My grandfather used plantain on his leg to cure a patch of skin cancer he had, back in the 90s! We call it Llantén

About 7 years ago I had a bite that I had gotten from the garden while I was working... I wasn't sure if it was a spider at first but it got very inflamed that night and so I had read that a plantain poultice would help pull the poison out. I went out in my yard late that night and found plantain...chewed it up and made a bandage for my leg. It was practically well the next day...then healed completely. 😊

I just found your channel and subscribed Located on the Mississippi golf coast in the bayou. Everyone tells me I need to weed my garden and I have to tell them this is food and medicine along with chicken feet😂 What people call weeds are more nutritious than what is sold in the supermarkets👍

It also pulls items. My husband had surgery a few years ago on his clavicle and had a knot of suture stuck in his skin for at least 2 years. I tried pulling it out to no avail. Then, I had the idea to put plaintain root tincture on a bandaid overnight. It came out easily the very next day. I just wanted to push a little to try again with tweezers, and it popped right out. Great for splinters, too. That example just astonished me.

Plantain was the first herb I foraged. My grown boys and even my husband 😮swear by the salve for bites and poison ivy. The seed heads of the narrow leaf variety are even more fun. Wrap the stem around itself just below the head, aim at a sibling, and pop the head off! They’ll fly several feet 😂

Since I live in a townhome with only common areas that are chemically sprayed and also used by animals, I decided several years ago to grow broad leaf and narrow leaf plantain plants in a pot under a grow light. They did very well. I have made salve for bug bites and skin irritations. My kids live away from me, but I have given them little jars. One young grandson has called it “Oma’s special medicine” and asks for it for mosquito & other bug bites.😂

When I was a very young boy I had hit my smallest finger with a hammer and lost the nail. It had gotten considerably infected. My grandmother was visiting and she told me to go outside and get a weed that looked like a big spoon. It was the broadleaf plantain. She wrapped it around my finger, put a piece of tape around it to hold it in place. Within a few days all the infection wad gone and it heeled very quickly. Your videos are inspiring. Thanks

I've been using plantain for years with stings and bites; This past year I learned it and its narrow-leafed cousin can be added to "cold/allergy remedy teas". I make one with pine needles/violet leaves/turkey-tail/plantains/honey. Works like a charm, treating symptoms and cause...and it tastes better than one might think.

I use plantain and make a tea. After it cools I strain and store the liquid in the refrigerator for a week or so. It is wonderful to get rid of the itch of poison ivy. Just use a cloth or cotton pad to cover the itchy patches. It stops the itch right away. Reapply as needed.

And yes- I’ve done the quick chew poultice on mosquito bites for my little ones. It’s a little gross but really quite effective! Thanks for teaching all the great herbal actions plantain offers. I've made several salves. Plantain is always my base, then I add others depending on what I'm looking for. I use. Calendula, comfrey, oregano, thyme, lavender, dead nettle vit E to preserve, and a few drops of tea tree oil. I actually cleared a staff infection I had on my face from butchering chickens a few weeks ago(unfortunately poop happens) I remember it splashing on my face and thinking omg I have to wash, but then we we're so focused on getting the job done I didn't remember until several hours later(so gross I know). Anyway Dr said staff and gave me a prescription. I decided I'd try my salve first, and it worked in three days!!!! I was so impressed and no antibiotics necessary yay

I'm a big fan of plantain, and the nice thing is, it's everywhere! Our family has a big campout on Independence Day, and my 12-year-old grandson was walking barefoot to the pond, and stepped on a bee. My son had brought nothing to help (🙄) so we used a plantain poultice, and it never swelled or hurt again!

I was having a hard time finding it in a place that wasn’t under threat of doggy walks. I went scouring the back yard for it and finally saw a little bit.
I told my sister to inform the landscaping guy to “stop cutting the grass, I want the weeds to grow.”
This brought about some curious questions. Sometimes I enjoy looking crazy because it leads to educational opportunities.

