"Because you were home" is perhaps the most chilling line spoken in ANY Horror film I can think of. And the half-assed way it was delivered too. Like commenting upon the weather.

Immediately after I watched this movie for the first time, I double checked every window and door was locked. Such a creepy movie. I agree with Zuff. The strangers were able to do what they did because of how secluded the house was. Which is why I would never go to such a secluded place and why I hate large houses and windows without blinds or curtains.
Yeah it was inspired by a killing that happened in the directors hometown !!! Home invasions is my number one fear so this definitely spooked me when I heard it was based on true vents 😣

It’s based on that as well as a local break in when writer was young and the Keddie Cabin Murders that happened in the early 80’s. If you like true crime and haven’t read about The Keddie Cabin Murders you definitely should!

it’s also based on something that happened to the director when he was younger where someone knocked on his family’s door asking if someone who didn’t live there was home. when they said no they left and that was that. later it was revealed that houses got broken into that night and stolen from by the same people. so anyone who didn’t answer, they broke in and robbed them.
I think the reason this is one of the scariest horror movies is because it can really happen to you. People breaking into your home and attacking you, psycho people.

This IS based on a true crime story and the scary part is that the people who did it wasn't caught(at least that I can remember. Been awhile since watching a YT video on it. I think from That Chapter, SKD, or EWU) since it was a random killing of a couple at home and they had masks on so they couldn't be identified by the 1 lucky survivor. Only thing they knew was they were about teen to young adult ages I think there have been a couple stories like this that it was based on and in one case they did catch 3-4 teens/young adults(couple girls and a guy) who just wanted to know what it felt like to terrorize and kill a family/couple and that there WAS 2 boys that talked to the killers as they calmly left the scene in their truck before finding the bodies and the boys gave the police their descriptions so they could make sketches that helped find them. It might be the same one I'm thinking of above but I can't remember exactly since I watch/listen to so many true crime stories 😅 You would not believe how many sound the same with almost the exact same motives and crime. This world is messed up with some very messed up people (Sorry for any mistakes in Grammer/spelling! I'm autistic and dyslexic 🥲)

Even how they strangers go about the whole night is terrifying and feels real. I also have always thought it was so eerie that they don’t kill them at night but the morning. Usually in horror films once the sun comes up the horror is over but not in this movie!

Ah, "The Strangers." A half-hour of brilliant filmmaking followed by a drab, sadistic, pointless ordeal. The ending left me enraged...not at the situation, but at the script that wasted such a promising setup.
This is why most horror films are set in America because if this happened in Britain we wouldn’t be so polite. If somebody comes knocking at our door at that time you better have a bloody good reason too! We would call up all our aunties, uncles, cousins and breadrins who would all roll up with bats and knuckle dusters then enjoy a nice cuppa tea and a biccy whilst standing over your corpse 😂

From what I know In the beginning the narrator introduces Kristen McKay and James Hoyt as two individuals who really existed, but there is no trace of victims with those names in real life. Kristen McKay and James Hoyt are not real, but the murder stories that inspired the movie are. I do not suggest the sequel. It's horrible. Every stupid trope ever. It's annoying.
BTW: The young lady in this film is played by actress Liv Tyler. She is the Daughter of lead singer Steven Tyler from Aerosmith. She has starred in a few independent films before starring in major Hollywood studio films. Liv was mostly recognized in Three Lord of the Rings trilogies.

I think this one is really scary still even at home because it is something that could happen…but those who see this for the first time at home dont have any idea what the theater experience was like for this film and just how tense and jumpy the audiences were.

A modern horror film that actually got it right. ...because my passion usually goes to the horror classics, the older horror movies..anywhere from 60s - 80s, not so much the 90s - 2000s. The newer films tend to lack the ingredients that makes a horror movie good and scary. THE STRANGERS did that for me. Based losely on the 1969 Manson/Tate -Labianca murders. The 3 killers in the film ( Sack Head - Dollface- Pin up girl ) are not mother and daughter and father but just 3 friends in a murderous "cult"
I'd have to go with Bryce's costume, great costumes overall. I guessed Robs right away. I dressed up as cyclops while friends of mine dressed as different characters from xmen as well.
Super hard to watch this way. I understand the copyright stuff but reducing the sound on what you are watching as well as making it oval where you can't even read the subtitles. Fight for fair use. You are legally able to use copyrighted material as long as it's transformative. IE: Parody, Comedy, News. Don't let the big corps squeeze your content into dust.
The director based it on what he experienced as a child. His own neighborhood break-ins, the tate muders the manson family did, and the keddie cabin murders. He experienced burglars knocking on his door, asking if someone who didn't live there was home. He wanted to make the movie in the victims perspective and experiences. The possibility of it happening to anyone because they were simply home is terrifying.
The thing about this movie that always bugged me is that with the shotgun there is NO WAY Kristin and James should’ve been the ones to die. The splitting up and then dropping the gun and leaving it laying around with the 3 crazies coming in and out at will…yea no way I would’ve lost in that situation. Especially with my bf there also. This movie is for sure terrifying and like y’all said nightmare fuel but it didn’t have to end that way with the equalizer they had in their hands. 😢

You are legally able to use copyrighted material as long as it's transformative. IE: Parody, Comedy, News. Don't let the big corps squeeze your content into dust.
This is such a good movie.
The director based it on what he experienced as a child. His own neighborhood break-ins, the tate muders the manson family did, and the keddie cabin murders. He experienced burglars knocking on his door, asking if someone who didn't live there was home. He wanted to make the movie in the victims perspective and experiences. The possibility of it happening to anyone because they were simply home is terrifying.
The thing about this movie that always bugged me is that with the shotgun there is NO WAY Kristin and James should’ve been the ones to die. The splitting up and then dropping the gun and leaving it laying around with the 3 crazies coming in and out at will…yea no way I would’ve lost in that situation. Especially with my bf there also. This movie is for sure terrifying and like y’all said nightmare fuel but it didn’t have to end that way with the equalizer they had in their hands. 😢
