The First InterSpecies-Internet Conversation

- Kanzi and Panbanisha respond to children in Japan over video via satellite. This is the first time an InterNet Connection was made between a human and a nonhuman species. It was filmed by NHK of Japan who arranged for the connection. The topic of conversation was about the foods that the bonobos would like the children to place in a box that would then be "flown" to Georgia, and a mythical figure would bring this box to the bonobos. This video does no illustrate their daily life and was no so intended. Where requests seem repetitive, it is for purposes of filming and allow different children to participate on their end. The bonobos could hear that someone was actually preparing the box in the lab and wanted them bring it as soon as they heard this. The bonobos did understand that this was a live interactive connection on this first attempt. Kanzi always like to lead - as can be seen here. In the video are Panbanisha with her two sons Nyota and Nathan. The footage also illustrates the communications occurring between and within species, in a group of 4 bonobos that comprehend human speech and lexigrams. Two of the bonobos are adults and two are children. All are related to the matriarch Matata, who was wild-reared as raised the bonobos with Dr's Sue and Duane Rumbaugh, Sue's sister Liz Pugh, and others.
Kanji gets angry at anything he believes is unjust or willful deceit. Otherwise he is very patient and friendly as long as one understands and shows respect for his strength. If he is angry and you explain that you intended no wrong - he is very forgiving. One time - when I did not realize how good his memory was- I promised to bring him a birthday present when I returned in a few weeks from being out of town. And I forgot my promise. When I walked in he was immediately very angry and NOTHING would calm him down and I could not figure what was wrong with so I did not go in with him. I left and thought and thought till I realized what I had done. I walked back in and immediately he was angry again- then I said - are you made because I forgot your Birthday Present ?And screamed Yereeeeeees!!!!!! So I apologized profusely and said I would run get it. I got some small thing and went back and all was forgiven and he was happy 😃. It was not what I brought that mattered to Kanzi - it was that I had forgotten and had not understood that he was waiting and cared about what I had said. He was making a point.

@@kanziwamba9293 th-cam.com/video/dBUHWoFnuB4/w-d-xo.html I believe it's you ha. It's like a 5 or 6 part documentary.
Alisha D Yes the real Kanzi is very different from the documentaries - as are the others - that is why I posted this unclip video - which in many ways is more difficult to watch because there is so much going in.
Yes - he is very different than the documentaries allow you to see. The documentaries cut out the words he is always using in a conversational manner. They want to make their own points. I have been attempting to publish about this for many years but primatologists believe Ape sounds cannot possibly be a true language. So the understanding of what Kanzi can really do has lagged behind where it should be. This is one reason I have begun to publish completely unedited material - such as this video - and will put up a website that explains much more in the not too distant future. The helpful comments I am receiving from persons such as you will begin to make possible an awakening in the minds of others. As a few more people begin to see what is taking place with Kanzi - and what can take place with other bonobos - human/ape linguistic vocal communication will slowly begin to flower 🌸.
@@kanziwamba9293 Fascinating work, I just might want to continue it someday myself, considering I might do primatology in grad school. It's astounding how much there is still yet to learn and discover in this field.

@@ZachSquatch7" This past September, the Iowa Primate Learning Sanctuary (IPLS) placed then executive director and senior scientist Sue Savage-Rumbaugh-a pioneer in ape communication studies-on administrative leave following allegations by a group of 12 former center employees that Savage-Rumbaugh put the apes at risk for disease and injury and is mentally unfit to run the facility and care for them. The whistleblowers, known as the “Bonobo 12” allege that Savage-Rumbaugh allowed incestuous copulations between apes that had led to an unauthorized pregnancy (and subsequent miscarriage), forgot where she left the apes, locked the apes outside without access to water for hours at a time, and exposed the animals-including the infant bonobo Teco--to people who did not have proper vaccinations, among other instances of dangerous behavior."

