I have really wanted to learn reading and writing in the elvish language and had no idea there were so many versions of the Tengwar language and this video is so helpful and insightful. Great video and well done!
JimmyJenord Really? as far as I've herd and from what you can read he took very little from his time in ww1. From what I've read Tolkien mainly was fascinated with myths and language. He wanted to create a unifying western mythos right? He was a staunch nationalist and a bit of a racist and the story rings more of a glorious war against the bad forren people than some kind of retelling of the horrors and pointlessness the soldiers of ww1 (late war not early) felt. Allot of drugs always helped too, they helped all the writers of the time.
I'm actually with you on what you're saying. I think you misunderstood me a little, I wasn't saying that he drew from his experiences in the war and put them into this fictional world, but rather that he escaped from the monster of a war entirely, by making his own fantasy world. Like I said, his own world, not a world that represents or is a metaphor of sorts for his experience in the trenches. I didn't know he was a bit of a racist, that's interesting.. I wouldn't of guessed it, seeing as a big theme throughout his stories is the coming together of different peoples to defeat a common enemy. Race conflict is definitely something we see a lot, but that's nearly always sort of subjective as to who's in the wrong.
JimmyJenord It's the coming together of a bunch of heroic middle English white people to fight a bunch of strange industrial people from the east who ally with weird elephant riding people from the desert and odd eastern people who fall into chaos as soon as they see no more gain in the invasion. No undertones there?
Daniel Keely It's here and there though, many people from the east where not painted as being evil, many lived in harmony with the western folk, take into account Faramir's line in the two towers.. 'You wonder what lies he was told to leave home, what he left behind and if he really was evil at heart', this shows Tolkien's understanding of people being manipulated into fighting on the side of evil, as oppose to inherintly being evil. The burning of the westfold was due to western savages also, which proves that evil came from within the west as well as outside of it. Tolkien was from the wester world, it makes sense that most of the heroes from his world are western.
I've been writing general use for English or at least the version we came up with, since about 1973...THANK YOU for this lesson as it certainly has cleared up many glitches caused by learning it as 14 and 15-year-old dweebs playing Advanced Dungeons and Dragons then sending letters during college! (hahaha) My only complaint is when you read the ring inscription out loud in the black tongue you didn't sound anywhere near evil enough! (again...hahaha) In a couple months I'll be 60 years old and I / We STILL use this enough not to get rusty. I also use it on art projects and the likes. So once again. Thank you for your dedication and generosity in sharing your knowledge.
Thank you for this course ! Makes me wish for a tengwar transcription of the names of units with a sindarin /quenya name in their unit description in DaC sooo much :')
I've listened to all of the 'lore of Middle-Earth...' series you've put together and just wanted to thank you for your work. They have been very informative.
Hey Arachîr I have an Idea for a different Kind of lore video. What about you make a video telling us all the "alternativ" history you have in Dac (like Agandaur or Angmar as a whole and Khand and your thoughts behind it...)? It would be cool to hear your stories about how the different "made up" factions Were made! Love your content keep it up:)
A bit late to comment, but in regards to the 2 different R symbols, they are really useful in my language since the R can be a vowel like Y can be a vowel in English :)
+Arachir Galudithon Ai na vedui Arachier!! Mae Govannon!! Yea mellon,I bear no gifts lord, yet instead I thank you for ALL of your time and work (as I know the amount of deep study it takes to convey these comments,to others.) you have given without asking of anything in return. Indeed lord,it is a thing of devotion ,and a rare talent!!! So Gil-galad is direct descended of the Noldor (gnomes) Fingon. Where ,I see that on the Noldorin descent,I see no wife in any written works that I own(and I have many many Tolkienbooks ,authers being J.R.R ,Christopher and so many other Guides to the people places and all Middle -Earth ,written by Artists and works of Alan Lee, Ted Nasmith, etc. I waned to thank you in particular in the video of "The Fall of Gondolin". For, Turgon ,in my opinion deserved much more attention than he ever got on the written page. As you,I always favored Glorfindel, Turin Turimbar and Fingolfin. Fingolfin was a huge Noldorin elf,and had the only one to challenge Morgoth to single combat(as you well know). His Sword Ringil "glittered like ice" as he struck Morgoth 7 times until Morgoth finally bent low with his shield to crush him,and thrice Fingolfin stood back tall, and ever after Morgoth was forever to walk "halt of one foot for the rest of his days". That is what made Fingolfin my favorite character of all.And of course the love all of the Noldor had for him,as he led them thru the Helcaraxe, after Feanor`s betrayal of the burning of the ships at the Grey Havens. I have begun to re-read the Silmarillion, for the 20th time, lol and am trying to get my elvish toungue to work again!!! I have YOU to thank for this,as your video`s are so very well done and are great to watch and bask in the brilliance of my favorite author ever, Professor J.R.R Tolkien. Happy New Year Arachir, and may the west wind be always on your shoulder, and the Sun on your face.
I just read The Hobbit again, and i have an open question. In retrospective isnt it kinda odd that without the One Ring the Journey wouldnt be succesful? I mean i know its designed as a book for children but later on it always seems that the ring couldnt be used for the good side in anyway. And did the Lords of Dol Amroth consider themselves as Dunadan?
Great video, although parts of Namarië kinda gave me pain, since those final "i" sounds ought to be short, not the long, dipthongized "eye" we use so often in English. Still great, though.
Thank you for these videos, i look forward to when they come out :) was wondering if i could ask you quickly if you have a translation for "princess" in the angerthas runes? (although i'm not sure how it'd be possible to convey it to me if you were inclined to tell me). i know i could spell it just letter for letter in english but i'd prefer to have it in khuzdul for authenticity's sake :) am i right in thinking that it would be phonetic? for example if it was in english, the "c" in the middle would use an "s" rune and there would only be a single "s" run at the end? i have more questions but i shall exercise the google-fu for those (and likely come back asking more heh) thank you for your time!
Pretty much, yes. These scripts by and large are intended to be used phonetically, where it would be based more on the sounds that the letters used to transcribe them.
22:28 no, it says LDL. The line above the D represents the N before the D
6 ปีที่แล้ว +1
The line above the D in the *bottom* example represents the N but in the top example, there is no such line. The middle symbol is called 'ando' and is used as a nasal D. To better help the lay person, I expressed it as LNDL rather than explain the effect ando has on the pronunciation of D.
Maybe some day I'll actually try. I know English and Spanish (roughly), English of course being my main language, so "learning" a language that's so different from English is basically going into 7th Grade Cyrillic Class, which if you didn't get the point, it's really damn hard!
What a nice video. I should definitely have my signature in Tengwar, what a wonderful idea! ^^ A question though: why does the word 'free' get two e's if it is pronounced like "i:"? Shouldn't it get the symbol of a long i rather than a double e? And in the word "should" there is no L in pronunciation, so why is there a letter for it in the transcription? It looks to me as if that phrase of the Human Rights bill is transcribed based on the letters used rather than phonetically, or am I wrong in this?

