    Hi Jaison, Love watching your clips.
    My mother and her family all grew up in Huapei. I have been living in Melbourne for he last 30 years and most years come out for the kumeu show and eat as many Albany Surprise grapes as i can. I imported some canes into Australia and they give me about 200 bunches in Jan/Feb each year and then i come out to NZ and have some more, because of the slighly different seasons. Pests are a major concern here as the possums & mice love them. I have completly enclosed the vines now though and don't lose to many. The sun cooks a few so i have to put up shade on 35 plus degree days. It is very rewarding and every year i look forward to prunning and then bud burst in the first week in September. Then all the thinning & more prunning until foraging starts in early January. I eat one grape off each bunch first and then the next and the next and then in Feb the ripening speeds up and then i have to eat more and start giving some away. Keep up the good work. Cheers Gary

    Finally....FINALLY a clear, simple explanation.
    I'm attempting back yard grapevine this year on overhead trellis/arbor.
    From a T post 4m towards the house.
    I thought cane pruning was better but I got that wrong.
    Thanks for the video which corrected my planning.

    I suppose it depends if you are a purist or not. Also a bit on the variety. I have been doing some trials this season on shoot thinning, pulling out any of the shoots that are crowding each other. So I think that might answer the question, if you have less buds and those left are at the right spacing then you have less shoot thinning to do and therefore less leaf removal from around the fruiting zone. Have you looked at my vid on how to take grapevine cutting, same channel. All the best Jaison

    Jaison' i'm swapping from spur to cane pruning this season ( now ) just a little vineyard with chambourcin , pin/ n, cab/sab, syrah, merlot, and some chard , some vines are new as i had a hell of a job trying to field graft over to he variety I wanted, the R/S was R/G
    The chambourcin grows on it's own roots and is proving to be very disease resistant, most of that is 9 years old , I cut off the spur cordons in the winter just gone ' most have a cane that I kept lower down on the trunk . have you a video on how to start off a fresh with the cane pruning system ... robbie

    • @jaisonk1
      @jaisonk1  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not specifically. If you have left some canes then lay these down as per normal cane pruning. It can be a big job and may take a couple of seasons to get it right. The main problem is working the head to get ot lower for the canes to throw from. You just have to persevere. Good luck.

  • @saro4761
    @saro4761 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Jaison, Thanks for the great video. But how the vine is gonna produce any crop if you cut all the one-year-old canes to 2 buds? As far as I know the grapes come out from the buds 4 up. How this spur pruning does not decrease the yield? What I have been though is to keep a 2-bud cane (closer to cordon) for sustaining the growth for the next year's branching and a 5-6-bud cane (away from the cordon) for sustaining the fruit production. Thanks

    Thank you for wonderful video. I have a question. I have 2 years old table grape plant. I never pruned yet (never knew I should) but still got nice amount of delicious black grape for dessert. Why did you pruned this plant 2 different ways? Which one should I use considering that my plant lays on a fence?
    Another thing, maybe because my plant is 2.5 years old, it didn't grow a thick vine on a bottom. It looks like 2 thin vines. Should I prune in December till the very bottom?
    thank you.

  • @jaisonk1
    @jaisonk1  13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It may take you a couple of years to get them where you want. Train the leaders along what supports you have. During the winter you can trim excess leaders back to 2 buds from the main leader. from these buds new leaders with grow, and you can continue training these. The fruit comes on the new years growth. With new plants it takes a few years before they fruit. Be patient it will happen. In the meantime you can set up the skeleton of the plant. If useful give a thumbs up please Regards Jaison

    Depends on the length of the cordon. In the video I leave about 5 to 6 spurs with two buds each on each side of the cenrtal trunk. If you are training for eating grapes or across a pergola you could leave more. All the best Jaison

  • @DKen2k
    @DKen2k 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    if you cut too close to the 2nd bud like you did, you kill the bud off. you're supposed to cut well above the bud you want to keep, close to the 3rd bud in this case.

    • @jaisonk1
      @jaisonk1  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +DKenUCLA In my experience I have found that if you cut to far away from the 2nd bud, closer to the 3rd bud as you say, I get dieback and rot. Cutting just above the bud keeps the focus on the bud and keeps it healthy

    Hi folks, the best time to prune is the middle of winter when the vines are dormant and all the leaves have fallen. If you go to my channel jaisonk1, I have just put up a couple of new pruning videos. Also if you look in the description above you will see a link to a review I have done on an ebook called The Complete Grape Growing System. at the end it will take you to the authors page and a bit more explanation, you may find this useful.

    Once you have the framework of your vine grown to where you want it, then you can stop the cordon. Then during the winter prune the cordon and leave some spurs as in my video. These spurs will produce the new wood that the fruit will come on. Send me some pictures. jaison@kerrfarmwine.co.nz

    Well after a bit of thinking I cannot understand how the vineyard wine grape grower cane pruning produces better grapes than the spur pruning as in this video , and here is why , the cane that was layed down on the wire Is exactly the same age as the spur pruned cane buds that produce this years canes that fruit exactly the same as the cane prune one that was layed down , so both sides grow exactly the same canes with fruit regardless , the only thing I can think of is it’s just a preferd style of pruning .
