This film brought my favorite designed king ghidorah and made him a good guy which was interesting. though I am not gonna lie I would have preferred to have Varan and Anguirus in the film I mean look at the heisei gamera films for how well the guy making gmk can do amazing films
Ghidorah's design in this movie was a bit of a compromise. They were originally going to use Varan, but Toho wanted a more marketable monster. The suit designer put Varan's facial features on Ghidorah so he would still sort of be in the movie. As for not fitting a dragon deity, the point of having the original choice of monsters (Baragon, Anguiras, and Varan) was so that Godzilla would be the strongest monster in the film. Mothra and Ghidorah had to be downsized so they'd still fit that goal.
Also, the reason Baragon, Varan, and Anguirus were originally chosen is all three of those monsters are representative of creatures in Japanese folklore, which further solidifies that the only reason Mothra and Ghidorah made it in the film instead was because Toho wanted more recognizable Godzilla foes. In a way the decision works for the better, too, since Mothra and Ghidorah are both seen as very powerful. Because of that, it made Godzilla feel all the scarier when he thrashed them.
There's four key problems with that idea: 1) Like Godzilla, Anguirus is partially aquatic, that aspect is established in Godzilla Raids Again and other Showa films. 2) Baragon is already established as a burrowing creature, making him perfect for God of Earth. 3) Gamera being in this film simply couldn't happen. Daiei wouldn't budge on Gamera winning in a fight, which is why Godzilla v. Gamera never happened. 4) Varan can already fly, so why replace him apart from issues of recognizability?
I see what you're saying here and to a point I can agree, but I personally like that they were able to leave the movie open ended with that final scene. Seeing Godzilla's heart start to beat again drove the point home that the spirits of the Pacific Conflict were still very angry with Japan, and it makes me wonder if that might have been the catalyst for his return in the Godzilla vs Gamera movie that never ended up happening (this version of Godzilla was the one they planned to use).
In GMK, Godzilla is straight up evil, and Mothra and Ghidorah are guardian spirits of the Earth. The whole thing is a reinterpretation of what Godzilla and the other monsters are.
GMK Godzilla is a the original one brought back to life by Japanese soldiers forgotten during world war 2 to seek revenge on Japan Baragon Mothra and King Ghidora are 3 ancient guardians of Japan
I would've preferred the original choices of Varan, Anguirus, and Baragon. I get that Mothra and Ghidorah were more marketable but the original choices would've given this film a more grounded approach. Mothra and KG were too CGI for my tastes. My favorite fight in this film was Godzilla vs Baragon.
Originally the movie was slated to pit Godzilla against Baragon, Anguirus and Varan, with Anguirus filling the role of God of Water and Varan the role of God of the Skies. They decided to use Mothra and Ghidorah instead, however, because they are much more popular and well known compared to the other three (despite the fact that Anguirus had quite a few recurring roles in the Showa series).
However, since Mothra and Ghidorah are both portrayed as more powerful monsters much of the time, Godzilla's complete thrashing of them is a more impactful sight. It helps to drive home the idea that he is once more the unstoppable force of destruction he was in the 1954 film, hence making him feel scarier. Though one decision I'm glad they made was cutting the mazer weapons the military would use in Godzilla x Baragon, Anguirus, Varan in favor of more realistic modern weaponry.
I'd like this VERY much as KG's theme in King of Monsters, has more 'umph' and bares better impression in modern cinema. I absolutely love the original, but I at least would like some of G.M.K's music in here, because it is quite epic and can be a nice reference.
This movie had a very different feel to it than the others. More of a mystical kinda feel, hell even Godzilla felt more like a ancient god than a product of nuclear war. which i think worked for it, one of the best. Though I am pissed that Ghidorah's roll changed, but hey can't go with the same old song and dance, except Mothra, should've been replaced with Angurius or Varan.
At this point it's an argument of semantics. Godzilla's power in this movie can be pretty safely considered to be near the strength of Burning Godzilla from Godzilla v Desotroyah, which would flatten a full powered Ghidorah and Mothra with little effort. At the same time, it could be considered the same as it was in the 1954 film and Ghidorah and Mothra could be weakened. Either way, it's the same result: Godzilla is the same unstoppable force in GMK that he was in the '54 film.
I think Mothra should have been rplace with either Rodan or something that would closely simular to water since mothra was said to be the spirit/go of water in this movie (hence his theme). So somethig simular to mothra int hat sence. If they used rodan that would be like the spirit of fire amybe haha. Though it'd be nice to see rodan, gamera, or destroyah as a character in this movie
Grandmaster Sparky If you want to get technical about it, none of the Toho movies are "canon". How many reboots has the company made these past 60+ years since 1954?
@Dragonzord571 i was pissed at the ending how godzilla exploded and there was nothing left of him but his heart. would've been one of my favorite (if not my favorite) if it had a darker ending like showing godzilla completely intact or having one of the main character's die (they did it in other godzilla movies).
9 years ago but it is still dark....way more than you think. They didnt win they postponed the inevitable as the people will forget once again and when they do the souls will come once again and this time ....no guardian monsters..its game over.
the GMK Godzilla was alright, I never buy into the whole supernatural thing where godzilla is pretty much a revenant of the restless souls of those killed as a result of the Japanese military during WW2
well if that were the case then it should have been different, I think the case would be that Anguirus should have been the god of earth, gamera the god of water and king ghidora the god of the skies. simply because it would have been more fitting imo. or something more like roda being the god of earth or something like that.
If the case of using King Ghidora, then they should have probabl switched it for Yamata no Orochi, not like he's a TOHO character that they can't use. Making a new monster in this case.
They only used mothra and ghidorah because they are more marketable. Not because it would have made a better movie, which I don't think it did. I think they should have stuck to the original idea as all of them are OLD kaiju, ghidorah is newer
True, but it was kinda jarring to see this monster, that on several occasions, tried to destroy the earth be good, or at least neutral. That's just my opinion anyway and I did like how they handled it.
Instead of Mothra and KG, it was going to be Anguirus and Varan. Would have been interesting and make more sense to have smaller monsters instead of shrinking 2 large n powerful monsters.
Christian Beaty As a Ghidorah fan I was ecstatic at seeing him be a good guy for once. What I didn't like was the power-down he and Mothra both got. I personally think that Matt Franks neo version of it including Baragon, Varan, and Manda would have been the best choice as the guardian monsters are all supposed to represent an "element" Baragon is earth, Manda is water, and Varan is air. And seeing Manda empowered and godzilla fighting essentially a godly oriental dragon would have been awesome.
Somebody tell why didn't this role to Varan and of all times this is the first and only time Ghidra is good but other than that it's still a good movie
I see that your not happy with this, and its ok ;) But as most of the Millenium-Saga movies, this one ignores every former godzilla movie except for the original. So Ghidorah has no history in this film and is portrayed as a good Monster.
wrong they did in fact make mothra and ghidorah far more weaker then they normally are. If i was to give a guess they are at least 1/3 their normal strength all the while making godzilla unbelievable more stronger then he normally is.