I loved seeing the buildup and the reaction to pink bunny magic delivery from Japan
I am so glad you are sharing ,Your job is outstanding !!!!
Nyota is the son of Panbanisha and a male who came to us from Japan
I am happy 😃 you appreciate my sharing this footage. It has been difficult to do because my relationship with the bonobos who loved me and to whom I dedicated my life was successful - but so successful that others wanted them for their own and they wanted this kind of research to end. They wanted to maintain the myth that love is insufficient to overcome the strength, danger and aggressiveness of apes. Love 💕 is quite sufficient to overcome any danger they pose -if you simply allow them to love you back and treat them fairly in all you say and do. But to accomplish that you must first learn to understand their expressions and you must learn how to signal your good intentions. And you must do this over and over and over until they trust that you mean what you say - because they quickly learned that many people say one thing and do another. We all learn this at a rather young age and it hurts us all.
Apes do not wish to harm people but if people say one thing and do another - once they come to understand language- they resent such behavior.
Like children - they must be taught that having their own way is not the most important thing in life - it is much better to help others. Punishment not only never ever works with an ape - it results in resentment that will manifest in some negative way in the future. I don’t believe that it ever works with human beings either - but teaching and love do - as the need to love and to learn are basic needs within each of us.
Amazing journey of Love ,time, dedication that you gave them Sue , that matters as we can love our parents or family members and not spending time with them means nothing . Glad you are not giving up on them
When Kanzi was young he grew up in a 50 acre Georgia forest. He could roam without a lead and go wherever he wanted. The other bonobos could do the same and when this video was made the younger bonobos still could. Because Kanzi is an adult - people would fear him if they came into the forest or if he went beyond the forest. They would shoot him. Kanzi has never run away or left the forest as I have explained to him the problem. However he does go out of my sight in the forest and so I ask him to wear a lead - which he is willing to do. He does not believe that is a problem because he always knows where I am even if I can’t see him. But it frightens people too much these days if Kanzi is in the forest and he can’t be seen. Kanzi and the other bonobos moved to Iowa in 2004 - where they became famous and then the administration wanted to take them away from the people they knew and loved and put them in a zoo or take their new home away and turn it into a zoo. So they made up lots of wrong stories to justify treating them as zoo animals. They now live in a zoo situation. Kanzi and the other bonobos and all captive apes should be free or at least taught how to live how to live freely., When this video was made - if I stopped the filming session - I could take Kanzi outdoors or he could go at anytime to a fenced in yard of about 1/2 acre. In this video he wants me to go in the forest with him and so do the others. We often spent all day in the forest and there is film of that at “Bonobo People” on utube. Where he is today - he has a one acre outdoor yard that is fenced that he can go to in the summer. He should have at least 5 square miles in which to move with his family. He and they could understand the need to not go beyond that area if it were explained to them and if they were shown the dangers beyond the boundaries.
Have been reading the first part of 'Apes, Language and the Human Mind' from 1998 this evening, and found it very moving. Is there any literature you could recommend that would bring me up to speed with the situation today regarding the scientific response to this unequivocal demonstration of a continuum of syntactic capabilities incorporating (at least) other nonhuman primates?

This is being filmed with a group of children in Japan. It is to see if they can understand children they do not know who are in another country over the Internet. Because it is being filmed I am trying to enable the camera person to get footage. The kids in Japan have a box and the bonobos are communicating what food they would like to have in the box. The box will then be “delivered” to them. (A similar box is being prepared in our building for them out of their sight.) This why the communications are repeated - to the Japanese children on the Internet. They and the bonobos are figuring out how to communicate and being filmed at the same time.
Ideally the bonobos will be able to live in a forest where the food grows naturally. They have spent their lives growing up in a forest in Georgia. But as adults they need far more than 50 acres.
Looks to me as if Kanzi is doing a better job of communicating than the children, lol.
I might have watched this at least a thousand times, and each time I did, I can't help but appreciate everyone in this video; Dr. Sue Savage-Rumbaugh, Kanzi, Panbanisha, Nyota, and Nathan. I adore them all so much!

Has he ever asked you something that has been a total surprise and has blown you away?

