Liars Clubs were quite common during the day. Special unwritten rules of the great subtle lie were observed, and nobody was ever called a liar. In fact, a feigned belief in another person's lie was itself a lie, so agreement was encouraged. During the evening of untruth telling, the borders of believability were explored, usually accompanied by increased consumption of spirits. This was the origin of what became known as The Great American Whopper! My grandfather gave me his book called The Liar's Club upon his death. It was written by, and signed by Lowell Thomas. The book is an excellent documentation of this old tradition of telling a good lie and getting away with it. It is up to you to decide whether I am lying about this.

The "Frostless" is not a water pump Jenni. You lift the handle to open the valve that allows piped water to come out. When the handle is down the water drains out of the pipe so in cold Icy weather the pipe does not freeze. Hence the name "Frostless".

That ‘water pump’ thingamajiggy in people’s yards isn’t a pump, it a lever operated water valve they call ‘frost proof’ . You see them in places it freezes a lot, and in campgrounds for the same reason.

I was researching a trip to Austin, Nevada and I thank you for the informative video!
I visited Austin on September 22, 2022, one year after your visit.
The Loneliest Highway Visitor & Welcome Center has a room for informational material but it contained very little material. Austin was still using the entrance hallway of the Lander County Courthouse (122 Main St.) for their visitor material. A significant problem is that the Courthouse was only open Monday thru Thursday. Check the internet as the schedule seems to change. Austin published a brochure called “A HISTORIC JOURNEY THROUGH AUSTIN NEVADA” (printed 2018) and the brochure was in limited supply. An earlier brochure listed the historic sites with numbers 1 thru 16 (The bronze plaques you see on the buildings). For unknown reasons, the new brochure (2018) lists the historic sites with letters A thru M. The brochures also listed the businesses that were open at that time of publication. The Austin Chamber of Commerce might be waiting to see which shops reopen before printing more brochures.
Below I noted your video timeline and some additional information:

    2:47 & 30:50 - Loneliest Highway Visitor & Welcome Center
Near 81 Main St. (Hwy 50)
    2:40 & 25:25 - St. Augustine Church (#3)
    113 Virginia St.
    Built in 1866.
    2:53 & 7:21 - Austin Library (# 7)
    88 Main St.
The oldest bank building in Nevada. The bank was in continuous operation as a bank from September 1863 until July 1962.
3:03 & 18:35 - Lincoln Highway Posts. There were 3 posts but one near the Champs gas station is missing. One of the remaining posts is located in front of the Lincoln Motel (60 Main St.), and the other is located in front of the Austin Historical Society Museum (180 Main St.).
    5:42 and 34:21 - Old Firehouse (# 8)
    67 Main St. (Hwy 50)
The building was originally a brewery and converted to a firehouse in the early 1900’s.
    5:46 and 35:07 - International Hotel (# 9)
It is also Nevada Historical Marker No. 208
    59 Main St. (Hwy 50)
    The oldest hotel in Nevada.
    2:04, 10:28, and 30:17 - La Crescenzo Mercantile (# 14) (Currently Grandma’s Restaurant)
    99 Main St.

6:04 - Old houses on the hillside
See Wonderhussy Adventure TH-cam video #345, posted in 2019. She looked through the windows of the houses.
    8:27 - Old City Hall (# 6)
    90 South St.
    Constructed in 1866.

    11:04 - Lander County Courthouse (# 16)
    122 Main St.
One of the oldest courthouses in Nevada. The cornerstone was laid in 1871.

11:16 - The Official HWY 50 Survival Guide “The Loneliest Road in America” is a little booklet (2.75” W x 5.5” H). There are (rubber) stamp locations in cities along Hwy 50 (Carson City, Dayton, Fernley, Fallon, Austin. Eureka, Ely, and Baker). If you collect at least 5 of 8 stamps, you could send in a page from the booklet to the Nevada Commission of Tourism and receive a certificate stating you completed the trip on Hwy 50. Check to see when the stamp locations are open as the days/time can change. In Austin, the only stamp location is in the Lander County Court House. In September 2022, it was open on Monday thru Thursday, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.
    16:20 - St. George’s Episcopal Church (# 5)
    156 Main St.
    Constructed 1877-78.
    22:30 - Old Methodist Church (# 4)
    135 Court St.
    Erected in 1866.
27:01 - Woodford Mfg. “IOWA” model yard hydrant
As mentioned in previous posts, they are variable flow outdoor faucets for use where temperature drops below freezing.
28:05 - Austin Churches (Nevada State Historical Marker # 67)
The marker is located at the corner of Main St. And 7th St.
    29:41 - Masonic and Odd Fellows Hall (# 15)
    105 Main St.

Sites not shown in this video are:
    Gridley Store (# 1)
    247 Water St.
    Lander High School (# 2)
    130 6th St.
    Stokes Castle (#10)
This site is also Nevada Historical Marker No. 59
Dirt road turnoff near Champs gas station
    Nevada Central Turntable (# 11)
Off of Austin Roping Arena Rd, south of Hwy 50
    Austin Cemetery (# 12)
On the north and south sides of Hwy 50, near junction with NV-305
    Old Hospital (# 13)
This now a private residence near Reese St. and Cedar St.

I've driven through Austin many, many times and always enjoyed it on my Lincoln Highway trips. It's always been a little 'abandoned' and is 'open' when they feel like it. I believe that gas station was closed a few years ago, as the owner who owns the other station closed it after buying it. At least, that's the story I was told a few years ago. It's defo one of those towns you need to watch your speed. The sheriff is quite busy there.

    • @JenniGives

The Nevada Central Railroad came south from Battle Mountain to the bottom of the hill in Austin. From that depot, there was a horse/mule drawn railroad that went right up main street to the silver mines above the town (you can see the old mines if you drive east on 50 to the top of the hill).

I live in Sparks, Nevada about 4 hours to the West. The drive across Highway 50 to ELY and beyond is one I have made numerous times. It is one of my favorite drives. Few people and little traffic. The L signs denote the Lincoln Highway, the first transcontinental highway in the US. The passport you spoke about is one promoted by the Nevada tourist bureau or something to that effect. As you cross the state from Carson City to Baker you can have this passport stamped in every city as well as Great Basin National Park. If you get at least 5 stamps you can send it in and get a certificate or something saying that you have survived " The Lonliest Highway." I got 7 stamps,, but decided to just keep the stamped passport. It's a fun souvenir. The first time I made the journey probably 30 years ago the highway was much loneier than it is today, but traffic volumes are still very low. The roads are excellent and there are several towns and other attractions along the way. I highly recommend the trip. Thanks for the video Jenni. Although I have been through Austin a number of times, I have only stopped to have the passport stamped or get some snacks. During my last drive to Utah I did, however, stop at Stokes Castle for a short time. Your video show much more detail than I have seen. I imagine that most of the folks who live there like it just as it is and don't want any franchised businesses in town. Not that any would go there with the small population. Apparently, there are many hiking and mountain biking trails around as well.

I guess that this is a great town if you don't like people, where is everybody? Population 200, no one around. They must sleep late and take a nap in the afternoon. Every person who moves there, increases the population by a half a percent. Interesting as always, love the name, Nevada's answer to Austin, Texas. Thanks for a unique video Jenni.

I think the "L"s are indicating that it is a Lincoln Highway.

Let's cross our fingers that it disappears off the map. I grew up there and every moment off it was pure agony. Also your review is garbage and inaccurate.

It seems like it must of been hard on you growing up in such a small town.
Might want to talk to a professional about your agony.
Hope you have a good day.
