@@Iranoutofideasforachannelname make it make sense? bet. it’s because we KNOW what nicole’s environment is - we know essentially nothing about crispin’s backstory so it’s easy to label him as a creep. we feel for nicole and try and justify her actions not only because her actions are partly the fault of you as the player, but also because we understand what led to this point. jeffery is the only other character the game explores in depth, and even still we only get snippets of what his life is like outside of school. he watches anime and cartoons obsessively, is into some weird shit, his step-dad is abusive and collects guns, and his mum… makes packed lunches for him? sure he’s a product of his environment and social isolation just as nicole is the product of hers and the player’s choices, but can you see how it’s harder to feel for him, especially if you’ve never been in his position? it’s a game where you play as the troubled high school bully every anti bullying psa told you about and get rewarded for doing so with funny dialogue and voice acting, and the bullied child lashes out either by killing you and everyone else in the school, or sexually harassing you. unless you the player have been bullied or socially isolated, what would make you want to feel for him and his situation when that seems like such a major overreaction? i personally would not defend jeffery, but find his character incredibly interesting and perhaps an insight into the creator’s own life in high school. i think it’s an unfortunate plight, but don’t condone his actions any more than i would condone nicole’s. i’ve never seen anyone fully excuse what nicole does, as a matter of fact - she is unequivocally the villain in this story lol as an aside, the antagonisation of the rest of the male characters also isn’t helped by our main character’s own perception of them as either molestors, white nationalists or sexually abusive, so it’s easy to draw conclusions on her behalf

One thing I might add to the Jecka analysis is that, intentional or not, the two games imply her choices and morally dubious behaviour are a phase. It is primarily due to character rewrites but The Re Up has her play the moral conscience of the duo a lot more to the point where she outright abandons Nicole in multiple routes.

I’m gonna be honest, Jeffery seemed too socially inept to know what he was even part of. He did not pick up any hints whatsoever that Nichole was giving to him and everything flew over his head instead of his normal reaction we see when he actually knows what’s being said to him. He was basically in the recruitment stage where they keep the mask on and act nice in order to prime them for brainwashing into the cult instead of actually brainwashed.
Becoming a school shooter comes down to a choice that the player, and by extension Nichole makes, with the alternative being the route merging with others and everything going back to normal. So yes, I would agree Jeffrey was pushed too hard by others, especially Nichole.

I still have a prevailing theory that be it metaphorically and physically, Nicole and Principal Lynn are reflections of the same person just distinguished with age/experience. Given the instances where we can see how both react to the same situation in real time, Nicole is the youthful snappy nihilist while Lynn is the experienced defeated cynic who understands the literal nature of life while having the self awareness to realize her life sucks, not life in general. Also the only adult in the school who isn’t a terrible person is the drama teacher. A drama teacher in a story about hyperbolic high school drama.
Age, yes, experience, maybe not. Lynn even admits that despite her experience, Nichole seems to be better at separating her emotions when it comes to those she associates with.
For really the only other character with development not rated, the principal. She's probably needs fixing. She's basically a well-adjusted Nicole, who actually reached a position of power. It is clear her school is very poorly disciplined and maintained. However, at least in most emergency scenarios, she seems to act responsibly. The mall cop obviously should get jail time, but probably would just get paid leave.
It’s more likely than anything the reason she isn’t improving the school much is she _can’t._ most of the teachers either have dirt on her or are sexist enough that they just won’t listen to her, and it is shown that she wants to take action against certain teachers but literally just can’t. (Mr white, the gym teacher, etc.)

Kyler is probably one of the most complicated characters, despite all his bravado and talk about violence against women, he doesn't do anything aggressive when Nichole rejects him in the arc where he jumps. It seems like he just fronts being tough, and otherwise seems to lack confidence in private.

I think crispin can seem normal but I think he encapsulates the “just want to fuck but isn’t outward about it” kind of personality which is pretty relevant and the only reason it never goes that far because Nicole sees through it and doesn’t entertain him ever. He always pops up in weird places (i.e. in the girl's bathroom), mentioned that he was on probation (for what idk), outright lost interest in talking to Nicole and Jecka when they flat out mentioned they won't have sex with him, "tried" to seem like having sex with Nicole (I think they were at her house?) wasn't a goal of his when she flat out told him she wouldn't only for him to immediately suggest it again, and Jecka even said it wouldn't surprise her if he'd burn down a convenience store. Oh yeah, he somehow got ahold of Nicole's number and sent her a wholly unsolicited duck pic after having had one of the most painfully drawn out hostage conversations I've ever seen. It really makes you think he's using an "airheaded" persona as an act.

