    Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture.
    With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

    Hi Zach, you are such a fine example of the "work ethic" and the need to get jobs done even if unpleasant. I would tend to procrastinate and that doesn't work on the farm. Thanks for showing the "less than fun chores" as well the super neat chores such as seeding or combining. I have a question on the micro-managing. You mention "down to the acre level" but it seems to me that you are adjusting to even smaller pieces of land -- which is incredible when you think back even a few years ago. Thanks for making the investments that keep food production high at a reasonable cost to the consumer. A great video. Thanks!! - Dean from Edina

    • @MillennialFarmer
      @MillennialFarmer  5 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Thanks again Dean!! Always appreciate your thoughts! The acres are managed at a 1-2.5 acre level but usually the programs we use, use an algorithm to blend the acres together based on averages, so there aren't hard breaks or 'lines' between the acres for certain applications. Did I make that clear as mud? Maybe it wasn't even what you were asking?!

    The secret mad skills of a crop farmer! I spent my teenage years on a farm and helped out my uncles whenever I could. I mostly mastered backing up anything with two wheels but anything with it's own steering continually frustrated me. One of my uncles would always come to my rescue and made it look so easy it made me mad. Now I watch you back up the deep bander with the trailer behind it! Respect.

As soon as the boy saw me, he ask his mother if he could meet me. I had no clue why so I ask. As it turns out I had my MN Millennial Farmer shirt on. The mother explain to Me Her Husban works for a Family Farm in Middlesex Co Va in Waterview Va on the Rappahanock River. Every night or every new Video which ever comes first. Dad and Son watch you. To the voice of David Attenborough: A adult male Millennial Farmer approaches and starts work on his food storage system to get ready for corn eating season, their species will be very busy in the next coming months but they will be storing food for the winter. Soon they will enter hibernation as the cold winter approaches they will crawl into their caves and settle down for the winter and wake up back again for the warm spring weather.

      ... This species does not hibernate like other hibernating mammals. If we take a look inside the hive, we will see them working along on what looks like maintenance tasks. We do not know if there is any significant energy savings to their method. It seems that they offset the lack of energy saving with a steady stream of hamburgers that keeps them going through the long cold winter.

    On the augur spout that fills the truck, there is a Y fitting on the end ( I think you called it a reducer). The flanged dead end of that Y fitting can be used as a clean-out port. An iron bar of sufficient length such as 5/8" rebar could be inserted through a hole of adequate diameter in the dead end and run up the down tube. We welded couplers on the rebar to allows us to add lengths easily. A man basket for the skid steer is a quick ans safe work platform for heights. The clean-out port can have a swing over cap for when its not in use.

    Maybe you can put a building over the pits that would be awesome.

    when you go to do the final cleanout of the pits, you should have a tripod, and harness for safety and follow a no entry rescue, with someone watching who can lift the person up if incapacataed. you may not know what is in the pit below the plane of the ground. Oxygen deficiency is more the problem then smell. Be safe love watching the channel and want to continue watching it happily.
    The auger by the bin that you are going to put concrete under might need drainage any way, perhaps a ditch witch or backhoe, and some drain pipe to an area or drywell to drain out. Some cost good for drainage, put filter or strainer for corn, or french drain?
    Show us a spreading video on the cover crop, when you can, Love to see the harvest. It had Parsnip, and horseradish ohh yummy. :)

    I have a question about combines. Is there a drainage in the hopper if water would get inside it if the combine would be outside when it is raining or do you just let the water stay there until it's time for the next harvest and let the water get out with the grain? Great vids Zach keep up the good work!

    Wondering why you don’t have Randy the master pipelayer run a 4 inch tile from each pit out to your field to drain all that crap out? There has to be a way to drain the water and crap out without losing your crap down the tile. Just a thought.

    Why do you drop the air bags on your hopper bottom when you off load

    Why not build small pole building to keep the pits covered? This would also you load demi's in the rain/snow. 🤷🏼‍♂️
