Hi Joe - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. I'm amazed at the sunlight and clear blues skies that yiu experience in December. We always have clouds rolling through but against that we never get numbing cold or lake effect icing that you Ohions experience.
That day was very deceptive. Same as in my furnace video. Cold as ice! Things are a little back to normal, very cloudy and not as cold. Thanks BR!!

Ahh, Sunday morning video... I like how you’ve really developed your rhythm of sawing while the previous log is being split. Very efficient!! Another good video, Joe. Keep an eye on that fuel tank with the sawdust build-up. I don't know if they coated the outside of the tank with anything, but if they didn't, you might want to. The wet dust can get corrosive over time.

The sawdust. Could be sold as mulch.
Even the wood under your first and second conveyer belt, once you put that trough your wood chipper.
Bark goes. On the same pile.
That thing is extremely efficient. That being said, it seems to suffer from the same issue most box wedges have. Lots of smaller slivers. You just don't get those using a vertical. My feeling on that is I like the small slivers to start fires as I don't burn 24/7 I start 1 or 2 fires a day depending on the temperature. Not everyone thinks that way. From your previous videos I know you sort and stack what you just split so that isn't your finished product.
My point to this is a machine that cuts and drops the round in front of your vertical wedge may be a little slower but the yield would have to be better. To me that combines a lot of the expensive machines to sort out waste. Definitely more hand work but the wood is as perfect as you want to make it.
I've had this blocking table idea in my head for years but never acted on it. I would think you could adapt it to any size operation or splitter. I certainly can understand your love of that machine, one person can process a bunch of wood per day.
As for a cord size you need to mound a 12 x 6.5 dump trailer unstacked. A 14 x 6.5 is level unstacked. That was stacking 3 face cords and tossing them into the trailer.
The perfect split is a little slower than a traditional knife but...I'm being serious...how much does that really matter? Not much to me. The extra 15 min it takes is nothing at the end of the day. It is about as fast as you can imagine making a trailer of wood! Honestly the cleaning processes aren't important to me bc I am not a split and sell business but at least they are there if I ever wish to adjust in the future. Joe, what a great setup and I know you are not finished with the perfect operation. I'm sure that is part of the fun of not knowing the what will occur next, yet being able to adapt as the sole proprietor of OWB. Keep the logs rolling. Joe, I've been thinking about your 2WD truck amid how you've said that it often gets stuck. I've driven RDW sports cars for years, including many winters. I think it's the tires more than the truck. If you get a set of good tires on that truck, I think that you'll be surprised.
Possible Frank. It has tall, skinny 10 ply now, not exactly flotation tires! LOL The genetics of this truck however just makes it horrible off pavement. Open rear end, 8' bed, touchy gas pedal.

That thing rips ,no resplitting wood just cycle it again and keep going.the kubota D902 is a great little engine,it sounds great sitting at 3600. 17:30 you mention selling the sawdust I’m not sure but around here that has no value as bedding or ground cover since it contains bar oil .Have you been burning it in the outdoor wood boiler.When I was making firewood I was able to feed my outdoor wood boiler just from scraps from Firewood.
I don't have a plan for the waste yet John. I just don't have the motivation now. One day I hope.
Great video Joe nothing beat's sitting down watching you running the japa. Can I ask am guessing you do but all your trimmings from when it gets bounced over before it hits the trailor and the conveyer belt do u throw them in your furnis? Might be way get rid them. 🏴👍🤔

Joe seeing you all bundled up to operate your processor. Makes Me wonder why the Man with a plan doesn't have an enclosure built up from the platform with a small hot water tractor cab heater plumbed into the processor engine.

Scott... I do use my mini dump trailer but lately I have been using it for other stuff. I just haven't felt like making a tub to sit underneath it. I allow myself to be lazy from time to time lol. I do pull out good sticks for kindling too but this time of year I have been buring it in my furnace or dumping it on the ground
Really considering looking into getting the 405 with the perfect split. Seems like it would be a perfect fit for my firewood business model (smaller precise splits). Hopefully I can find one to demo somewhere. From 1 state over 🤘 keep up the videos.

With the air intake for the engine being that close to the sawdust discharge of the bar/chain, how often are you having to clean the air filter?
I've never checked it come to think of it. I will do it today and let you know. JOe
@@ohiowoodburner At 50 hours, probably a good time to do a full service on the engine as well.
Save the sawdust in used feed bags. The straps make them easy to move and then reuse elevated to load a pellet mill. With the move to wood pellet stoves for cooking and smoking and pellets can be stored for ease of use. It beats trying to burn in cardboard boxes. Great machine ...now for a pellet mill manufacturer to partner with.

I do harvest the nice pieces out for kindling. I don't have a process set up yet for my waste. It goes into my dump for now.

