If that piano could speak, it would be saying "OMG! Who is this????" That piano didn't stand a chance. What a pianistic genius Horowitz was and this is one prime example of what he could do. Thank god for Scriabin and Horowitz and now youtube.
I wish to take this opportunity to thank Michael Brown for this 1968 phenomenal video of Horowitz playing Scriabin's magnificent Etude in d# minor, Op. 8 No. 12. It is breathtaking, beyond expression of words, it is fantastic in every musical aspect of this performance!
Mookie Spindlehurst „Satan“ was obviously used as a metaphor for his outstanding playing and did not refer to the „Satan“ you are talking about. Also, in my opinion it‘s kind of rude that you describe his playing as „god given“, - not trying to start a discussion about whether god is real or just fiction - however it‘s not okay to act as if his hard work and practice are not really relevant, since his talent is apparently god given.. It is quite clear that the reason was who he was is not because of god, but because of his own hard work and dedication to his instrument.
Kasyapa- and whoever worked to restore this gem; thank you; thank you; thank you. It is inspiring to know that there are still people working on improving our record of Horowitz and similar titans of the piano.
....the inimitable and genius ~nuanced VH touch....opens the door for us to experience his take on the Scriabin sound world....then, on Fire....ferocious Passion....all from his connection- Composer to Piano....I can’t view this too many times...a timeless Masterpiece.....his expression at the end...truly priceless....
You say that as if you think 65 is old. Listen to the Horowitz in Moscow recording of this which he did at age 82. By the way, if you do a search on TH-cam, you can find him doing this piece in 1962 (studio), 1968 (here), 1974 (at the Met), 1982 (London), 1986 (Moscow), and 1986 (Berlin). All are different in some way, but the one represented here is my favorite. One of the most difficult pieces in the repertoire played with absolute authority. This video documents the pinnacle of his career.
Hey even leaves out sections of chords in the left hand - like during the end of the primary phrase (at the end of the piece) - right before the choatic build. He just neglects to play a few of the left hand chords, but it opens up a totally different and fitting sonority
He knew Scriabin. In a discussion about a certain passage with another pianist,, he said that Scriabin confimed his, Horowitz's, interpretation as correct. From the Composer. Horowitz may in fact have had a certain talent and intensity that might have surpassed Scriabin's talent....Sure...it happens.
Incredible performance! Some interesting observations (not at all criticisms) are that his posture looks very uncomfortable and his elbows are a good 8" below the keyboard. This goes against everything we have been taught, certainly in the UK. It obviously works well for him. Have we all been doing it wrongly all these years?
Yup. The way we are "taught"..... isn't actually "THE WAY", as they have us believe. You should relax, adapt conform to way it works out best for you. Bearing mass and exerting joints from above, direct more kinetics (downward force)....... but in consequence bears greater inertia from Rebound. Hence suffering/diminishing control and finesse.... You could even play with wrist below keys, with fingers sufficiently long, which confers better possibility of finesse/control.
Shoulder posture of Horowitz is done with the utmost ease and relaxation in order to attack with precision the various chords, and to produce this monumental sound effect, and it comes from no other than Franz Listz … if you observe with attention, he does not raise his shoulders but moves them in a back and forward motion, free of any constraints… and his back moves freely as well, sometimes the entire upper body…
Like Carly Simon says ...nobody does it better...I'm beginning to see a lot of Horowitz electricity is generated from that powerful and very accurate left hand...I'm not a hater, but considering Vladimir Horowitz's longevity and body of work, and his electrifying performances especially in the 30's and 40's not to mention his comebacks, no other performer moves me the way he does..so I really believe he is the best...I just recently watched that 1958 Van Cliburn Moscow video where he also played the same piece ...but it wasn't the same as Horowitz, however Van Cliburn s, Tchaikovsky was very moving.
