      you know jack a lot of the video kind of reminds me of modern day chine accept they have a plan b, c through whatever if someone kicks the bucket. did it modern china stop the cycle of appointing and deposing rulers well yeah but that whole death, secret police, and strict intolerance yeah that just feels like 2021 china that will last for god knows how long with the major economic side of well you guys kind of need us to make your products since most of those products the people aren't being paid or if that at most about a fifth of what they could make in the same industry in the states if they're lucky. it's like the world with china right now is stuck at the worst spot in the mandate of heaven terms rather than look at all this innovation and knowledge being spread which unlike countries in the middle east china doesn't really have an excuse to be that way since it's not like they had a former empire carved up by some stuffy british or frenchmen from across the globe think yeah that'll be fine.

      The Qing actually were pretty good, they presided over a 200 year Golden age and took China to its greatest ever territorial extent (its modern borders plus Mongolia) the population and economy also reached unprecedented heights, and there was a cultural and artistic boom during the 17th and 18th centuries.
      They also happened to be the dynasty in charge when China was outpaced technology and dunked on in the 19th century, which lead to the end of the dynastic system. So they do understandably get a bad rap sometimes.

    Several things:
    Firstly, Zhu Yuanzhang's orginal name was Zhu Chongba(朱重八), literally Zhu Great Eight, and his father's original name was Zhu Wusi(朱五四), literally Zhu Five Four. They were so poor they couldn't afford proper names lmao
    Secondly, although Hongwu was a remarkable administrator, he made two terrible economic decisions that would have centuries-long consequences. First, he banned private foreign trade, establishing the infamous sea-ban, which would not be lifted until 1567. In the meantime, many merchants who could have made an honest living were forced by this piece of legislation into piracy, which would continue to haunt the Ming. Secondly, Hongwu did not understand inflation. When he wanted to reward a loyal or competant minister, he would literally go money printer go brrr and hand over wads of cash. Inflation would prove to be disastrous for the Ming and it would constantly plunge the empire into economic crisis. It was so serious that the Ming abandoned paper money altogether, going back to using silver as currency (which was actually one of the reasons for restarting foreign trade in 1567).

      @@gorilladisco9108 Zheng He's expedition was for the Ming new trade route and to expand its authority over the sea.
      After Zhu Yuanzhang abolished nearly all foreign diplomacy. Yong Le wanted to reestablish but it cost too much money and resources for the bankrupt empire. (The threat of Nomandic starts to return as well)
      In the end, the next emperor abolished all the sea fleet and possible trade routes because the empire couldn't afford the trade and colonization.
      Let's Merchants did the trade themselves while Pirates ran rampant across the four seas.
      So Yong Le's dream of expansion ended while the Ming dynasty became stagnant and weaker until its downfall. (Ming Empire bad seeds start to ruin the empire bit by bit)

As for what Manichaeism you said, it was all made up in The Story of Dragon-Slaying. There are also many emperors who believe in Buddhism. Xiao Yan, Emperor Wu of the Liang Dynasty, Empress Wu of the Tang Dynasty, and Emperor Yongzheng of the Qing Dynasty are all believe in Buddhaism, which will not delay their implementation of Confucianism.

    • @emptank
      @emptank 3 ปีที่แล้ว +125

      It lasted for like another 200 years so yeah. China didn't live or die by the quality of it's emperors. Thanks to the Confucian beauracracy and exam system ensuring that the government was mostly run by people who at least had a vague idea of what they were doing, bad emperors could be kept out of the way with endless ceremony and their own harem while the government got to work. The odd actual good emperor made everything better and could start a veritable golden age, but the government could muddle along as best it could no matter what. I think they had one more super good emperor who kicked off a Ming golden age. But the rest were just good enough to not screw things up. The Ming would be brought down not by the skill or lack there of by their governing officials but by a combination of economic instability brought on by conflict between China's merchant coast and rural south and a military invasion by Manchuria, aka: Mongolia 2.0 now with more guns. There really wasn't much anyone could've done to stop that.

      @@shanedoesyoutube8001 A Chinese civil war where a general was so determined to hold the city that in order to stave off starvation of his soldiers they started eating the civilians.
      Yin Ziqi had besieged the city for a long time. The food in the city had run out. The dwellers traded their children to eat and cooked bodies of the dead. Fears were spread and worse situations were expected. At this time, Zhang Xun took his concubine out and killed her in front of his soldiers in order to feed them. He said, "You have been working hard at protecting this city for the country wholeheartedly. Your loyalty is uncompromised despite the long-lasting hunger. Since I can't cut out my own flesh to feed you, how can I keep this woman and just ignore the dangerous situation?" All the soldiers cried, and they did not want to eat. Zhang Xun ordered them to eat the flesh. Afterwards, they caught the women in the city. After the women were run out, they turned to old and young males. 20,000 to 30,000 people were eaten. People always remained loyal.
