After Joshua completed his residency in pediatrics at the Albert Einstein Medical Center in New York, he accepted a position teaching pediatrics at Hadassah Hospital - the Hebrew University School of Medicine. The Ritchies moved to Bayit Vegan. There Joshua met the Amshinov Rebbe, Yerachmiel Yehuda Meir Kalish and became his personal physician and driver. In 1971 he even began wearing an Amshinov spodik, an honor usually reserved only for homebred Amshinov Hasidim. Shlomo had known the Amshinov Rebbe from the 1950s. The Amshinov connection was a key link for Shlomo to the Hasidic haredi world even during the difficult years when he was ostracized because of his unconventional modes of outreach. The Amshinover warmly welcomed Shlomo, inviting him to sing and play his guitar at Amshinov celebrations, and praising his outreach efforts.

How Prof. Joshua Ritchie and his wife Lilliane hosted Reb Shlomo. In 1976, the Ritchies were part of the pioneering group of eight families who settled the Moshav. It was the intervention of the Amshinov Rebbe that proved crucial in the establishment of Me'or Modi'im. The Ritchies returned to Los Angeles in 1978 and their house at 613 N. Las Palmas was Shlomo's home base whenever he visited the LA area. Joshua estimates that they hosted Shlomo a total of about 40 times.

His peyos are twisted in the wrong direction. A very rare occurrence indeed!