I am incredibly grateful to you for sharing the videos.
Thank you 🙏🏻 4 your comments. I will be posting an explication of this video and a Bonobo Hope Website in the not too distant future. Am working at this time to help establish an InterSpecies Internet so many more people can talk to many more apes and begin to understand what language and culture actually are from an embodied emic perspective. This video illustrates an ability to use the Internet (this was their first exposure) and an ability to engage in dyadic and triadic reference, as well as the capacity to point; all things denied to apes by other researchers who are fearful 😧 of getting to know them well enough to interact with them. Fear is not a good teacher - Love is - and it is love and family that enables them to do what they do here.

TAUGHT THEM A WASTE OF TIME, THE ANIMAL HEARS A SOUND THEN PUSHES A BUTTON TIL IT HEARS A SIMILAR SOUND, THESE SOUNDS WE CALL WORDS, BUT TO THE ANIMAL IT MAY AS WELL BE ANY SOUND, CAR CRASHING, BEEPING, ETC. AS THEY HAVE ZERO MEANING TO THE WILD ANIMAL.
Not sure how you arrive at your conclusion??Do you wish to explain?
Kanzi makes thousands of sounds with his vocal tract - many more than by touching a lexigram. He uses the lexigrams only because humans cannot understand his vocal words. But he and the other bonobos in his family can. They know what their own words mean - plus they know what our words mean. This is remarkable and it has been demonstrated with controlled experiments.
It seems to make you angry that they have this ability, but there is no need for anger. It is perfectly normal and natural that closely related species should have such capacities.

Given these points about their kindness of character, and having watched a good amount of the videos that are available to us, it is frustrating for me to have to endure the mundane repetitiveness of this Japanese video link.
I'm assuming the reason for doing a link is part of a breeding agreement/business relationship, and therefore assuming that it's supposed to be good for both projects (US & Japan) as it's raising/reinforcing awareness for it all.
Like any big corporate seminar though, most of the content from the link-up is painfully dull, poorly delivered and full of shallow gimmicks intended to connect with the audience, but has the opposite affect in reality (though that _is_ me generalising in order to make a wider point here).
It seems obvious to me that the Bonobos struggle with the repetitiveness and consequent irrelevance of the whole charade. They seem a lot more intuitive when they're involved in the midst of real activities, such as being only in the company of people they are comfortable with, or when they're in the woods for example.
While actually _doing_ real activities, the use or apparent understanding of more complex language doesn't appear to be the main focus then, and so it is evident by how intuitive and well integrated it is when language use is then carried out...
When put in front of a screen with non-familiar people, and then asked to repeat mundane communications, in exchange for a food reward, and then not have that reward given until they repeat the same very basic communication again and again, and still not get the reward; they appear to disengage. It's as if they get confused by the process, as if they are reduced to cynicism (!) like - oh you want me to press the banana button _again_ huh... Are you actually paying attention when I press these buttons for you, because I am pressing the obviously correct button...
In Sue saying how kind Bonobos are, it does seem like an absurd human quirk to inflict this obviously basic, overly repetitive request on them and take so long to give the damn box!
I do believe Sue, that the Bonobos do have their own vocalisations, forming a very basic set of their own communications, and at times are participating to the video link using their mouths rather than constantly repeating the same fruitless task of button pressing, with little sign of the expected reward then arriving.
The kind of intimate, subtle understanding that is required to make the most of understanding them as best as we can, in all of their expressions; will surely come from a passionate, perceptive, dedicated, intelligent yet natural approach like Sue's, rather than playing the "can you press the banana button" game for 20 years. Though like I said, it is probably intended to raise awareness for funding them?
Corporations eliminate souls. People and animals deserve a better existance than one espoused by any corporation!! :)
Latest issue of the Smithsonian brought me here. Amazing work, Dr. Sue!!!! 🥰 I believe all creatures have the capacity to understand us and communicate with us. You just have to know how to listen.

