As a 31 year old second daughter, I'm so glad for these videos. My Dad's knees and back and...welll everything, don't work like they used to and I definitely have to stop calling him hoping he can just explain it to me cause the man will drive an hour to come do it himself. Love seeing him, don't want it to have to be because he's doing something I can do on my own if just taught 😅
@@westhighlandsshop It's been a great learning experience from what I call the 'dads and papaws' of TH-cam. And a thing I love about the platform itself, giving generations of us who weren't taught or maybe just want to learn or enjoy listening to someone who's knowledgable in something we've never thought of do just that. Much love from NC ❤
It looks magnificent, dare I say "Regal"? 😂😂😂. But VINTAGE??? Come on now, we are all older than 1980 and we're not vintage, are we? Hmm maybe we are. I don't know, but no matter how old I get, I doubt I will ever think of something from the 80's as "vintage". Thanks for a great video! 👍😀😎
I realized a few months ago that I am vintage! I'm really getting into 80's stuff and bringing back so many memories, so that's why I consider it vintage. LOL. Found and subbed to your channel today and will be looking back over your videos soon. Thanks, David
I'm glad it sparked some good memories for you. I'm featuring my Dad's old tool box in a coming video. He didn't have much in the way of tools, but cool that I have this. Thanks for watching.
I just bought this same tool box along with the other two pieces that go on top for $175 off marketplace. Has some rust on the top but other than that it’s in really good shape. Thank you for your video 🙏🏼 I’m painting mine yellow and black 😊
Nice work. I've restored 3 bottoms and 2 tops of these Craftsman cabinets. I use Rustoleum Sunrise red. To me it is a closer match to OE. For the drawers I use Rustoleum Black Stainless Steel paint color. Almost a 100 % match to the grayish color from that period. I also redid an early work bench that had the red drawers with gray sides and switched it to gray drawers and red sides to match. As the OCD kicked in I took 2 small 6 drawer metal cabinets from Ikea and also painted them in the Craftsman colors.
Thank you very much. I have used Sunrise Red in the past, it is similar to the Regal Red. I'm about done with the Regal Red, it takes days and days to dry and I don't get it. You'll see this Friday I use Sunrise on another project and dried solid overnight! I'll have to look into the Black Stainless, really appreciate that tip.
I am just finishing up a similar Craftsman box, top and bottom with 24 drawers total. I painted them all inside and out. I did not know what I was getting into. About the same surface area as a car!! I used Rustoleum too, but by the quart, thinned with acetone and I used a hardner for added durability, sprayed with a HF purple gun. This was easily a $1,000 paint job if hired out...easily!! I had about $100 in materials and about 25+ hours labor, not including moving tools in and out. Rustoleum gloss black and their gray mixed 50/50 makes a nice dark gray almost identical to the original Craftsman color
Hey Barry, man that tool chest sounds awesome! That is quite some paint job you put on it and I'm sure it is beautiful and better than the factory! I was thinking about doing similar on day. I have several other videos with boxes and chest and have a few more to put out, but nothing as fancy as yours! I wish you had a YT channel so we could all see that.
I've been looking for these old boxes nearly every day. This past year I picked up four of them. I'm still looking for another 1980's box to match one I have. tHanks for a great video!
Good luck, I'm sure you will do fine. These wear me out, I have at least 3 more I would like to cleanup or completely restore, but going to have to wait for now!
Looks beautiful David. I have that exact same tool chest with the matching toolbox that sits on top. I have used it almost every day for many years and it still looks new. Well done! Bill.
Think the paint is latex paint, which comes off easily with ipa alcohol, and the degreaser was acting with possibly overspray from brake cleaner. I have one too, now in Ireland via England. Purchased by an accountant in Alabama, then shipped to UK in 1995, when he and family moved back. Dry ptfe spray is the best for the slides and it wont stain clothes and stays in place longer than oil or grease
I appreciate your comment and you are probably right, I should have painted it as well. It does have a really good coat of the Rust-Fix on it which will 100% protect it from rusting. Thanks for always tuning in.
I enjoy watching your tool box restoration videos. Makes me want to tackle mine someday. One comment. . . you could mute the fast speed sounds in your edits to emphasize the work and not the squeaky noises.
Thanks for watching and the great comment Bob. I have been working on the editing skills and will improve on the squeaky sounds, I don’t like them either!
Its good to get tools and storage that need a little work if you can get it at a reduced rate. Nice job on this cabinet. I was noticing your yellow vacuum would you mind saying what make and model, would you recommend it? Thanks
I have older Craftsman boxes that I have covered in a video where you can see the slides are made differently, with a spring release that is much easier to disengage to remove the drawers and slides. Recently at work I looked closely at several Kennedy Tool boxes in our machine shop and they have what looks like exactly the same slides as my older Craftsman boxes, so it appears that Kennedy was making the Craftsman boxes at some point in the past!
I had to go back and see what you were talking about, that is funny. Had the Mineral Spirits can sitting in the back ground! You can actually see the neck of the alcohol can in the foreground. Thanks for watching!
W 186 I believe means manufactured in January of 1986. As for the "W" it's possible that was the stamp for SK Tools although there isn't much info online regarding letters in the mfg date code.
I’m wondering you adjust the tab or something. Not sure where to get new slides but eBay is probably your best bet. Don’t know if they are made anymore
I don't know if it matches Craftsman's red, but Rust-Oleum has a specialty paint called "Toolbox Red." Juts an fyi for anybody considering doing a toolbox restoration.
Does the spray paint hold up to scratches being a tool box I wouldn’t think it would hold up very well but every video I have seen on toolbox restoration they used spray paint
Well, it does hold up pretty good. I always let mine dry for a few days and then 2-4 coats of clear on top. Once it sets for awhile it does become a durable finish. The cure time is key, it will get hard. Of course it isn't going to stand up the rigors of daily use on a tool box. Mine are being used to store and display my tool collection. I have painted many other items (like my daily use vise) around my shop with rattle cans that get used on a regular basis and it holds up okay. I don't have powder coating or some sort of industrial paint with a spray system. Most people don't and that's why you see so many painting with rattle cans. Good paint inside, not the best delivery system. Hope this helps and thanks for watching.
Yes to both, I filmed this last year and I live in NC. I had some hand surgery back in Dec that was putting me out of the shop for 3-4 months, but was able to return a little sooner than expected. Just can't do as much as not for extended times. So, I've been using some older footage until I can catch up.
I have that same one as well, little bit taller box and the top drawer is a tray. I guess is designed as a work surface, assuming you would have another box stacked on top. Thanks for watching
Terrific.I have the same rollaway purchased in 1983ish. Doing garage makeover the toolbox restoration is on the list.
Great to hear, you've got a real classic there! Good luck with the garage makeover and the tool chest restoration. Thanks for watching!

