It was astonishing the first time I carried my Cold Steel shovel on a backpacking trip, I found a million and one uses! But yeah it's heavy. What it WON'T do is replace any kind of axe. Very light chopping or splitting but nothing you can't do by making some wedges and a baton. I have a titanium shovel head that I carve a handle for on-site, much better.