Yes he should be able to do those things. He and all other adult bonobos require very large forests in which they can travel at will. We should construct both Enlightened Sanctuaries in this country and Gateway Sanctuaries in their countries of origin. A few acres is not sufficient. Bonobos are incredible! It's so sad how close to extinction they are.
Because they are so peaceful :(
He keeps asking but nobody is listening! Can somebody give this poor Ape what he wants.
Ruth R. Yes someone is listening 👂- the bonobos are talking by live video to a group of kids in Japan. The kids are preparing a box 📦 to be delivered to the Bonobos by “bunny” (who is able to travel even faster than Amazon) and who will bring these things to them. Kanzi is telling him what they should put in the box 📦 and they doing so, unless it is something they don’t have. But not to worry - Kanzi has enough to eat - he does not have to work for food.
@@kanziwamba9293 Yes, we can see. He's the fattest Bonobo I saw on the web 😊 (M&M's?)
He also looks very healthy, the fat suits him well. It is clear he is taken care off very well 👍
Yes - the M&Ms are being put in a box for him by the kids on live connect in Japan - M&Ms are a real treat for him - so he wants more in the box
Kanzi likes bring big - just as do Sumo wrestlers, he has been place on a diet and is now skinny.
He likes being called the KANZ and being the biggest Bonobo.
@@kanziwamba9293 The Kanz. That indeed sounds very good. Greetings to the Kanz, and please don't make him to skinny. Gorilla's are always fat, and they are very strong. It looks good on him.
I love the look in his eyes, so curious.
i cant take you seriously with that profile picture lol
@@arda5388 it's apart of the joke lol
We do need the singularity of the InterSpecies Internet. New studies of two human brains in interaction show dynamic rapidly changing patterned networks interacting and coordinating constructive behavior. Certainly it was my impression in being with the bonobos that it was possible for my brain to coordinate with theirs in a very positive way that was beneficial to both in that we gained capacities and information from each other. The ability of Peter Gabriel to do this kind of thing with the bonobos at the musical level was equally striking. Some of the highest levels of brain co-ordination and interaction are achieved through musical co-construction of new melodies and rhythms.
The InterSpecies InterNet will enable all different kinds of InterSpecies interaction to flourish as a legitimate kind of behavior and allow people to understand the great flexibility of behavior - especially between species. To support it by allowing Kanzi and Ndume to talk over the Internet - send contributions to the “Indian plan.
They do not post any information about their board members or their IACUC members or their USDA reviews. Bonobo Hope has invited them to a constructive dialogue and is waiting for a response. Bonobo Hope supports freedom for all bonobos and the opportunity for all nonhuman apes to acquire and use a human language as long as they must be captive and interact with strangers and caretakers. They should be given the opportunity to express their thoughts. And the opportunity to learn how to live in freedom. They are too closely related to us to do otherwise. Like Koko they understand the narrative and plot of most movies - certainly the Planet of the Apes. One of their most favorite movies of all is Babe, which illustrates their deep sensitivity to the plight captive nonhumans face. They are able to answers questions about the movies they watch, recall them for decades and to answer questions about their wish to go to Africa.