That's awesome! It looks like it's sales floor ready! Nice trick with the hacksaw blade. You really do great work David.
Thank ya brother. Learned that hacksaw blade trick right here on TH-cam. Takes a bit to get it working right.
This Is A Great Job
Thanks for the comment and watching the channel!
My dad was an auto mechanic. He died in 1981. This box reminds me of him. Thanks for the memories. Great job, too.

Thanks Vic, have plenty more to do……someday. 🤣
I wonder if Waterloo made it in January of 86' Great job!!!!
About to fix up a large snap on box. Watching for tips. Gonna be a solid project. I’m ready
Good luck, I'm sure you will do fine. These wear me out, I have at least 3 more I would like to cleanup or completely restore, but going to have to wait for now!
Very nice. I really need to find time to do the tool box I was given. Thank you for the video and instructions.
Thanks Ryan. They can be a pain, but it's like getting a new one!
Nice job on the restoration. I'm happy 357magdad recommended your channel. Subscribed and rang the bell.

What color of red again. And did you use a gloss black paint? Sorry but I’m hard hearing.
Very nice! I have a similar Craftsman box thats tired! I think ill do mine one of these years!!
It's a little bit of work, but satisfying at the same time. Thanks for watching!

I added the Craftsman Pads, when I got mine. The top also has a pad.
I bet that looks nice! Thanks for tuning in.
Looks like you went with a black paint for the drawers, instead of the gray. Was it not possible to match the gray?
Best I could tell the drawers were black to start with. I liked the black anyway. Thanks for watching.
Great job, looks great! What color black did you use on the drawers?
Appreciate it! I believe it was Rustoleum 2X in satin black.
I got the exact same chest and one of the drawers keeps coming off the slider. Can you buy new ones?

Amazon of course. Went back to get more and they didn’t have the same thing but found one very similar. Pretty decent stuff.
