    Not going to lie, I really do miss the old 2D animation films. I catch myself wanting to re-watch the old animation films because I really just miss that aspect. Nothing wrong with their 3DCG films, just really miss the old style of animation films.

    • @tecknowledjee6933
      @tecknowledjee6933 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I said this for a while. I think 3D films ruin the emersion of an animated film because it goes into reality for the sake of visuals. I know 2D animation is expensive and that the last couple 2D films weren't the greatest (besides Treasure Planet, Princess and the Frog and Emperor's New Groove). They didn't fall off cause they weren't 3D, they fell off cause they were really average or boring films and were terribly marketed, which 3D animation won't solve. 3D animation can definitely work, but for a company like Disney, 2D was their niche and that shows when you compare it to Pixar. I'm personally more of a Disney guy admittedly, but Pixar is amazing at what they do. Point being, the two can intertwine and experiment with the latter's animation, but I fully believe that Disney was at its prime with the 2D animation and Pixar is great with 3D. It got to the point where I still get Disney and Pixar movies confused cause they've done so many 3D films. As for story and plot, they need to look at the Renaissance films (The Little Mermaid through Tarzan) and the other scattered gems like Treasure Planet, Fox and the Hound, Robin Hood, etc,.

    • @toxicsugarart2103
      @toxicsugarart2103 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Same. I also feel like 3D animation ages much faster. Watching something really new like Encanto, and then Tangled or Frozen right after is so jarring because there’s so much improvement over the ten-ish years. Not that the 2D animation has never improved, but the 80 year old 2D stuff doesn’t look quite as obviously dated as the 10 year old 3D stuff. Maybe because 2D doesn’t have to look realistic and stuff, idk.

    I agree with what you say here Brian. I am getting tired of all these live action remakes and over-saturation of products on Disney+. I think something that needs to happen is use the vault principle for theatres. Stop giving us 'live action' remakes of beloved movies, and just re-release the original beloved animated film with (if necessary) updated animation. I would much sooner go see the original Treasure Planet or Hunchback of Notre Dame on the big screen multiple times than having to sit through a remake of it. Disney knows that people love these movies, so just re-release those to theatres and i think that would be far more effective and loved than these bad live-action remakes. I will always love Disney products and will continue to watch, but they need to make changes if they want me to get genuinely excited again.

    • @shortfilmguy
      @shortfilmguy ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@benceszarvas5464 Releasing on home media also would be a good choice. The problem with that for me is less and less people have DVD/ BluRay players, and it is rare to find a fully functional VHS player. A way that we can fix Disney+ is allowing the viewer to choose the version of the movie they want to watch. For example, I would choose the 2001 re-release of B+B so that I can watch the Human Again sequence.

    • @benceszarvas5464
      @benceszarvas5464 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would be also great. Every release of B + B is different. The original theatrical version never had a physical release. The VHS version's screen ratio butchered and the colors are different. The Laser Disc is what I heard the most faithful version to the original but still the colors are slightly different. Then the 2001 release drastically changed the colors and added the Human Again and Cogsworth's different expression. 2011 onward used this version but once again changed the colors. And now the Disney+ version once again different becausr they cut out the human again but kept the door closing scene. It merges with the bath scene better for sure but still different. I wish Disney would allow all version to be reachable espically the theatrical because that's diiferent from the physical "theatrical version"

    Disney has the possibility to recover, so easily. But they need to choose a side. To me; it seems like they’re torn between doing original, new inventive things, and being forever stuck in the past.
    The 90s and early 2000s were amazing years. The mouse could not be stopped. The Renaissance, Princess and the Frog, Wreck-it-Ralph. All of them absolutely fantastic movies.
    The problem came quite ironically with their most popular villain. Maleficent was a success. And Disney kept going. That’s when all the nostalgia-bait movies got churned out like no tomorrow.
    Disney has made absolutely fantastic movies since then; but you’ll notice one thing most of them have in common. They’re all original. Zootopia, Moana, Soul; all absolutely fantastic. Ralph breaks the internet, Toy story 4; all barely passable.
    Disney is torn between money and creators, and it’s strategies of appealing to both is not working. Main example: Lightyear and Owl House. They find it fine when they can simply remove the ‘controversial’ scene for China and Russia, but for owl house they cancel the entire thing.
    They need to get their priorities straight, or their own company is going to fall like Mufasa, and their own hands will be Scar.

      Owl house wasn’t cancelled. Shortened yes, but according to some, that just made Season 2 and 3 better than before. Yes Disney was stupid in that regard and they themselves have admitted it, but be accurate in the words you’re using, shortened (not cancelled).