I think out of all the characters, Jecka is my fav hands down. I like how she is still a shit person, but still does care about others and school. Personally, I feel like if someone is constantly harassed, has very few friends, and literally gets bleach thrown on them m, while that doesn’t excuse their actions, but you can at least understand how a normal person might break under those circumstances. If they go through three years of heavy bullying, have no support system, and are manipulated by the only person they like, it’s easy to see how even a regular person might be pushed to make extreme decisions. I’m not trying to excuse Jeffrey’s actions, but I feel like, given his specific circumstances, he shouldn’t be judged as harshly at least as a fictional character.

i take the highest offense to the intro assuming class of '09 takes place in the midwest the games pretty concretely set in the dc metro area (the school seems to be located in northern virginia) and as someone who grew up here and had siblings attend rich nova schools this game is 1000% accurate to not just american highschool but rich white dc highschool
When looking at character behaviors you neglected to look at side effects and withdrawal symptoms of drugs they are on. Nicole's mother for example isn't different from the first game if you look at how she's abruptly unreasonable and enraged at one point, because her behavior depends where she's medicated or withdrawing from Vicodin and other "really not supposed to commit insurance fraud to get a steady supply of" meds at the time. Kylar was stated to be actually retarded which is swept under the rug and his anger issues seen to come from both his mental disability and his Percocet dependence due to the solution of the coach and most definitely his parents to him suffering a debilitating knee injury that should have put him out of sports was getting him on an opioid to make him be able to go unaffected by the pain. It's even repeatedly mentioned to be a common thing with sports kids to turn into pharmacies after a serious injury. Jeffrey is a complicated character because on the surface he just seems to be awkward and just lacking in social skills, but if you read the text messages in the first game it turns out he's obsessed with Nicole on an unhealthy level, seriously schizophrenic, seemingly has bipolar tendencies and potentially psychotic considering in the ending where Nicole's perspective says that Mr. White committed suicide bombing and a bunch of girls according to the ending CG had enough DNA on the bomb for evidence to be recovered on them, Jeffrey's text drops a serial killer calling card strongly implying he killed Mr. White and technically killstole the event the teacher planned a terrorist attack on. The text after the ending where Nicole's life is ruined after Jeffrey takes the photo and she tries to break the photo lab essays about how empty his life have been since he got rid of Nicole and failed to get into college, and ends with his motive for doing it "I have decided she doesn't deserve beauty." which really shows the receits(aside Nicole calling his motivation of being bullied by her fake when recalling the one time she was mean to him, because remember it's also mentioned several times that she avoids him since the beginning of the school year) on his whole innocent victim act in the secret ending scene, which might be just boiling down to him being disassociative in the first place. He is seemingly completely undiagnosed and non-medicated so his various behaviors don't come from drug abuse. In the Re-Up Jeffrey is practically a different person altogether. Not only he actually has diverse interests lining up with the average weeb of the generation rather than a weird fixation on cute girl shows and nothing else, but also shows that this version actually just has the issue of lacking common interests with his peers considering in one scene he was getting together with Karen who shared his nerdy interests.

This game takes place in the DCVA area. They constantly reference nearby points like Fairfax and Falls Church (VA) PG county (Prince George County MD) and the Beltway (I-495, which wraps around DC), even referencing things like the ESL kids. The scariest thing for me is that, because it’s a mostly white-kid school in a well to do neighborhood, this was probably based on Yorktown High School in Arlington, which those of us at Wakefield and Washington Lee always hated for being snobs 😂

My take away after both games was that everyone (except Karen I guess) is very capable of criminal or extremely dangerous activity and virtually no one deserves simpathy.

A lot of kids get "diagnosed" with different mental disorders, get prescription meds, and later trade them with the other kids who have different meds. I didn't really see to much of this. There was frequent pot and adderall use, but I think it was mostly because I kept to myself and probably didn't see everything that went on. I also graduated around the same time. I also attended public school, but you had to apply to get in. Bully existed, but it was a lot more elaborate and was more manipulation driven that brain dead Kylar style. Karens, Aris, and Meghans were probably the most common, but there was one or two Nicoles as well. Most of the other types were a bit too dumb or exaggerated. One of the Nicoles got two other students expelled and got no punishment despite them manipulating them into doing the things to get them kicked out.

