    We rise again from ashes, from the good we've failed to do. We rise again from ashes, redeemed, O Lord, by you. our penance, lord, our sorrow, our grieving hearts renew, an offering of ashes, an offering to you
    We offer you our failures, we offer you attempts, the gifts not fully given, the dreams not fully dreamt. Our stumblings, give direction, our visions wider view, an offering of ashes, an offering to you
    Then raise us up from ashes, your healing ease our pain. Though spring has turned to winter, and sunshine turned to rain, your rain will nurture growing, and create our world anew an offering of ashes, an offering to you.
    Give thanks to God the Father, who gave us life and breath. Give thanks to Christ our saviour who saved us by his death, who, with the Holy Spirit, creates the world anew from an offering of ashes, an offering to you.

    So beautiful and moving. The new words make more sense to me. God raises us, we cannot raise ourselves. An offering of ashes, makes me think of the Little Flower,all her good deeds are like rags compared to Christ's sacrifice for us.

      I completely agree. The songs were a little unwieldy the first couple of times I sang through it to make this recording, but I will get used to it and I do think they will flow better. God bless you

    Its official: You are now my "Breaking Bread" reference musician. I'm a piano player, but still you always pop up when I look for a song I discover at Mass. A Spanish living in the Netherlands and attending a US military chapel. There you go! You are amazing, congratulations!

    Why do they always change the original lyrics, leave the original alone. That ones the best.

  • @splashpont
    @splashpont 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just compared the two sets of lyrics. The revised lyrics place the focus on God's grace rather than our works.
    In light of the Lutheran-Roman Catholic joint declaration on Justification, while actions matter, they are only enabled by the grace of God. Some might not understand the intent of the original lyrics, particularly those whose personal efforts are to merit heaven (aka Pelagianism). We cooperate with grace (thus, with God) by being the hands and feet of Christ in the world, for faith without works is dead.
    As proclaimed at the Eucharist: "Rend your hearts and not your clothing" (Ash Wednesday), and again, "Is this not the fast I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free..." (Friday after Ash Wednesday).

    Hello, Chris! This Ash Wednesday we decided with my choir that we sing this and should we make the lyrics as the revised one? I'll wait for your answer, God Bless!

    • @ChrisBrunelle
      @ChrisBrunelle  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi! So these new lyrics appear in the 2021 OCP Breaking Bread and music issue products. So if you have those in your pews, and if you have parishioners in your pews, you would probably want to use the new lyrics otherwise it won’t match what they’re looking at. The text was revised to be a little more theologically accurate, although I can’t tell you specifically what lines were the issue. I would just try to match what you’re singing with what the congregation might be looking at. God bless

    why the revisions?

  • @ram010992
    @ram010992 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not that the original lyrics always made sense, but I feel like there is some awkward phrasing in the revision that will definitely take some getting used to. (I know some people hated "stumblings" being stretched into three syllables, but that was one of my favorite lines. They didn't even change the words there, just the order of the words to eliminate "stum-bl-ings." haha) Looking at the music on OneLicense, I wonder if Tom Conry was involved in the revision. The way they put "Tom Conry, alt" in the copyright line suggests to me that he was not. I'm not sure if he's still in the liturgical music world, but just an interesting thing I noticed when looking at the music.

      I love the original as it was. That's how I will always sing it.

    • @ChrisBrunelle

      Tom isn't involved in liturgical music anymore....hasn't been for sometime. He does still live and work (as a teacher) here in Portland, but I tend to agree with you that he wasn't involved in the revision. I think the last piece of his that was published by OCP could be 25 years ago now

  • @Terry-te1ij
    @Terry-te1ij ปีที่แล้ว

    Words have meaning, and the words here are not correct theologically as a Christian. "We" don't create ourselves anew.

    • @ChrisBrunelle
      @ChrisBrunelle  ปีที่แล้ว

      I just make the videos, I don't analyze them for theological correctness. The composer has a Master of Divinity degree from Harvard U and is still around the Portland area. I wonder if he's changed his thoughts on this