This is amazing. Thank you for educating us...❤
Kanzi wouldn't like living without humans
Yoda is a trip lol It's sweet the way Kanzi shows affection by patting him on the head.
Just recently found out about you. Thank you for what you are doing, i believe you’re paving the way for future generations between the relationships between human, apes and all other animals
It's cool to see him with a young buddy, so he's not as lonely. He's a genius, legend Kanzi.
im amazed by the connection you guys have. I have ben watching lots of video's with kanzi. and I don't see how anyone could think he isn't self aware or conscious its clear as day. I wish I could have a friendship with kanzi the way you do. they are truly amazing.. are they not allowed to go outside anymore? to me that's very cruel to deprive him of his natural urge to be outside like any living thing.. :( its so wrong.. I hate that it that way.. if I were rich I myself as God is my witness would have a 1000 acre area just for him and his family to go whenever he wants .
Kanzi is the smartest primate other than humans has ever existed I'f I'm not mistaken.
The sad thing is, us humans had many relatives who were very smart or even smarter than us. Neanthertals are speculated to be smarter than us. Their brains were bigger.
Homo erectus was pretty smart too .
And many other homo species.
Sadly they all died out
You keep the bananas, he wants the m&ms 😄
This man just casually excused himself and used the toilet - that's pretty incredible. Makes you wonder about the stories in old tales like mahabharata where apes were used as warriors on the battlefield.
Thank you for posting this unedited footage! It offers some revealing insights into their thought processes, which the concisely-edited documentaries fail to convey.
I'm curious: I noticed that the bonobos already knew the term "bunny." Is the bunny a character you developed specifically to allow immediate follow-up on remote interactions (i.e. having a "bunny" on-site as well as in Japan); or is it a recurring character that you use for their interactions; and, if the latter, what are its other uses?
If it's a recurring character, is the same person always dressed up as the bunny; and, if not, do the apes note the difference in gait, posture, scent, etc?
The concept brings up some very interesting questions that I never considered, about how apes identify individuals. It makes me think of parallels, such as how children never seem to question Santa Klaus. In a parade, at the mall or on the television - they're all the same person to a five-year old. It makes me wonder what a middle-aged ape thinks of the subject.
This is amazing!
And you have one more subscriber.
I want to meet and spend time with an ape one on one so bad, you are incredibly lucky to be able to do what you do, and you do it so well
Pls consider renaming better the videos next time, this deserves way more view/exposure but the title is very anti-clickbaity.
Love your work and I have nothing but respect and appreciation for you and Kanzi.
This title grabbed *my* attention! What title would you suggest?
This and others like it are probably the most important videos ever made from the standpoint of anthropology, the nature of intelligence and consciousness.
You can tell these animals are extremely intelligent, all apes are too intelligent to be locked into a zoo, instead we should be helping them with learning and helping their environment, koko and kanzi are perfect examples of this
Dude shut up, people like you don't realize zoos are the main reason a lot of animals are still here and not extinct, cry me a river.
This is so freaking cool!
1:50 I could see him mouthing 'grape', I knew that's what he was trying to say even before he pressed the button, that's wild!
This is a good question. The simple answer is “I don’t know.” And I would like to know. Longer explanation will follow.
I dont know why but Kanzi's smile made me smile automatically in the other documentary when kanzi was younger.
Kanzi is so sweet & beautiful. This is excellent!!!
Bonobos are so precious, i love them😭
11:28 somebody just give this guy some candy already please!
Канзи такой разговорчивый, что-то говорит на своём бонобьем языке. И на унитаз ходит самостоятельно, умничка🤗
What's in the box?
Peanut.
Yes, so what's in the box?
... Are you serious?!
Giving so many orders and commands and yet no rewards... I'd be pissed too.
Thank you....she crippled and crushed his autonomy
_Gets an encouraging human response_
Kanzi: *WHAT A WONDERFUL DAY !!!!*
Human researchers in the same room: _speechless_
Can you tell Kanzi that all headphone users are now deaf. 😅
Yeah he's extremely loud even by chimpanzee comparisons.
I wish they could have a caged in out door area he could go in. It's sad Kanzi can't go outside anymore because he's big now. He seems to miss it.
The sanctuary came under new managemenr years ago, and now they have a lovely outdoors area with trees! Kanzi is now a healthy weight and very happy.
He can leave anytime he wants.
How did I know that the baby was going to use the shirt to talk? So much like a child. Oh my gosh! How cute.
I can’t stop watching this
It felt like they made them wait a very long time for the box
Aliens teaching humans how to communicate using a sign board.
I watch this every week
His intelligence and dexterity are astounding! So is his patience and Dr Rumbaugh's!
Kanzi is so smart. Great guy, God bless him
Sue I just went through all your interviews on Prem Proph channel sooo interesting. Have been a big fan of yours for a long time, my girlfriend and I love watching videos of all your apes, we mimic your voice and mannerisms you use with them to ask each other to do things as a joke, complete with your trademark “thaaank you”. I wish more people knew about you and your stories. You would be great on the joe rogan podcasts he is obsessed with apes and loves interesting people.
Love what your doing with these species.
Imagine somewhere in this galaxy or alternate universe, someone is doing that to a human.
It's amazing how he is trying to vocalize words before pressing the button
I have to give Kanzi a ton of credit. Because if we’re in that room, forced to go through those activities everyday, I’d be yelling also.
We think intelligence is a purely human thing, that we’re special, but I have personally observed intelligence from many different species in our world.
It’s a crazy place we live in.
Man shut up 😂 he has the will to leave when he wants
He washed his car right before