This movie had the coolest version of ghidorah
Alex Bush yep
+Godzilla King of the monsters it's official ghidorah has the coolest theme in the entire movies!

+Godzilla King of the monsters i ment he has the coolest theme in the movie gmk
I wish they'd stuck with having Varan instead. He's an awesome kaiju in desperate need of revamping.
Agreed.
Should've been anguirus in my opinion, since he's a lot more iconic than either. But varan would've been nice too.
King caesar would've been neat, bc hes already a mystical guardian kind of kaiju

I'm kinda glad Anguirus wasn't in this. I hate seeing my boy get hurt.

"Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All Out Attack" is the first and only Godzilla movie that portrayed King Ghidorah as a good guy.
There's four key problems with that idea:
1) Like Godzilla, Anguirus is partially aquatic, that aspect is established in Godzilla Raids Again and other Showa films.
2) Baragon is already established as a burrowing creature, making him perfect for God of Earth.

King Ghidorah's theme is godlike.
This is my 2nd favorite godzilla movie I love the music for it's so ancient
Godzillas theme: death and destruction fueled by rage.
Ghidorah's theme: hope and royalty that will either stop or stall destruction.
yay ghidorah was finally good
Fairly dumbed down even more in the story apparently as an immature Orochi.
Now, can you imagine a Ghidorah with eight heads? That'd be fun to see.
I see what you're saying here and to a point I can agree, but I personally like that they were able to leave the movie open ended with that final scene. I love GMK
I like the spirit of this theme. It would be even cooler remastered and drawn out to be more of a full song.
Did Ghidorah turn face and Godzilla heel?
I think Mothra healed Ghidorah because Godzilla may have gone out of control or something.
Godzilla can't be a heel. No one is going to boo him
In GMK, Godzilla is straight up evil, and Mothra and Ghidorah are guardian spirits of the Earth.

GMK Godzilla is a the original one brought back to life by Japanese soldiers forgotten during world war 2 to seek revenge on Japan Baragon Mothra and King Ghidora are 3 ancient guardians of Japan