Correct. Many greats of the 20th century were middle-aged or older when stereo came in, so most people know them only as plus-50 or plus-60. I always find recordings from their 30s or 40s regardless of the sound quality. You hear amazing things. True of Arrau, Horowitz, Callas et al.
@@nimrodshefer3649 Yes. He was extraordinary. But that was only my choice. If I had to choose three pianistists (not composers) I would chose Gilels, Horowitz and Richter. I also like Cziffra, Cliburn, Argerich, Rubinstein, Ashkenazy, Arau, Michelangeli, ...
HOROWITZ is in a class by himself. AT times it sounds like there is more than one pianist playing so great is his virtuosity and independence between both hands. The combination of his power, his stamina, his interpretation and his musicality make him the total package and the greatest of all time...and yet such a thin, frail looking man....HARD TO UNDERSTAND HOW THIS IS POSSIBLE My theory is that he had to have an extra-terrestrial because no mere human, no mere mortal could have consolidated and encompassed so many musical aptitudes and abilities in one mere mortal body,, I am only half joking of course but I believe I have some concrete evidence for this claim because when you watch him in the later parts of this video in the more " percussive " parts of the composition ( as if the whole thing is not UBER percussive )...he seems to look like a REPTILIAN and seems to be shape shifting !!! TOO GREAT for mere comparison to other humans...CASE CLOSED
This piece is a tribute for the mentally ill out there. At 50 sec, you start a little balade in the realm of angels until approximately 1.17, where the harsh reality of your condition takes you back in misery. Glorious piece, grande Scriabin and Horowitz
Jesus loves you! Accept God’s gift of salvation and freedom from the eternal consequences of sin and death! Repent and be saved. Because everyone is a sinner fallen short of God’s glory, we all deserve just punishment for our sins. But God so loved the world, that He gave His one and only Son, so that whoever believes in Him may have eternal life! Instead of us having to suffer our own just consequence for our sins, God loved us so much to send Jesus (the Word of God become human) to take ALL of our sin and punishment into Himself, forever defeating sin and death for US! He paid our price once and for all. By living in Christ, we are forgiven, redeemed, have the gift of the Holy Spirit who comforts and helps us live holy lives, and have eternal life in heaven being reconciled with God our Father! God’s love for us is more high and long and wide and deep than we can comprehend, but I pray that you will understand and rest in the love of God and the riches of His grace in Christ Jesus. The right of being adopted by Him as an heir of the Kingdom of Heaven is a beautiful gift and I plead that you accept it. Give up your life, take up your cross and follow Jesus! I love you, Jesus loves you!
No one can play this piece like Horowitz, he was the best
His dynamics were out of this world.
No facial expressions or show, just amazing by it's own
He still reigns supreme as a pianist, and what a thrill to replay this over and over again. He is a phenomenal inspiration.
I only play once in a while so the feeling is always new
Это шедевр! Не слышал такого виртуозного исполнения этого произведения как Горовиц
Fabulous playing. Horowitz was unbelievably great.
Incredibly great playing.
Шквал эмоций’ Невероятно мощно! Один гений понял. и раскрыл замысел другого Гения!! Браво!
With a very justified proud smile at the end.

Mookie Spindlehurst why criticize?
The best performance of this wonderful Etude.

"Breathing hands", I am amazed at his nuances and a sudden change f the character
The restoration is perfect. The other version had audio/video terribly out of sync.
Phenomenal!
Потрясающе ❤
That was his piece.
You're right about that Gerard.he plays this so brilliantly.

Bravo maestro horowitz play magnificent scriabin 👏👏👏👏👏👍
1968?? He was 65 year old!!! My GOD..........
He plays everything in the most unconventional way possible; but for him, it works.

OMG!
I wonder what was taken from his life to have devoted it to his music.
Nothing. The piano wasn't a replacement for anything... it WAS everything. He expressed all of his love of life through it.

Is Horowitz the best one?May be, but it is not a competittion...
Was he happy with this performance? He looks a bit irritated after striking the last chord!

Poor piano.
Restoration??? Suono rovinato, appiattito, pessimo lavoro sul suono, tolta tutta la magia del tocco di Horowitz!!!