6:10 i live in a town where we separate high school a little bit. there’s high school (9-10) & senior high school (11-12). as a senior, both schools i went to didn’t have sex education as a class. closest i got to sex ed were health class, medical terminology & health science theory. & even then, the former & the latter’s units on reproductive stuff were mainly about the organs & regarding contraception, they acted like abstinence was the only way. it was either abstinence or wait until marriage. & the worst part about is that these teachers acted like they expected all of the kids in my class to stay abstinent when half of them already weren’t virgins. public school in texas is fucking wild, dude, i hate it here 😭😭😭

I think this game is funny and enjoyable to play. Yes, I do think a lot of it is satirical of the reality many experienced during the 2000s. Immense bullying, eating disorders were rampant, and yes lots of teens abused drugs (depending on the state / town, etc.) However I think it leaves out much needed context to flesh out why things were like that at the time. Which is why I think it is a funny game, but lacks some of the deeper elements to explain the culture. For example, women weren't just obsessed with their looks and taking drugs / smoking to suppress their appetite due to vanity. It's a full on eating disorder, and reflective of the body shaming and insane standards of the time (beyonce was considered "plus sized" in the 2000s don't forget.) I also think the "using your looks to get what you want" was a pretty shallow external view of another complex topic that was definitely written from a male perspective, not reality. As for your analysis, I think you were way to lenient on the male characters who were often just as flawed and horrible as the women in this game. Overall I think it is a fun game, but I don't really see deeper commentary within it.
Yeah, I think viewing the gals as only manipulators, as if they have no drives or ambitions of their own like the males more obviously do, is an odd perspective we get in the game. It presents itself as standing up for the hawt girl perspective, but then reads like an almost incelish take in which guys have desires, but girls don't have their own desires, sexual or otherwise, and only view things in terms of a big class of How Best to Manipulate and Hurt People 101. I went to high school in the same region as the game too, and it just wasn't like that in most cases.

I think this game has pointed out an issue that most people are aware of: the demand for anime with American/Western focused settings, stories, and characters is sky-high. And yet no major media companies are willing to fill that gigantic hole in the market, save a couple minor projects like the Boondocks or this game. I have a feeling that an anime similar to the story of this show would do incredibly well commercially, and probably make anime seem much more appealing to average American audiences.

I feel like this video is a bit lenient on the men, sadly though of the most realistic things about this game are the men in my opinion. Sure Jeffery is a stereotypical anime nerd who gets bullied, but he’s also a huge pervert who is proven to be willing to take pictures of girls in locker rooms. He also shot up a school. Kylar is 100% a raging misogynistic. From what I recall in one scene he said he wished he could move to the Middle East because they stoned women there. Anddd he’s also extreme bigoted in a lot of other ways. Plus he’s a rapist so there’s that too. Crispin isn’t nearly as bad as any of the other characters, but he definitely gives off that “nice guy” attitude. Like he believes that the girls would repay him with something after he is nice to them or sends them a dick pic. Plus I also remember him being in the girls bathroom for some reason, and considering this game it probably wasn’t for something good. Even though class of 09 is a total kickass game it’s honestly kinda sad, all the routes where Nicole tries to be nice, honest, or defend herself in a way that doesn’t hurt anybody the ending is always bad.

it’s because we KNOW what nicole’s environment is - we know essentially nothing about crispin’s backstory so it’s easy to label him as a creep. we feel for nicole and try and justify her actions not only because her actions are partly the fault of you as the player, but also because we understand what led to this point.
jeffery is the only other character the game explores in depth, and even still we only get snippets of what his life is like outside of school. he watches anime and cartoons obsessively, is into some weird shit, his step-dad is abusive and collects guns, and his mum… makes packed lunches for him? sure he’s a product of his environment and social isolation just as nicole is the product of hers and the player’s choices, but can you see how it’s harder to feel for him, especially if you’ve never been in his position? it’s a game where you play as the troubled high school bully every anti bullying psa told you about and get rewarded for doing so with funny dialogue and voice acting, and the bullied child lashes out either by killing you and everyone else in the school, or sexually harassing you. unless you the player have been bullied or socially isolated, what would make you want to feel for him and his situation when that seems like such a major overreaction?
i personally would not defend jeffery, but find his character incredibly interesting and perhaps an insight into the creator’s own life in high school. i think it’s an unfortunate plight, but don’t condone his actions any more than i would condone nicole’s. i’ve never seen anyone fully excuse what nicole does, as a matter of fact - she is unequivocally the villain in this story lol
as an aside, the antagonisation of the rest of the male characters also isn’t helped by our main character’s own perception of them as either molestors, white nationalists or sexually abusive, so it’s easy to draw conclusions on her behalf

One thing I might add to the Jecka analysis is that, intentional or not, the two games imply her choices and morally dubious behaviour are a phase. It is primarily due to character rewrites but The Re Up has her play the moral conscience of the duo a lot more to the point where she outright abandons Nicole in multiple routes.

