- In this video, I take a look at all 4 Versions of Hexen as well as some mods. So I can determine the best way to go about playing this classic video game.

Fun fact: The Saturn version of Hexen was one of the few games that supported the unreleased system link cable.

Unofficially, using the debug menu. And full of sync errors. But yes, I found that really interesting to learn, too.
This brings back so many memories as a kid.
It's so crazy. I rented this game from Blockbuster as a kid for ONE weekend, but I still have fond memories of it. I don't know if I got far or any good, but now that I'm older and got myself GZDoom, I oughta get these mods and actually play through it once and for all.
The best way to play in my opinion is use gz doom. Still has the old graphics but it looks better and you can look up and down.
I was playing with GZ doom as well and had some fun with it
If i had a PC I'd still wanna use an N64 USB controller on this. But figuring out doom mods for hexen or doom, duke nukem and the like was impossible especially since I had a laptop not a PC.
Thank you very much for all your information here. Hexen was my absolute favourite game back when it was released in 1996. While I admire anyone who can play these action/shooter games bareback, I played it frequently using just a God Mode cheat as I'm no good at constantly dying!
With your help and links I've got the game going again which is nothing short of awesome for me. Thanks a Million. I've looked out the old maps I made, the 57 page Walkthrough by Hwei Tech and David Madsen and I'm ready to rock. BTW in case anyone else has the same problem as me, the God Mode Cheat isn't any of those suggested on Steam for the game, it's GOD [same as originally used for Hexen II].

Personally I prefer the ERSGAN texture packs for Heretic and Hexen, but the way you have it modded does look amazing. I really like the increased movement speed and don't remember seeing such a high (or snappier) FPS. Even playing w GZDoom like I usually do. Maybe I just haven't played in a while and my memory is foggy... Still love that dedicated modders are still adding QoL improvements to many old games that are very worthy of some modern additions.

I played the original on PS1 a ton in the day and loved it. For what it’s worth, I tried to play the multiplayer back then with friends on N64 (was stoked to do so)… graphics wise, it was unplayable. Too dark, blurry, etc etc. 🤷🏻♂️These mods look great though, especially the PC ones 🔥

Loved Heretic on DOS and got Hexen 64 when it came out. Played a ton of multiplayer on it until Goldeneye came out. The n64 controls are a bit weird, but the atmosphere and levels are great.
The atmosphere was awesome especially the birds cawing and turning friends into pigs in the Circe level
It looks really good, love FPS from this time, great level design in general

Hexen without Wrath of Cronos mod is a crime. It would be the perfect world if this mod pack worked with WoC.
I tired Cronos mod and had some stability issues with it. But I'm gonna give it another go!
@@jorybgaming940 The "official" version was discontinued a long time ago and some guys took the job from that point on and released a few more updates (but that also stoped not long after, sadly). I played for a bit the last version they released (didn't get to finish the game) and I couldn't notice any major problem while playing it.
@@jhonrock2386 Oh I'm sure it was a install issue on my end. Or it didn't like one of the already installed mods. Ill for sure give it another go!
What does wrath of cronos mod do?
@@ryanwood6006Wrath of Cronos is a mod for the original Hexen game that changes A LOT of things in the gameplay. It adds new enemies and new classes to play with, and each class have its own characteristics, making the differences between them much more deeper and noticeable than in the original game. The mod also adds a RPG system to the game, where the enemies you kill give XP, which in turn, makes you character grow gaining levels. With the level ups, you gain skill points which you can use to buy or upgrade skills. Each class has a specific skill tree and a fixed number of skill slots, which you use to equip skills, making it possible to create several different builds within the same class. On top of gaining XP from killing enemies, you also gain gold, which you use to buy several itens.
Well, there are way more things the mod brings to the table, but roughly speaking, that's the gist of it.
Do you know if this will work on windows 11 with a 13900k? You would think it would but I’ve had issues with some of my older games no working. I loved playing this game on n64
I can't get my game to look like yours... I open the file called "1.PLAY HEXEN HD" and turn on "lights" and "brightmaps" and the game runs and looks ok but the sprites are still old school. I dragged and dropped all the pk3 files from the mods you mentioned into the game folder... Not really sure.
Can you make a tutorial of how to install these pc mods for hexen?

Hi, What are the actual mods that you're using in this video and what settings ? I'm playing the steam version with GZDoom, tried all texture packs you've mentioned, however I'm unable to get to the quality you're showing in the video...

Best console version it’s Sega Saturn version .. because n64 vers have Blur texture and small resolution.
the n64 version has the best soundtrack. if you can put the soundtrack of n64 in this version there would be perfect.

You can play this on Steam Deck but I am struggling to get the mods working for it
N64 graphics clearer than Sega Saturn?! Hah, maybe in some other dimension, altered by nintendo-mario
sewer mushrooms. Playing Hexen on N64 was like having a plastic bag over the monitor. The picture was
just one disgusting blur. No comparison to the crisp sharpness of Sega Saturn. This hardware debacle
plagued a lot of N64 games, sadly including even Doom64 . Not to mention that N64 also had weird color
palette in Hexen, as if it was made for the local daycare center. And music sounded as if someone forgot
to turn off the flanger fx in time (it still does). The only good thing that came out of this overrated cartridge -
are those neat level descriptions. The rest is pure garbage.
Original was dark and gloomy. Remake is so bright. Not scary at all

Agree, it lacks the atmosphere the original had (high resolution and advanced lighting effects do not equal immersion).
