regret not saying something while your shooting. When you get home and look at the photos, you'll regret that you didn't tell them to tip the top of their head or turn their shoulders and give less or more shoulders to the camera. Feeling comfortable doesn't equate to looking good in the final image. Meaning, it might feel comfortable for a model to slump in a headshot and have their arms resting on a table but most of the time this comfortable way of sitting will shorten a model's neck and nobody wants to look like they have no neck. My favorite is to pose people without it looking posed. Let them do some shots where they feel comfortable but then direct them into a pose you know will be the winning shot. Basically, make sure they are not too slumped and comfortable in a headshot unless they like to look like their head just sits on their shoulders and they have no neck lol.

    At 13:50 when she is backlit, how did you get her face bright with no shadows. I don’t see you using any type of reflector. The lighting is amazing.

  • @doctorocpus

    Some technical details, which are not mentioned in the video: in the first half, while using back light, the photos are yellow although it is not sunset; this is because of the white balance. On the second part where Jessica is using direct front light, the images are dark, that is because she had to use high shutter speed, Otherwise the models face would be over exposed.

    Ride Wireless Go x 2. Suggest you get the lav’s with it. Also get a Saramonic 100x and put it on your video camera. You can then attach both receivers to the Saramonic 100x, then feed direct to the camera. It’s not nearly as complicated as it sounds. This will improve quality of sound, you can adjust gains for you and your subject separately and it improves your workflow by not having to sync later. This set up will change your life. You can also feed it through an external recorder if you want. Good luck with it. PS love your energetic style you bring to your video.

    Many thanks, Jessica, for your lovely video. I notice that your own hair back (11.13) has an image of a face (we all have one or more on our head backs) that has a lot of hair being thrown right across the right eye of it. Might that be a subconscious reason why you hate/dislike hair going across the face?

    18:17 That one might be my favorite! I've been looking into golden hour portrait photos in nature such as fields and this video helps! I love the softness and mood of this sorta light and nature though the trade-off is can't always see eye color clearly. Actually what time of day were these taken? I can't tell.

  • @calmchaos658

    For a beginner photographer what setting/priority do you recommend learning on? I’ve been told aperature.. what do you think

    • @JessicaWhitaker
      @JessicaWhitaker  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      manual!

    • @SheaJordan
      @SheaJordan 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it's best to eventually use on Manual, but I started with aperture as well! That way you can choose your depth of field, especially if you're shooting portraits, and let the other settings automatically adjust for you. However, make sure you learn about ISO, White Balance, and Shutter Speeds eventually and don't rely on your camera to set those for you, especially if you want to really enhance the look of your photos in the future! 💛

    All of these videos are super frustrating because you choose someone for these videos that are super comfortable in front of the camera and know what they're doing. I have awkward teen girls that don't already know how to pose themselves or play in front of the camera. You literally didnt have to tell this woman anything. It's not very helpful to those of us who aren't shooting models.