That is the case for processors although the infeed on the 405 is more forgiving than others I have worked with. That hold down clamp plays a large role with getting crooked logs to fit

Is the 405 available without debris shaker and conveyor? I have not been impressed with it yet. It is just loud, causes fatigue to metal from shaking and doesn't seem to do much compared to the disc cleaner. I would think it would significantly reduce the over all cost of unit to just not have it. IMO Have a great weekend, Joe!
I don't think it comes without it Wayne. It can be disabled tho. Honestly I does remove a lot. Obviously if you had a cleaner like mine you wouldn't need it but one or the other would make you better with your product if you were a split and sell business. The big disc cleaner isn't mine
@@ohiowoodburner Maybe they can go to a disc cleaner on the unit itself in the future. I ran a saw with 6 different sized circular saw blade heads in a saw mill , for several years. It had a huge trough underneath it with a 30 foot shaker which feed a conveyor into a scrap box outside. As the unit aged (3 years plus)the shaker was constantly having stress issues and being welded,plus the noise was obnoxious. Probably nothing wrong with your set up and it is just me. My past experience with this type of system was not a good one...Have a great weekend, OWB!
Have you taken a look at the Japa 700. With it's Circular Saw Blade, it cuts through firewood logs very fast !

Hi Burl - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. I've had the Hakki Pilke Eagle with a gas powered 700mm blade and auger for many years. Its very efficient for cutting logs up to 7 inches, not the 10 inches quoted. However, like all bladed machines they can be dangerous - I was hit in the neck by a small ricocheting log piece and was lucky to survive the incident without disfigurement save for a handful of teeth.
Dang Joe , you're getting quicker, smoother on that machine.. It looks like it's almost human proof! That should cut your time down tremendously.
Thanks Greg. You do need to keep an eye on the chamber bc a Log can occasionally pull back crooked etc. That happened to me me a couple times to where I couldn't hit the stop button fast enough and the ram shoved the log thru sideways. LOL.

Why don’t you have a bin under your disk cleaner? I would think it’s a chore to clean up under that unit. I enjoy your videos.
I have a mini trailer I keep under there but I have been using it for other things. I have been pretty lazing making an IBC bladder that could sit under it. I get that way sometimes
With the saw dust would be good for horse stalls

Just a thought. With the volume of sawdust you’re generating how about making some fire starters out of it. It’s something you could easily hire some more high school kids for too. Just buy toilet paper rolls and paraffin wax. Each roll could be cut into thirds or quarters to increase yield. It would go well with your bags of wood chips.
There are a number of things I can do with my waste but I just don't have any motivation right now. I'm sure that will change eventually. thanks for the nice post Matt

Bio Kleen for your Diesel engine on your 405. My diesel mechanic told me his skid steer grew algae in his tank and destroyed his engine. Let me know what your rep says maybe.

Might be a good idea to have a leaf blower near by to blow the wood chips off of the machine when you are done.

Wouldn’t it make sense to park your ATV dump trailer under your disc screener rather than letting the chafe fall on the ground, then you could run that shit out to the boiler and get it gone. We all need to work smarter , not harder.
I do that when I'm not using my trailer. I have a sled under it now that I pull to my gaps im filling
I like this 405, but the 435 is even better.
by my calculations the 435 is better than the 405 by a score of 30!

I think so. The more knives hitting the wood the more waste you get. These logs were pretty old however so the bark was coming off more than green logs. Thanks for watching Pat! I used to work in Chicago.
How many years before you break even from the total cost of the 405+ attachments do you figure it will take??
I have boot strapped my enterprise Fritz. All the equipment you see was paid cash except for the Axis and log deck. The cleaner is not mine. I traded in my old 365 for the 405 as part of the transaction. I do my accounting more on a practical level so if I'm looking to restore my $$ back into my account I would think it will be there my the summer.

This load was stacked by my HS helper. All of this was stacked together except the oak.

Joe, do you find that a box wedge makes more waste that other wedges and that the increased pace makes it worth the loss?
I think it does make more waste. Anytime you increase the number of knives per cycle you create more. If the Perfect Split is slower it doesn't really cause me any grief. I mean, serious, how much can you gain by making a cord of firewood in 40 minutes vs 55 minutes? It's fast enough for me. LOL!!!

A 6 way knife would be twice as fast on logs smaller than 12" diameter
It has traditional 4, 6, and 8 way knives. One of my older vids shows its use. I will try to get more in the future. Yes it is even faster!
Can't you sell the sawdust to animalstores, like for rabbits and hamsters, they have this in their cages.

What is the max diameter that you run through that processor just curious thank you in advance
max is 16" Usually you can't get up to the max with a lot of processors bc any type of crook, knots etc will ruin your day. The 405 has a pretty wide infeed and the hold down clamp really helps you keep logs fed properly. In some of my old vids I show a log that is literally scraping the hood as it was fed. That was pretty impressive LOL

How much an hour with perfect logs
I had an unedited vid back in the summer where I made JUST under 1 cord in 30 min. I think with perfect logs around 14" in diameter I could get darn close to two cords... Maybe more.
