Thanks Mato. Brilliant game excellently commentated on. I don't usually go in for French Defence games as Black but this has inspired me to give them a go.

    Hi Isaac.
At 3:40 if Ne4 then dxe4. And if Rxd6 then Rf1+ followed by mate.
It would work for white after playing h3, but black moved his queen after h3 :)

It seems to me that if White had played 14. Qf3 instead of Qg4 Black might have been in some trouble since he can no longer castle kingside. I'm sure Steinitz had a plan for that but what's your opinion?

yeah, dont know too much about rybka but i think on fritz if you don't let it analyze long enough it will give you tactical mistakes

at 3:48 would Bxe3 be a good move? if rook takes then you just checkmate him using the rooks

    after 18. h3 why not Bxe3 (rock can't take, because if 19. Rxe3, then 19. ... Rf2+ 20. Rxf2 Rxf2#)

well odviously they wouldn't take- but I'm mainly saying to take it to be up material and to get rid of an important defender, to checkmate soon after. the point is not to trick them or anything, anyone who knows anything about chess wouldn't fall for that.

    You need to see one move deeper, Ne4 dxe4, Rd3 Rf1+, Rxf1 Rxf1#.

Key to this attack is Black's total control of the center.

The key to this attack is the last name - STEINITZ !!

True, but if RxD6 winning the queen black can play RF1#
    The line looks like this,
    NE4, dxE4
    RxD6, RF1
    RxF1, Rxf1# checkmate
