    I was in Thailand staying with my son and I watched the workers build two guest houses behind the main house in their property… they did everything by hand did not have any big equipment…WOW…. I was amazed how hard they worked and they were perfect in everything they did.. real craftsmanship.. it took longer than building in the USA .. but I personally think it was built better and much more efficient… they also had the house blessed by the monks from the North and they were the first guests to stay in the guest houses.. I eventually am going to go back to Thailand for a nice long visit.
    I miss my son and daughter-in-law and my grandson… just like your parents we are getting older and time flies bye… and we miss our children dearly… Good Luck with the building of the cottage, Domo is doing a fantastic job in your absence. Take care and God Bless you and your family ♥️🙏🏼♥️

      Omg, Thai workers are very famous for short cuts, bad concrete workmanship and and and and. If you have seen the only build in Thailand where the craftsmanship was so superior you are very lucky.

    • @donxz2555
      @donxz2555 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Then please tell the workers that built my wife’s house in Pai, the bathroom sink had a 17 degree list on it, the welding was very very poor, the cuts to metal and wood were done by guesswork than use a ruler. I am sure the Thai reasoning when building is ‘well it’s got four walls, what more do you want, straight ones !

    Hi, a friend of ours put the steel roof on their coffee shop and then put the grass/weed fixed over the top. It stopped the rain noise and kept it waterproof and cool. The lower front roof you could put prep it for Solar panels. Thinking of solar, running 12v cables for emergency lighting etc now would be helpful and not expensive.

    Hope your cottage has a raised roof with eaves at 17ft, then you can add an attic of 7ft with the 10 for the ground level space..
    If using steel roof, try Lysaght zincalume sheets cuz they are worth every penny invested..

    • @lifeinruralthailand
      @lifeinruralthailand  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Ron. The walls are 3m and the roof rises an additional 2.4 meters - there will be a second floor loft room. We are going with tiles instead of the metal. Hope you are well brother 🙏😊

    • @remnant888
      @remnant888 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm well, thank you very much..
      Yea, awesome idea.
      If within your budget, have a layer of real 100% solid aluminium sheets, maybe 0.3mm thk (prob. 500baht/kg) on top of the sloping roof rafters. Aluminium keeps the heat away from your loft and acts as a barrier to any leakages..
      Do not install aluminium foils (interplyed with perishable kraft paper or plastic) and avoid carcinogenic fibreglass insulation.
      I see you are using steel hollow section as your roof rafters and also roof battens supporting the tiles. Good choice to minimise use of timber in termites infested grounds... 😊😊

    been wanting to get back and watch this for a while. I'm starting to do this this year with my fiance in Sisaket. I like the design on your house. I've already seen it completed so it'd be cool to see how they did it. I designed my build before sending it off to my builder to finalize the plans. between 80 and 90 square meters inside. I'm really getting psyched. flying out to ubon this weekend to get the the process started.
    I'm going to see what my fiance says when I ask her to be the project manager too LOL... But she's not finished work yet. well I am retired so I guess I'll stick the job on me.
    she can handle the camera if we decide to video.
    looking forward to the rest of the build videos.

    Damo will do an excellent job as Project Manager. The cottage design looks amazing. Neat how the floor is poured last there. Very smart of you both to have lots of sturdy steel for your home. Makes a big difference for storms and durability. Loved the House Blessing and seeing how the ladies prepared the beautiful food arrangements. I like the Spiritual side of the Blessing that was better than just a regular Housewarming like we do here. Otis and the other children are learning so much about the respect and importance of these traditions. The role of parents and elders are so necessary. Very heartwarming to watch your vlog. Thank you. Pray our country goes back to the old values and beliefs. 🙏☮💟

    Very interesting! We are building our home based on the very same design as you which we found on the internet. We modified the back half of the house to makes a bedroom in each back corner and a bathroom in the centre between the two bedrooms. But the front half of the house is kitchen on right side and living room on the left. All the best with your build. Looking forward to seeing your progress.

    I had a feeling Damo would want a bigger "real house" as they call it. When we retired to Thailand in January I wanted to wait a year before starting the house build but of course the wife wasn't having it and we started within a few weeks of being here. We are now about 3/4 done, they are a little bit behind due to labor and supply shortages. Looking forward to watching your progress along with ours, we hope to be done and moved in by the end of September.

    Looks good, can't see the footings but the rest looks great. When working with local builders I think simplicity is the key. I've built 2 houses in Issan, keeping things simple is the way to go. The local builders do very well with straight-forward designs but often struggle when you get too complicated. Keep your roof design as simple as possible, lotsa folks with valleys in the roof end up with leaks. Plumbing can be a problem too, things like vapour traps are often omitted. Using light weight roofing helps too, hard to beat a steel roof in Issan for a bunch of reasons. Anyhow, good luck, really enjoy your content from a proximal neighbor in Sisaket.

    Looks like a great series of building videos. I'm planning to follow along. Are questions allowed? I have a basic one already: I've seen a lot of videos and blog posts with foreigners putting down a deep layer of soil before building a house, and letting it sit for a long period of time, up to a year. Essentially to raise the base of the house at least 1 meter above the original ground level. Is this only needed in areas where there is some risk of flooding? Or only for larger houses? Is your land in an area where it never floods?

    Building your own castle i believe is a number one priority to protect your family the benefits of building in South East Asia in most cases no mortgage is required & actual ownership is a breeze in terms of government taxes I’ve been my own family house in Lao Vang Vieng & the only thing we have to pay is the monthly electric bill we moved approx two months ago & its shear haven crack on fellow your making a very sensible move….!!!
    I’d like to see your roof Terrence in Bali perhaps I’ll be able to draw some inspiration from your build…!!!

    People always say it's a very unforgiving environment - torrential rain, centuries of flooded paddies, baking heat - for buildings, but I don't remember seeing a lot of evidence for subsidence and heave.

      @@marcymarc1975 No, just three summers in Thailand. I was a teacher, so I had long breaks. Glasgow is way worse for subsidence, so far as I can see.

    Something seems off about picture of floor plan. Only one outside door leading into house that opens to a bed room that has no door into rest of house? Am i seeing that wrong?

      There is a front door in from the porch, then a door into the bedroom and the bathroom. There is a side door into an office/grow room 🤣 can’t believe I can say that legally now!