    • @JChannel_
      @JChannel_ ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Lightyear wasn’t good because it was appeasing to the people who liked the “controversial” scene which shouldn’t be for kids because kids don’t need to think about that stuff and the theme of the movie of trying to save the planet is exactly what you guys want but is absolutely not Buzz Lightyear and is a terrible story. It’s Superman 2, Ferngully and so many other propaganda before it. It’s the same sh!t of history repeating itself you guys never learn because you guys obviously don’t care about or pay attention to movie history. I wonder why Snow White, Cinderella, Little Mermaid, The Lion King etc we’re super successful and still loved till this day. Hmmmm… because they’re just great films and stories NOT trying to push an agenda or be political etcetera, etcetera. Learn from history or get out of the way.

    Thank you, Brian. You gave me the words I wanted to say about the current Disney is going through.
    It hurts me lately of how they are lacking creativity they are dealing with.
    Especially from an early age, Disney has always been a safety net for me whenever I was going through the
    hardest & worse moments of my life.
    Sure, there were other Entertaiment's like Warner Brothers, Cartoon Network, Hanna Barbara, & Dreamworks.
    But they never made me feel secured the same way as Disney did.
    (Which by the way everyone, was the original intent that Walt had in mind when he started this whole
    thing! Making fun and enjoyable shows & movies to bring family & friends of all ages together through our hardest times)
    I'm still holding on to the hope that Disney will turn things around & bring back that same magic that they had before Walt died.
    But with how things still stand, if they don't change soon, they WILL bring down everything that Walt has made over the centuries.
    It may sound dramatic, but that is the reality we must face.

    I don't even know if Pixar & Disney need to change stories much. As long as they focus on family, friendships, and genuinely get us in the "feels." Like Encanto, and more so, Coco and Inside Out. This 60 year old grandma, can't get through those two without turning into a puddle of tears 😢. Also Moana is such a gem! But I agree with you Brian, most of the recent offerings have been at best, meh or so-so, and at their worst groan inducing and forgettable. I really loved Wandavision, Loki, and Moon Knight, but the rest of the Marvel series (though cute, and sometimes comical,) all could have been given the "Werewolf by Night," long-single episode-special treatment in my opinion.

    Here's my personal opinion on the action plan Disney needs to take to (hopefully) return to form:
    1. Stop making live action remakes. After the Pinocchio disaster, that should be obvious.
    2. Return to hand drawn. I know, computer animation is more manageable and less time consuming. But look at all the popular TH-camrs who hand draw animations. It's a popular art form because it's far more impressive.
    3. Return to the adaptation plan. True, original stories are nice but their greatest works were adaptations of classic stories like Snow White or Shakespeare. Maybe try a couple more Hans Christian Anderson stories or Phantom of the Opera.
    4. Show their other projects like marvel and star wars mote care rather than just trying to adapt them into what's popular.
    5. STOP ATTACKING FAN MADE PROJECTS. You don't build your brand by lashing out at your fans. As long as they're not outright stealing from you or affecting your profits, leave them alone.

      Either doing a mix of 2d and 3d movies (maybe the 3d more with pixar?) or even trying to blend the two styles together for a movie would be nice. Considering how 2d is rarely done now, they could probably make more money off it as its more 'unique', so its good for their greedy hands.

    I consider myself to be an extremely optimistic person when it comes to media. I'm always the person going "The movie isn't as bad as the internet/critics/reviewers say", but it's getting harder for me to keep saying that with the recent stuff Disney has put out. While I'm still probably more optimistic and generous than the internet ratings, the new stuff is far from my favorites in all studios. I think one big problem that needs to change is Disney's obsession with live action stuff. I feel like Disney is pushing live action so heavily because the kids who grew up with the Renaissance are now adults, and animation is "for kids". I love animation, and I really wish Disney spent more time marketing and advertising their animated features.
    I also feel like Disney doesn't really know how to "update" the classic Disney formula now that they've adapted pretty much every well known Western European fairytale, but like, there's tons of different cultural stories and mythologies that can serve as inspiration from the rest of the world. There's so much potential for storytelling, and it would be a good way to introduce the Western audience to the cultural richness of so many different countries. I personally, want to learn the mythologies of various African cultures, but I just don't have the time to dig through the internet for each country's stories. I think Disney has gotten so used to producing stuff familiar to the Wealthy, Western world, that they forget it's okay to make your main audience not the main culture of the film. Yes, some people will feel ostracized, but I think that's a huge part of getting introduced to a different culture.

    Personally, I think that most, if not all, of Disney’s current problems are related to how Bob Chapek is running the company. I remember reading an online article about how Bob Iger regrets putting Chapek in charge of the company, as well as the company’s late response to Florida’s controversial Don’t Say Gay bill, which also didn’t help matters. Possibly the biggest slap to the face was when I saw a Twitter video of Chapek claiming that animation was for kids. That got me so angry that I was like, “yeah, Disney needs new management. Animation is for everyone!” I seriously hope that Disney gets back on track with producing mind blowing content, just like they’ve done in the past. That’s something that got me into being a Disney fan in the first place. And, again, animation is for everyone, not just kids.

