    I used to use Windex a lot on the house and the car, until I found the windows always had streaks after a couple of days. (Annoys the hell out of me when the car windows are streaky.)
    Then I discovered Maguires window cleaner, from watching car detailers on TH-cam, so got some from the local supplier and BINGO, no more streaky windows. I'm in Australia and it's about $20 a bottle here, probably a lot cheaper in the 'States as that's where it comes from, but well worth the cost whatever!
    I love watching you guys, especially watching the interactions with Parker. She has to be part poodle, as I have a white miniature poodle and he also has to be the centre of attention and "in the frame" so to speak.
    Take care guys and Stay Safe!

    Taylor to answer your window question: use distilled white vinegar. It will get all the water spots and dirt residue off of the window. But make sure to rinse the window afterward with regular water so the vinegar doesn’t mess up the glass

    I think the crack was a blessing in disguise bringing something else more important to your attention. If it's not the right type of chimney for wood burning and having that insulation inside it could have caused a fire. You might want to make sure the chimney liner is correct for wood burning. My house was built in 1880, and had just a basic brick chimney that was fine for the old furnace, and was ok for a while with the new high efficiency furnace until I put a new ridge vent roof on that made the attic colder. The higher efficient furnace put warm humid air through the chimney instead of the old furnace's dry hot air, plus the ridge vented roof system caused the attic and the chimney to be very cold that created condensation inside the chimney. The condensation started bleeding through the wall, and I had to have a new chimney liner installed to solve the problem, .

    • @randallstewart175
      @randallstewart175 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow! I'd have thought that a pre-purchase survey of the house would have caught that problematic gas/wood (?) fireplace insert issue. They need to get a heating contractor in there before the stone guys start rebuilding the mantle, because odds are that, if it is a gas insert, it is ruined, dangerous, and must be replaced, plus the gas chimney would have to be relined or replaced, meaning that the wall may have to come out. Building code requirements for a real wood fireplace and chimney are much different and more costly than for a gas fake. That could cost them quite few of espresso machine equivalents before it's done. Wood seems aesthetically charming, but it brings up front expense, long term maintenance costs, and what becomes a hassle schlepping wood around. The charm erodes fast, especially after your first creosote chimney fire. In the mean time, mis-adjust that flue damper and get smoked out of the house. (Right, what's a flue damper?) Perhaps reconsider doing a proper gas insert repair, fix the mantle, and move on? Good luck guys.

    You might check: if the house was sold as having a word burning fireplace and it is in fact not--the home inspector's company is probably liable for that and has insurance for things like this. They'd rather repair something than go to court.

    Try a power rinse with the nozzle, then cleaning vinegar/water with a good spike of alcohol (ethanol best, or isopropyl). (Acidified ethanol is the main ingredient in Rain-X.) Or, just buy w/w fluid.
    So sorry for your chimney/fireplace issues. Def check documents (listing, purchase contract, and home inspection report) to see if the house was listed as having a wood-burning fireplace! If so, and it was for gas only, you can claim the whole thing on home guarantee and even small claims suit for fraud.
    At least you don't have earthquakes shifting/shaking your chimney loose from the house-- talk about inevitable cracks! Keep your flexible filler and spare touch-up paint handy!

    Attic access. You may want to replace the rope with a small metal handle/ring you pull down with a hook. Your rope looks odd in such an open space. Just a thought. Hope the fireplace is salvageable, the burning of wood in a gas fireplace may have damaged the integrity of the unit. After you sort out the issue check with your fire insurance, wood burning is sometimes more expensive.

    Wash windows with white vinegar and water (or whatever, but vinegar and water is fine and cheap) and then dry with newspaper scrunched up. If need be polish with a tea towel or something decent in the way of material (but obvs not expensive!) works a dream. After all you’ve spent on your house, I’m surprised you’re renting it - unless you know the tenants. But hey! You could spend all you earn in rent restoring your stuff. Especially given that you appear to be pretty particular. Even a comparative slob like me would have to think hard before renting my dream home. (I’ve had a lot of experience with renting property out.) Query: does it really take three burly guys to remove a fire surround? Blimey.

    My partner and I owned a 1927 California Spanish house. We had a fireplace issue while it was raining, water was running down the wall in the living room. We discovered that the fireplace was pulling away from the house and leaning towards our neighbors house. We eventually sold the house and the new owners were willing to put money into the excavation etc. We bought a new home and traveled more without the expenses of an old home.😎

    Sorry you are dealing with this problem. I guess that's one of the pitfalls of home ownership. It is discouraging when you spend so much money to fix your house up and are really particular and then something like this happens. Please be careful if you rent out your house even for a short time because so many people are not careful and won't respect your house the way you do. You guys have a beautiful home and great taste. I hope you can get your fireplace fixed without too much hassle. I'm really anxious to get a tour of your whole house.

    Give this some thought: Knowing that renters never take care of a house as well as you, I am surprised that you would rent your newly renovated house since you guys are very particular people. It might cost you more in the long run to take on renters. How do you plan to do background checks on potential renters? How do you plan to protect your expensive appliances, or keep people from stealing items? What if they bring a pet and the pet pees in your house or outside plants? So much to think about...

    • @ThatWeirdoRightThere
      @ThatWeirdoRightThere 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was thinking about all of this stuff too. I think if they want to go the rental route the best thing for them to do would be airBnB because there is at least some type of insurance or repayment if anything were to happen to the house. And it’s a way to keep track of who exactly is staying there should anything happen

    6:33 Pro tip for cleaning windows: Use some old newspapers and some white vinegar to get your windows to SPARKLE! If you've never used newspapers to clean windows please believe me when I tell you, there is NO streaking nor is there any bleed from the ink in the newspapers. Using newspapers is an old trick that hopefully can still be utilized and it saves on paper towel usage.

    When I was a child many, many years ago my mom had us wipe old newspapers on the windows after they were cleaned to help them sparkle and shine and it did work. That said I do not know if the ink is the same ink that is used today. That was almost 50 years ago. As far as your fireplace, the insulation should have kept the metal brackets that your fireplace people used from getting too hot and causing the granite to crack. It could have been just a poor piece of granite. If the brackets did cause it, they should have noticed that when it was installed and taken care of that then. I would talk to another fireplace company and get a second opinion if they say you need to pay for it.

    • @BurjDubailover123
      @BurjDubailover123 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's actually limestone, a much weaker stone than granite of course. But it wasn't hung on brackets, it was adhered to the firebox and drywall with construction adhesive, the piece isn't necessarily deep enough to warrant a hanging bracket as its not cantilevering. The limestone is believed to have been too thin to have supported itself atop the other two side pieces and thus cracked under it's own weight. . Limestone is known to develop fractures when parts of it are singled out to extreme heat sources but whether the actual fire had anything to do with the center crack is inconclusive.

    I couldnt live like these guys. its too mind numbingly boring. walks, gardening, pasta, work and repeat, i dont know how people do it. what about partying? the partying lifestyle? its way more exciting. im not being mean though. i actually wish i was like these guys, if anything im envious that i had their dispositions to put up with the mundane, monotonous repetition of their lifestyle. good luck to them though
