Yep. These guys are still rockin' after all these years. They formed the band in 1987 and have gone through a few drummers, but Wajima (guitar) and Suzuki (bass) have been there since the beginning. I read a story that claims that, early in their history, Wajima worked in a bookstore and began to explore the classics of Japanese writing (Nigen Isu, which means 'Human Chair' is the title of a short story). Wajima studied Buddhism at university, so the lyrics of their songs frequently explore the human condition. I find it particularly poignant that this song talks about the longing for success as Ningen Isu is just in the last ten years gaining popularity on the worldwide stage.

The song is kind of autobiographic for the band. As you mentioned they played doom metal for more than 30 years, but had so little commercial success that they had to work in regular jobs for a living. Than 10-15 years ago the wave of all-female Japanese metal bands started (the icebreaker was Baby Metal) and Japanese metal music became known and got attention in i.a. the US and Europe. Due to the YT link algorithm to all-female bands like BM, Band Maid, Nemophila and others also Ningen Isu got the interest they deserve outside Japan. After 30 years they toured for the first time outside Japan, namely in Germany and England - meanwhile nearly 60 years old.

Ningen Isu = "Human Chair". Their main influences are Black Sabbath and Kiss. Their characters are an 1800's professor, an undead monk and a 1970's era yakuza gangster. Wazzy (the lead guitar player) plays a Gibson SG, as did Tony iommi from Black Sabbath, the creative genius who invented metal, doom and thrash.
I LOVE how one thinks it is about as heavy as it is going to get then wham! NO - IT GETS HEAVIER!
Older? I say younger... but that is a matter of perspective. My grand daughter introduced me to this group back in '90 or ''91.
These days I think of them as Band-Maid's grandpas.

The monk is Japanese kabuki ghost monk., The guitarist wears the traditional kimono of a mid century "professor" and the drummer is modern yakuza. Or so I heard.... :)