I’m gonna be honest, Jeffery seemed too socially inept to know what he was even part of. I still have a prevailing theory that be it metaphorically and physically, Nicole and Principal Lynn are reflections of the same person just distinguished with age/experience. Given the instances where we can see how both react to the same situation in real time, Nicole is the youthful snappy nihilist while Lynn is the experienced defeated cynic who understands the literal nature of life while having the self awareness to realize her life sucks, not life in general.
Also the only adult in the school who isn’t a terrible person is the drama teacher. A drama teacher in a story about hyperbolic high school drama.
If it helps, Principal Lynn does tell Nicole she thinks they're not too different in an ending Nicole graduates.
Age, yes, experience, maybe not. Lynn even admits that despite her experience, Nichole seems to be better at separating her emotions when it comes to those she associates with.
For really the only other character with development not rated, the principal. She's probably needs fixing. She's basically a well-adjusted Nicole, who actually reached a position of power. It is clear her school is very poorly disciplined and maintained. However, at least in most emergency scenarios, she seems to act responsibly. The mall cop obviously should get jail time, but probably would just get paid leave.
It’s more likely than anything the reason she isn’t improving the school much is she _can’t._ most of the teachers either have dirt on her or are sexist enough that they just won’t listen to her, and it is shown that she wants to take action against certain teachers but literally just can’t. (Mr white, the gym teacher, etc.)

His judgement of Kyler is fairly spot on, but he didn't go in-depth. Kyler is probably one of the most complicated characters, despite all his bravado and talk about violence against women, he doesn't do anything aggressive when Nichole rejects him in the arc where he jumps. It seems like he just fronts being tough, and otherwise seems to lack confidence in private.

I think crispin can seem normal but I think he encapsulates the “just want to fuck but isn’t outward about it” kind of personality which is pretty relevant and the only reason it never goes that far because Nicole sees through it and doesn’t entertain him ever. Personally, I feel like if someone is constantly harassed, has very few friends, and literally gets bleach thrown on them m, while that doesn’t excuse their actions, but you can at least understand how a normal person might break under those circumstances. If they go through three years of heavy bullying, have no support system, and are manipulated by the only person they like, it’s easy to see how even a regular person might be pushed to make extreme decisions. I’m not trying to excuse Jeffrey’s actions, but I feel like, given his specific circumstances, he shouldn’t be judged as harshly at least as a fictional character.

When looking at character behaviors you neglected to look at side effects and withdrawal symptoms of drugs they are on.
Nicole's mother for example isn't different from the first game if you look at how she's abruptly unreasonable and enraged at one point, because her behavior depends where she's medicated or withdrawing from Vicodin and other "really not supposed to commit insurance fraud to get a steady supply of" meds at the time.
Kylar was stated to be actually retarded which is swept under the rug and his anger issues seen to come from both his mental disability and his Percocet dependence due to the solution of the coach and most definitely his parents to him suffering a debilitating knee injury that should have put him out of sports was getting him on an opioid to make him be able to go unaffected by the pain. It's even repeatedly mentioned to be a common thing with sports kids to turn into pharmacies after a serious injury.
Jeffrey is a complicated character because on the surface he just seems to be awkward and just lacking in social skills, but if you read the text messages in the first game it turns out he's obsessed with Nicole on an unhealthy level, seriously schizophrenic, seemingly has bipolar tendencies and potentially psychotic considering in the ending where Nicole's perspective says that Mr. White committed suicide bombing and a bunch of girls according to the ending CG had enough DNA on the bomb for evidence to be recovered on them, Jeffrey's text drops a serial killer calling card strongly implying he killed Mr. White and technically killstole the event the teacher planned a terrorist attack on.
The text after the ending where Nicole's life is ruined after Jeffrey takes the photo and she tries to break the photo lab essays about how empty his life have been since he got rid of Nicole and failed to get into college, and ends with his motive for doing it "I have decided she doesn't deserve beauty." which really shows the receits(aside Nicole calling his motivation of being bullied by her fake when recalling the one time she was mean to him, because remember it's also mentioned several times that she avoids him since the beginning of the school year) on his whole innocent victim act in the secret ending scene, which might be just boiling down to him being disassociative in the first place. He is seemingly completely undiagnosed and non-medicated so his various behaviors don't come from drug abuse.
In the Re-Up Jeffrey is practically a different person altogether. Not only he actually has diverse interests lining up with the average weeb of the generation rather than a weird fixation on cute girl shows and nothing else, but also shows that this version actually just has the issue of lacking common interests with his peers considering in one scene he was getting together with Karen who shared his nerdy interests.

