    i just did Bates. In a year I went from -2 to -0.5. Bates forces you to adopt all kinds of very healthy lifestyle habits like deep relaxation and a top notch diet regimen. So Bates isn't just good for your sight... its good for your entire nervous system and brain. After adopting Bates my blood pressure and pulse dropped to "low normal" from "high normal" and my body fat % went from 20% to 13%.

    I personally thing it is not a good surgery. I've had it, and its been one of the biggest regrets of my life. i was much better off before the surgery. I wish i was more knowledgable on the surgery prior to doing it but i trusted the doctors and went for it. i think there are more patients that should be screened out but due to financial reasons are not. IMO, i think having a certain prescription should serve as a contraindication for the surgery (much lower then they allow currently) as the risk go up a lot. I would undo the surgery in a heartbeat if i could.

      Hi Jake, thanke you for sharing your experience and for your comment. I'm sorry that LASIK did not work out for you and I completely agree that patient screening, selection, and education about risks are extremely important. A complication or bad side effect can have devastating consequences.

    patients are definetely not counseled properly on the surgery, nor the risk, nor the long term safety. we are thinning the cornea and sometimes to unsafe amounts. additionally, tears are like nutrition for the cornea, dry eye isnt just dry eye. its essentially starving the eyes of proper nourishment.

    • @MicheleLeeMD

      I really appreciate this comment and agree that we need to do a better job emphasizing the risks of surgery. LASIK is definitely not a good idea for everyone and we need to get better at screening out those who should not get it.

      @@MicheleLeeMD thanks for your reply. I truly believe it is not a good surgery IMO. Although I am not an eye doctor, I do work in healthcare (I did the surgery prior to my healthcare career), and I have done a lot a research on the surgery. The risk are also much higher than stated. My issue is that I was able to make this conclusion yet ophthalmologist still promote it. Additionally, the nerves in the cornea from my understanding do not come back to pre-op levels. They play a vital role in the health of the eye. Even the former FDA person (Morris Waxler) who approved the surgery had second thoughts and wanted to ban this surgery due to higher risk than published. I feel deceived and put my trust in doctors who downplayed many risk. There are a ton of people online who share this same feeling of regret and feeling like the surgery is overall not as good as its promoted. Sorry for my rant but I just want to let others know of my experience and that to thoroughly research and read on lasik complications website before undergoing this procedure. Knowing what I do now, I would have never done it. Don't play with your eyes, not worth the risk for an elective surgery.

      @@jakec5618 I really appreciate your feedback and for sharing your story. We need to be better about emphasizing the serious nature of the risks of LASIK. LASIK does decrease the number and function of cornea nerve and cornea sensation, and neurotrophic keratitis (cornea inflammation and infection from decreased sensation) is one of the hardest eye conditions I treat in the cornea clinic.

      the consultation with the lasik surgeon about mono lasik was about 5 minutes..... the surgeon did say he gave his wife mono lasik (she is also a doctor). I should have done more research on my end but The surgeon didn't even offer to let me try monovision... every surgeon on youtube says to let the patient try it.... im getting used to monovision but he should have let me try it and he should have told me it could take several months to adapt to monovision, its been a month, and im just now able to see "ok" while driving at night....all he said was "you'll be fine, when you wake up the morning after surgery you will see clear"

  • @jakec5618

    is there any way to regenerate the cornea? Like "undoing" what lasik does. To restore the cornea, nerves, and function to how it originally was. I know this research either may not even being done, or if it is, it's far away.

    Hi Dr Lee, thanks for this informative video. I have a family history with glaucoma and recently had a procedure on myself from my opthalmologist for something called open angle glaucoma.
    My Dr said the procedure/treatment was done to prevent/ control glaucoma. I have been getting my eyes checked approximately every 6-8 months with a visual field test.
    Out of curiosity, would I still be a possible candidate for Lasik?

    Hello Dr. Lee, I am currently considering getting LASIK (or maybe PRK) I am in my mid 30's and I am a perfect candidate for LASIK , I have an astigmatism and headlights at night already give me some issues , will LASIK make this worse or can it actually help ? also I have never had any symptoms of dry eyes (quite the opposite actually) do I still run the risk of dry eye from LASIK ? Thanks

      @MicheleLeeMD  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi there! Yes, even if you don't have dry eye, LASIK will almost always induce temporary dry eye. Most of the time, you can get on top of it with tears and treatments as needed. Hope that helps!

    Thank you so much for your honest opinion. I am 38 and have sensitive, dry and teary eye. I'm booked in for a pre-surgery consultation and I'm afraid that the doctor may not be honest enough to say that I'm not a good candidate. Should I cancel my appointment? I'm so concerned about possible complications.

      Try the Bates method with Nathan Oxenfeld or Mark Warren. Nathan Oxenfeld's book is ~$30 and its packed with great info. I went from -2 to -0.5 in 1 year.

      It's understandable to be nervous about eye surgery. Did you seek a second opinion before originally deciding to move forward with LASIK? Do you know anybody who had LASIK where you were originally going to get it done?