I see announcements of other theme parks giving their pass holders incredible discounts and perks while Disney is slowly taking them away. I grew up on Disney and visited the parks a bunch when I was in high school, but now I'm not excited about much that they're doing to the parks and I feel like these price increases and fastpass alterations are making parks less affordable and less accessible to families and it is all very disheartening and unfortunate. I too do not think the company is dying, however I think they need to stop what they're doing, rebuild from the ground up, and truly listen to the public.

Disney needs to know that the classic Disney will get attention, if they announced next week that they’ve been working on a new fully 2D animated film about whatever they come up with people will be interested, people will be excited and love the idea, they need to know that the woke modernized films aren’t getting as much attention as they hope because they aren’t addressing the problems, the old Disney was bold and not afraid to try something new

    I agree with ya Brain that the company isn't necessarily "dying" but more or less oversaturated the market at the moment. Like you said, this is thier "dip period" where they are not at thier top prime at the moment or if something happened that can affect the company and eventually thier product negatively like Walts death or the pandemic. I've always been a big fan of Disney, always watching behind the scenes content, getting inspired, loving what they put out and to one day work for them to create that same magic. But now, I'm not really excited anymore nor any drive to work for them (can't anyways cause of hiring freeze lol). They feel so all over the place like instead of me reaching out to them to buy products or go to the parks, they are branching to me so much as a consumer and I feel so exploited and overwhelmed. I do think as well they are really heavy handing thier overuse of successful IPs to keep the company "afloat". For example: "Hey since the Lion King was successful when it first came out, let's do it again but put half as much work in! It doesn't matter how bad we blunder it cause it will always be a tickted success!!" Then Bing bada boom, no surprise here, the LA version made a billion dollars in box office. All nostalgia bait.
    I do hopefully they grow out of this slump and let artistic people take charge! I want to be excited again Disney! Show me that same spirit, that drive of storytelling, to inspire people like me to make visual magic.

I think Disney is losing what Walt Disney has visioned . It's just too politically woke. If they want to separate LBGTQ on Disney plus that would probably help people choose what they want to watch. hi brian. i definitely agree that disney’s recent works have been underwhelming. i don’t wanna say that i haven’t enjoyed most of the new projects, but as you say, a lot of things are unfortunately quite forgettable. i absolutely adore Soul as a film as well as it’s meaning, and i also very much enjoyed Luca, but things like Raya and Turning Red are things i’ve only watched once since they’ve come out because although the animation was beautiful, i think myself and probably many other fans are craving this excitement you described. the feeling of joy from newness. however, there has not been any real change!! i think you are correct in saying “innovate”, because i think something revolutionary or something that we haven’t seen before is definitely needed on the feature film side of things. i can’t personally speak on the parks, as i live in the uk and haven’t ever been to any (though i’d love to!) , but what you described about paying for a pass and being blocked out must have been really frustrating for you and i don’t blame you for not renewing!! as far as disney+ goes, some of the content i have loved (such as Dug Days), and things like Baymax! and Zootropolis/topia+ have been okay, but most of the time i use the service to watch the classics, as well as some tv shows. i’m quite young, so i wasn’t around for the releases of most of my favourite disney movies, but i am really craving the excitement i felt when putting a disney movie on, or even like in the 2010s, when movies like Tangled or Wreck it Ralph came out! the live action movies recently have not been good, im not a huge fan of them anyway but as you said, Pinocchio was very difficult to sit through! this is a very long comment but what i’m trying to say is i agree with you, but at the same time i’m trying to be positive, the Elemental trailer has given me a hint of that joyful feeling so hopefully as we learn more about that project it will become very exciting. this video was great, thanks!

    Even though I enjoy some of the newer stuff like Andor, Mighty Ducks, Sulphur Springs and especially the TV Animation like Big City Greens and Molly McGee (even though I'm nearly 30 xD), I totally unterstand you regarding Raya, Soul, etc. They did not feel like Moana/Vaiana and Coco, they felt forgettable. As a German, I always felt that Disney has a weird relationship with Disneyland Paris. Every D23, we see how Orlando and Anaheim gets so much great NEW stuff and Paris gets a refurbishment for Hotel New York with over night prices now +50%, new parades and clothing for the 30th birthday and copies of Avengers Campus, Arendelle and MAYBE a Star Wars Land. The last new attraction was Ratatouille in 2014 (!) which now was copied to Orlando. I understand that Paris might be expensive because of working rights and unions here in Europe and much better rights and welware than in U.S.A, but come on, we are still birthplace of nearly every story a Disney Film was made off. My big wish was always to go to Orlando or Anaheim, but when I see the prices, it really feels that Disney is not for everyone any more (even though Universal is as expensive). I also don't understand why Disney had cancelled the McGuire reboot. Yes, it is a reboot, but Paramount with iCarly shows how good a reboot can be. Chapek makes Mickey more greedy at the moment. :(

