    Sage, this video is old and I was an out of shape undergrad student when I first watched it. I wanted to say thanks. I finally got my BQ this month and wanted to come back to this video to share. I ran track and cross country in high school and was nothing special, finished comfortably in the second half of the field. But I always wanted to run a marathon and one day qualify Boston. I had a ton of injuries: Osgood Schlatter disease, then IT band syndrome, then post tib tendonitis, and then a stress fracture in my fifth metatarsal. But since I saw this video, I took my 10k time from 40:40, to 39:04, to 37:41, to 36:09. Half marathon went from 1:52 to 1:26, to 1:21. Made my marathon debut at Chattanooga on a hilly course and ran a 2:57.21. Going to come back later this year and see if I can't take a few more minutes off it and hopefully go to Boston in 2024! Thanks again for this video, this was the first thing that got my head down and mapping out years of training!

    My wife ran her first marathon to check it off her bucket list. Ran less than 30 miles a week and beat the Boston qualifying time by almost 18 Mins. Not sure how she did it. It took me 3 tries and I nearly killed myself trying to do it.

      Less competition in womans (thus easier qualification time) and of course good natural talent and decent series training.

    Ran Miami 11 years ago. 3:48 gun time (3:45 and change chip time) as a 50 - 54 runner. Was 10 minutes short B.Q. Looking back, I didn't have a solid game plan. Getting back into it as a 60 - 64 year old. Will need a sub 3:50 (several minutes faster then that to actually get in). Glad I found these videos. Very useful.

    Really like how this guy went right to the "equivalency tables" and basically said if you cant run "x" for a half you ain't gettin' it done for Boston.
    That is exactly the proper way to initiate somebody who wants to do this.
    I qualified twice for Boston and didn't start training for it until I hit a specific 5k time that indicated I could do it comfortably if I put in the proper training, mileage, etc.
    Again, he was right on the money, I averaged low to mid sixties per week when I was training.
    There are no "miracles" in doing this, if you can't hit certain "benchmarks" at shorter distances it's just not going to happen. I feel bad for people who train for Boston
    and don't understand this most basic of ideas. Nowadays, more than ever, people want to say "me, too". Well, fine, you want the commendation but don't want to put in the effort.
    Boston doesn't work that way. Ok, so you want to enter Boston as what I call a "charity case", where you raise money, and they give you an entry. That will get you to the starting line.
    But you didn't "qualify", so you're not fooling anybody, except maybe yourself. Pathetic.

    That's my big goal, to qualify for the Boston Marathon. I've got to witness it a year after the bombing and I got inspired to run more. I've done 2 half marathon so far and hope to do a full in April.

    this was exactly what I was looking for run a 130 half. tried the LA full last year and broke down at the 20 mile. ended up with a 4 hr finish. gonna try again in Feb. I will incorporate this into my workout thanks sage

    Great training talk! Nice to hear about BQ even from an elite athlete.
    I think a good training talk topic would be warmup routines for tempo or interval workout runs. Maybe even amount or length of time to spend based on intensity and weekly mileage base.

    Great talk Sage, thanks so much for all your posts. As a future training talk I wanted to throw out the idea of how to "train to train". Planning on running a Nov. marathon to go for BQ, will use your 16 week plan, but what do you recommend prior to starting? Do regular speed work? Tempos? Long runs? Etc. Thanks again

    Hey Sage if I ran my first marathon at a 3:31 but I want to run a 3 hour marathon by October, should I train while having that 3:31 as my time to refer to when trying to figure out pace or should I use the 3 hour pace?

    I can barely even run 5 miles a week. Shin splints + plantar fasciitis are chronic issues. It even sometimes hurt to put pressure walking from bed to the kitchen...

    i run 60 miles a week, i can run more but my easy tempo becomes really slow..like 70-80 second slower then mymarathon tempo per KM

      +arunasimas so 4:15/4:16 per km for 3 hour marathon pace i believe. The good thing is our SageRunning "BQ" marathon plan (and all Training Plans) come in Metric versions as well!

    Not to brag or anything, I'm a big fan of the danish Jante's law, but i just ran a marathon in 2:54:59, without getting my milage over 30miles per week. I might be an exception, because I'am 18 and Sage is propably assuming that the avreage runnr he's talking about is 30-40years old?

    What do you think about Marathon Training advice that say long runs over 3 hrs do more harm than good, and there is little additional aerobic benefit running more than 3 hours. I am doing a marathon training plan with a max of a 16 mile long run every other week. It takes me about 3 hours to complete the run. Is there a benefit in doing an 18 or even a 20+ mile long run in practice about 6 weeks out?

      +AnyaEightySeven I read evrywhere that even 2,5 h is top volume for long runs. In example in Daniels "Running formula" he says that such long run shold be xx miles or 2,5h or whatever takes shorter time.

      +lewis donovan now the new Tracers or Claytons (2016 release)...but I've run 3:02/km for 8 x 1km in the Cliftons (also race marathons in the Cliftons/Huakas)

    Hi Sage, what percentage of total millage should my speed workouts be? Was reading in a book by james fix he recommends 5%. I feel for myself it should be more than that. Training specifically for half-marathons at the moment.

      +Julian Lesek 20% is the general rule. Jack Daniels is more specific as to how much percentage a specific type of quality workout should be of your weekly mileage but doesn't give an overall figure.

      +Julian Lesek It's variable in terms of %! In my book "The SAGE Running Secret" I have a chapter on the 80/20 ratio (something a lot of coaches preach). However, during pure aerobic base recovery it would be 0% at other times, with a range of 10-25% perhaps...but it changes as the weeks and months progress. 80/20 on average though I'd say for the bulk of training. Note also that I am considering anything above the Lactate Threshold/Uptempo intensity (about 80% effort/max HR) as "speed workouts" and not just Vo2max intervals or really hard sessions.

      You can check out his training log on strava.com which is updated daily after his runs. He does do some shorter 4-6 mile runs as his second run each day, but for his main morning run, he usually logs 8-12 miles.

      +avorobiev Half marathon actually does get more qualifiers (more post-collegiate 10km guys that move up in distance)_...but from me (coming from ultras) the marathon mark is more attainable. In 2012 I qualified with a 1:04:32 half first, but right now I'm only in 1:06 shape! A 2:17 sounds a bit "easier."

    I am currently a cross country runner at 16 in my high school. I have am almost done with my marathon training for my first marathon in 6 weeks and hope to get sub 3:30. Is it plausible for me to run a 3:02 in a year if I keep my milage in the 40s during my XC season and 50-60s during my marathon training next year as well as get a sub 19 5k to get up my speed?

    An average of 7 minutes per mile to qualify? Wow. So you have to run it twice? once to qualify and then the actual race?

      Any certified marathon will qualify if you get a certain time.

    I'm curious, is there any different of the Asian people with European people for set their personal best for BQ in the same training menu and in the same body condition?
    Since I feel like the BQ are kind of impossible for myself as Asian people. I'm recrational runner for almost 3 years and my personal best for FM just under 5 hours :)

      It's probably not likely. Sage is an ultrarunner, so he doesn't generally train for marathon distances. Plus, that last bit of speed increase is exponentially harder to get.