Well as I say, you can either write it purely letter for letter or purely phonemically. This example is letter for letter. That latter version is preferred but neither is wrong or right.
One criticism: The black speech of the ring verse in latin misses some symbols. I'll just give you the version I know (also the version on the wiki): Ash nazg durbatulûk, ash nazg gimbatul, ash nazg thrakatulûk agh burzum-ishi krimpatul.
I like the theory that Tolkien created Arda as a world for the languages. I gather that one way languages originally formed was taken from star constellations. English goes back to paleo Hebrew via both runes and alphabet, this I suspect is why Arda has both kinds. Also symbols of alphabets combine, so Hebrew characters are all made of markings from the star of David. How Tolkien writes his JRRT symbol overlaid alludes to this. I feel your thoughts on this would be very insightful?
Nah, this video is too technical, i have waited too long for a video of yours but this isn't what I enjoy of your channel, but I understand that other people can think otherwise. Greetings from the southern hemisphere.
Certainly sir. If you have a discord account we can private message there in real time? The link can be found by searching on steam for a group called 'The Brotherhood of the Swan' then in the description of that group you will find the discord link. :)
This guy is extremely underrated, he deserves a lot more for his efforts.
Thank you very much for all the time and effort you put into these, they are great to listen to while I work on my modding projects ;)
Hear hear!
Wow, did not know you tuned in to Arachîr Galudirithon, what a small world!
Rebelzize! great to see you here! :D
It truly is a small world
Im a simple man ;)
You are truly brilliant sir
Galu, your work is slowly becoming a drug for me...
Well I am glad to have you along! :)

I just discovered your channel yesterday and I've been binge watching your videos. I love them
Rumil's script is called Sarati. It's written top to bottom & left to right 🙂
Love these videos and really pushed me to start reading the books and I'm a big fan of you and DaC and of course LOTR

What ever was going on inside Tolkien's mind when he was creating this is just amazing
In the earliest days of Tolkien's world he was retreating from the harsh reality of the trenches, and into his own fantastical world

I've listened to all of the 'lore of Middle-Earth...' series you've put together and just wanted to thank you for your work. They have been very informative.
Very glad you made this video Galu!! thanks an awful lot!! :) Really enjoyable!!

I second that. That sounds like a great idea.
I agree.
Johan Auken Alstrup i Must agree
Writing in sounds is so much better than in letters
Hey! These videos are quite good, have you considered making them into podcasts on iTunes?
Awesome! :D I've shared this on my pages aswell! Keep going!
Ah thank you very much. :d
If you need anything. Let me know man! :) :D
These videos taste nice in my ears...
A bit late to comment, but in regards to the 2 different R symbols, they are really useful in my language since the R can be a vowel like Y can be a vowel in English :)
Of course now we'll need a video on how to transcribe Sindarin in English. Or at least a brief introduction.

I like the greeting, 'mae-govannen' (well met?) mellon (friend) what is the last bit?
Thank you as always.
Great stuff as always!
Nice, love your lore Videos.
Great video! What is the meaning of those 4 dots after 'brotherhood'? Is it like an end of line symbol?
It is an end of paragraph symbol. It isn't really needed but if you want a bit of flare you can use it.
Great vid!!!
I didn't understand much but i really love your lore videos, make more please :)
It's amazing how much you know about Tolkien's universe. Can you please tell me what the greeting at the beginning means?? Thank you kindly.
Not sure on spelling but it's some kind of elvish, mae govanen (like well met) mellonin (friends like Mellon from the book) ☺
I must ask, do you have any recommended sources for learning Quenya or Sindarin? How did you learn it yourself?
As a language nerd, this video is amazing. How would you recommend learning Tengwar?
Arachîr, may I suggest you (If the time is sufficient) make the planned video on Fëanor about the Children of Finwë?
New lore video!!!!! Just as I am halfway through Children of Húrin.
So it is three versions for writing Quenya, Sindarin and westrohn?
Interesting. Is there a separate book on this?
I realise that this may be too broad a topic, but have you considered making a series on Sindarin? I'd really find that useful.
Great video, although parts of Namarië kinda gave me pain, since those final "i" sounds ought to be short, not the long, dipthongized "eye" we use so often in English. Still great, though.

This one was a bit niche. :P