    Disney's actions right now kind of reminds me of that Arthur said in Shrek 3. "If you want to do something better than this, than the only one standing in your way is yourself" and that's Disney, the poor unfortunate souls.
    They're too busy trying to stick to the status quo and what money by the pound by using every little piece of their old stuff, that they can't even step into the unknown and see how far they'll go with a project. "Why should I worry?" is something Chapek constantly says, he ends up counting his eggs before they hatch as he takes one jump ahead of his own company and things go down faster than a spoon full of sugar on medicine. Be prepared to see Disney shill out more of what they think is going to be making them big buck-buck-bucks only to realize too little too late that it's all burning down in Hellfire.
    As for the parks? They've overlooked the bare necessities of what makes a park supercalifragilisticexpialidocious enough to feel like you're riding on a Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride. As I'm typing this, I'm listening to Brian and realizing that he truly has done his homework. Singing a happy little working song as he makes his points clear and strong. But who knows, Disney might finally know the way, find the spirit again, and do the next right thing. If so, then we'll stop trashing the camp as Disney manages to go from zero to hero. They've only got one last hope and it's up to them to give a little whistle and find that magic that they once had.
    And if not, they'll be in our heart as the ones who brought us a dream, a wish that our hearts made, and we'll turn to them and say: "You're Welcome."

    WITH ME I THINK IT'S JUST RUDE THAT DISNEY STEALING OTHER COMPANIES AND NOT REALIZING DISNEY NEEDS TO BE THEIR OWN COMPANY AND NOT STEAL OTHER COMPANIES THAT'S HOW I FEEL AND THAT'S HOW I FEEL RIGHT NOW AND YOU ARE

    For me, 2022 has pretty much been the start of a whole new decline for Disney. The stuff that was released by them in 2021 was incredibly exciting, but afterwards…things seemed to be going pretty downhill with them.
    They’ve become too reliant on frequent LGBT incorporations that don’t even contribute to the overall stories, and something about their current atmosphere seems to be less than friendly for Christians like myself. Then again, that’s how I’ve been feeling with what every motion picture company in Hollywood has been doing nowadays.

    Brian, do you know about the Wing feather saga? I know it's not Disney but you should check this out! It's a true story and it's a book series too! 🥰 I think you would like it! It's on the Angel studio app and TH-cam also, they are saying.

    I'm sorry you feel this way, brian.😔
    I wouldn't say Disney is dying. In fact, they're far from dying.
    The reasons for why everyone hated the live-action Pinocchio remake was understandable. Most of the scenes were changed completely. But I still support it.
    Though I think what's making Disney great right now is Pixar. Pixar have released so many great movies (Luca and turning red). And we can't forget the new and beautifully animated film "Elemental". I'm really interested in seeing that when it comes out. I really don't see any reason to be disappointed in Disney.
    But it's totally fine if you see some flaws in the company.

    Disney won't be dying if they make a proper Zootopia sequel

    Thank you so much for sharing this, Brian! I'm studying media and production in university right now, and I feel the same way as you.
    That's why screenwriting class makes me so excited: I love learning and working with future storytellers who want to create films that are fresh and powerful and exciting.

    I used to be kind of excited about the remakes too, but after “Lion King” and “Pinocchio” sucked out absolutely everything that made the cartoons amazing, I cringe to think of future remakes being made. They’re also doing too much virtue-signaling, I think, and I would just rather be entertained by them, instead of them trying to play it safe and always try to be “with it” all the time.

    I miss when Disney was just Disney. Before they bought Marvel, Star Wars, and Fox. I miss the 90s-2000s Disney I grew up with.

    I think the last time I was interested in a Disney animation film was honestly Tangled. Big Hero 6, Monsters University and Ralph BTI were good/alright, but the other recent movies have been terribly marketed and really underwhelming. They're just running out of ideas and being way too pop trend heavy, like with Raya and the Last Dragon. I hope they do something to come back cause films like Treasure Planet and the Renaissance films are amazing, but nothing has really touched me since then. The Pinocchio movie really makes me think they are just parodying themselves and I don't care about them because of that. I know 2D animation is expensive, but the CGI movies to me ruin the emersion of being different from reality. I would rather have a 2D movie that hits hard than a 3D movie that hits alright.

    The problem this time though is its not war or competition thats putting disney into a slump but disney itself. Theres a major difference there, in the past, love for disney remained even during its lows. Now fans are turning on the company altogether and its solely because of the actions of disney itself. So yeah, back then, outside influences forced disney to be less successful whilst still retaining love from its audiences, now disney is purposefully ruining its products and its fans and even many of its own employees have turned from loving the company to resenting it. This is nothing like before.