The scariest thing for me is that, because it’s a mostly white-kid school in a well to do neighborhood, this was probably based on Yorktown High School in Arlington, which those of us at Wakefield and Washington Lee always hated for being snobs 😂

I guess a lot of it is caused by the extremely easy access to prescription pills. A lot of kids get "diagnosed" with different mental disorders, get prescription meds, and later trade them with the other kids who have different meds.
Here in Poland i used to bring vodka mixed with knockoff cola to school, not cough medicine.

I didn't really see to much of this. There was frequent pot and adderall use, but I think it was mostly because I kept to myself and probably didn't see everything that went on. I also graduated around the same time. I also attended public school, but you had to apply to get in. Bully existed, but it was a lot more elaborate and was more manipulation driven that brain dead Kylar style. Karens, Aris, and Meghans were probably the most common, but there was one or two Nicoles as well. Most of the other types were a bit too dumb or exaggerated. One of the Nicoles got two other students expelled and got no punishment despite them manipulating them into doing the things to get them kicked out.

6:10 i live in a town where we separate high school a little bit. there’s high school (9-10) & senior high school (11-12). as a senior, both schools i went to didn’t have sex education as a class. closest i got to sex ed were health class, medical terminology & health science theory. & even then, the former & the latter’s units on reproductive stuff were mainly about the organs & regarding contraception, they acted like abstinence was the only way. it was either abstinence or wait until marriage. & the worst part about is that these teachers acted like they expected all of the kids in my class to stay abstinent when half of them already weren’t virgins. public school in texas is fucking wild, dude, i hate it here 😭😭😭

we didn't get shit for sex ed. just anatomy of the reproductive system and no mention of birth control/condoms. they think teens are gonna listen to practicing abstinence, and yet they wont tell them how to have safe sex. this led to cases of pregnancy in my school. some of which are younger than juniors.

That's pretty much how it is in most Texan and southern schools. Teaching abstinence only!!! Like that does anything. I took health in 8th grade but I'm pretty sure at least a few kids were already doing it. I mean in my freshman year of highschool 2 girls in my grade already got pregnant.

I think this game is funny and enjoyable to play. Yes, I do think a lot of it is satirical of the reality many experienced during the 2000s. Immense bullying, eating disorders were rampant, and yes lots of teens abused drugs (depending on the state / town, etc.)
However I think it leaves out much needed context to flesh out why things were like that at the time. Which is why I think it is a funny game, but lacks some of the deeper elements to explain the culture. For example, women weren't just obsessed with their looks and taking drugs / smoking to suppress their appetite due to vanity. It's a full on eating disorder, and reflective of the body shaming and insane standards of the time (beyonce was considered "plus sized" in the 2000s don't forget.) I also think the "using your looks to get what you want" was a pretty shallow external view of another complex topic that was definitely written from a male perspective, not reality.
As for your analysis, I think you were way to lenient on the male characters who were often just as flawed and horrible as the women in this game. Overall I think it is a fun game, but I don't really see deeper commentary within it.
Yeah, I think viewing the gals as only manipulators, as if they have no drives or ambitions of their own like the males more obviously do, is an odd perspective we get in the game. It presents itself as standing up for the hawt girl perspective, but then reads like an almost incelish take in which guys have desires, but girls don't have their own desires, sexual or otherwise, and only view things in terms of a big class of How Best to Manipulate and Hurt People 101. I went to high school in the same region as the game too, and it just wasn't like that in most cases.

I think this game has pointed out an issue that most people are aware of: the demand for anime with American/Western focused settings, stories, and characters is sky-high. And yet no major media companies are willing to fill that gigantic hole in the market, save a couple minor projects like the Boondocks or this game.
I have a feeling that an anime similar to the story of this show would do incredibly well commercially, and probably make anime seem much more appealing to average American audiences.

Crispin isn’t nearly as bad as any of the other characters, but he definitely gives off that “nice guy” attitude. Like he believes that the girls would repay him with something after he is nice to them or sends them a dick pic. Plus I also remember him being in the girls bathroom for some reason, and considering this game it probably wasn’t for something good.
Even though class of 09 is a total kickass game it’s honestly kinda sad, all the routes where Nicole tries to be nice, honest, or defend herself in a way that doesn’t hurt anybody the ending is always bad.

as someone who graduated in 2021 this is literally the most accurate representation of my time in school. had multiple self forever sleeps every year, like 10% of the girls got pregnant, everyone smoked weed before school and we had multiple kids including 2 of my close friends od on opioids and one my friend Adrian died at the school, we had a school shooting, and 2 of my teachers turned out to be dating students and one of them self forever slept in a field after his house got raided.