I just finished making Plantain Salve. So easy. I used some on a chronic itchy rash with sores on my shoulder and the itch was gone immediately and after 2 days the sores are nearly gone also. I marinated fresh torn and dry to the touch leaves in olive oil for 3 weeks in a jar on a sunny warm window ledge. The jar was lidded and the oil did not go rancid. I will cover with cheese cloth next batch. I used a mix of both broad and narrow leaf plantain. I also have a ½ gallon jar of mullein tincture marinating in a dark corner of my pantry too. It'll be ready to process in a few more weeks. Mullein offers great benefits for the lungs!

It stopped that irritating burn within minutes. And it’s like that cut isn’t even there today. No pain. No inflammation you can still see the cut… but it’s just that… 🥰👍♥️ And two weeks ago I seen the medical herbalism book on sale so I bought it! 😁

A crock pot is usually a little too warm, some brands worse than others, but you can use them with an Inkbird thermometer switch, which will regulate temperature to a better range. Yogurt makers work. Some Instant Pots have a yogurt setting. I used to put jars under a black plastic pot in the sun and have to bring it in every night. Since I have been using the thermometer switch with the slow cooker, the quality of my oil maceration has really gone up and it is much quicker and less hassle. My oil doesn't get rancid and the herb essences seem better. Low consistent warm temperature is so superior.
We have more narrow leaf plantain here. Noticed some of it in the photo with the broadleaf picking. I use it wilted fresh usually. Seems lackluster dry. We lose it in the summer heat and dryness. It is wet season/cool season plant around here, so it would be nice to preserve some.

What is the typical shelf life of the salve and the oil? We have lots of plantain here and I love it! Such a beautiful plant!

during covid lockdowns I had to help a friend with a black widow bite. Plantain was all we had. It worked better than I had expected. but we used it as a poultice and a tea. In a normal situation GO TO THE ER! We were LUCKY!!! But if you cant get to an ER right away ya get this on it to help! But for the love of all things Get to an ER!
I happen to be a certified herbalist. if we had not used enough my friend may have had a different result! so you ask how much is enough? I honestly dont know. We were Lucky!!!! any other time I would have skipped the plant all together and just got to the ER as fast as possible! but if your Hiking in the woods and its going to take you hours to get to a car use the plantain if you have it available!!

I'll admit I winced when you talked about using fresh herb in your oil infusion. Infusing fresh herb into oil is a bad idea. The moisture, even if you let it vent, can still encourage the growth of bacteria and mold. If you must use fresh herb, then let it wilt and dry for at least a day before starting your infusion so there's as little moisture as possible... and use the oil quickly.
That said, the fresh herb is a better choice for the reduced decoction that makes the base of a syrup. I use plantain syrup to control my asthma since it works better than the steroid inhaler that my doctor prescribed. It's anti-inflammatory properties are a godsend for asthma, bronchitis, and pneumonia... and covid.

@TheHomestead I’ve just watched a video where someone uses a French coffee press to filter infused oils and tinctures to stop it absorbing into the muslin fabric and wasting some of it. Have you tried that?

My husband found out that stinging nettle has stingers on the bottom of the leaves too 😂 I used plantain and he said “wow that actually works!”
My 3 y/o daughter had a blister and I used some on that as well. She was so excited about mommy’s healing leaf! I really want to use some in oil or tincture. Would the tincture be a decent expectorant? I’m trying to find what I can harvest in my own backyard before buying other weeds 😂

What did you use for a reference for your alc% in the plantain tincture? If fresh I thought you needed more than 50%.

I use it for a stop bleed, dried, and powdered. Just pour it on, and it works immediately. No band-aid necessary. I can't pick enough to keep up with my hubby, who is on blood thinners. I provide some for a friend who owns a restaurant. He likes it so well he had asked me for a burn salve of some sort. Does anyone have a good burn salve recipe?
