Excellent finale in my opinion. Two very worthy combatants, but in the end, inspite of my love for Carbide, Apollo won fair and square, and the machine certainly earned its place as Robot Wars champion 2016. Here's to 2017! :D
So great to have Robot Wars back! My other half and I are just about to celebrate 10 years together and I spent a lot of that showing her classic Robot Wars battles. When it came back, she became an even bigger fan than I am!
I would be really surprised if they didn't bring it back for a second series, although technically this latest series is the 8th series of the show, and the next one if they do another one will be the 9th series :D

I know, as a Thor fan is was crushing to see them get so utterly battered. But I guess it stands as a testament to its durability and power. Apollo fully deserved their win and I'm looking forward to their return in the next series.
What I loved about Apollo's team is that they cared for the audience and would make it more entertaining for them by doing something unexpected like flipping all the house robots over XD They weren't too serious about the competition and wanted themselves and the audience to have a good time :)
The grand final between Carbide and Apollo reminds me of Chaos 2 and Hypnodisc in series 3, only this one was much more intense and went the distance. An epic end for an epic show brought back. Here's hoping for another season.
Ode to that. I think it was more like Gravity vs Fluffy but the Series 3 parallels are definitely there. Speaking of Carbide, it reminds me of Hypno disc in series 4, who everyone thought was going to WALK it to the title before Pussycat knocked them out, except this time is was with TR2 and Apollo,
Flipped over 3 of the 4 house robots with ease, the only robot to KO Storm 2 and TR2 on television and legitimately outlasted Carbide in the final - Apollo are deserving champions.
They didn't out class carbide. They couldn't get the KO (like Carbide did to them) and they only won because their weapon motor was damaged when fighting TR2. If their weapon was working there wouldn't have been anything left of Apollo.
But it wasn't working, because Apollo battered them. The spinner is actually Carbide's biggest weakness as well as it's strength. The reason most people's tactic against Carbide is to ram it against the side wall is to break the gearbox that controls the spinner. Apollo, with their opening flurry of flips and bashes, smashed it. You can even see smoke coming from Carbide when it breaks. It wasn't TR2 that broke Carbide, it was Apollo.
+Bob Boblington it broke in the battle with TR2. After the fight they opened it up and the clutch plates were gone as well as some other damage. It's like saying Apollo did all the damage to Thor because they were the last ones to hit it, no, it was carbide.
Are you aware that they get a couple of hours between fights to repair all that? Carbide are a professional team, they have spare clutch plates, he was even carrying them when he showed the damage from TR2.
+Bob Boblington they get no more than an hour or so usually. and I never said they didn't fix the clutch plates but they certainly didn't change the weapon motor which has been damage before in the heats. All those big hits stack up and it just so happened it broke against Apollo.
According to The Mirror, 2.4 million watched the final - a new high for the series and higher ratings than last three episodes of the latest series of Top Gear! And more viewers than Extreme 2 as well!
The thing i loved most about this series was the mini heats they set up because it means if you have an AMAZING robot that looks like it can go far that has a bit of bad luck or a malfunction and breaks down, it can be repaired and sent out again for another go whereas in the last Series' if a robot had a bit of bad luck it was out. Done. Finished. Even if it looked like it would be amazing.
There was good sportsmanship in the Carbide - Thor fight. "Are you dead there?" "Yeah I've got no drive" so Carbide stop attacking. Meanwhile Aftershock in the current series just go in to destroy everyone so they can't finish the competition.
Spinners are powerful weapons, but at times too powerful for their own good. There were multiple times in the original series when robots like Fluffy and Hypnodisc would knock themselves out. The destructive potential is highest with the spinners, but not just to their opponents as proven again with this series.
Ha! What? Those two bots are among my all time favourites. But think Carbide is better since it has more destructive power than Hypo-disc and the speed and efficiency of Chaos 2.
Lol, Apollo should've kept going around the pit with how Carbide nearly drove into the pit. Apollo could then suddenly turn around and then perhaps the Carbide driver may get spooked and steer in the wrong direction and instead into the pit.
In fairness, they only outlasted Carbide because Carbides weapon was damaged in a previous fight and the repair didn't hold out. If they had that weapon going for the full fight the Apollo would have been ripped to shreds.

For me, the problem with this series format was that half the robots get knocked out after a single melee battle and you never see them again. Then you saw the remaining robots loads of times, including repeat battles of the same two robots. I think every robot deserves at least two battles just to repay the effort of the builders, and if anything the melee should be at the end. I mean, we had the classic robot Razor, it didn't work properly in its first battle, and that was it. Never to be seen again!
Its a good point, however for S1 the obvious counter would be that most of the robots going out in R1 are robots you dont really want to see more than once. Either because they simply dont work, or just arnt very effective - of course it makes the other half work like horses but on balance i think its better overall.
You have to be joking? Out of date designs and materials would not last in today's modern fighting world! Notice how a lot of the older robots were beaten early on in the heats?
Brilliant return for Robot Wars and an awesome Grand Final with back-and-forth adrenaline-fueled action from great machines. And in the end it went to Apollo who really deserved that one, and are now up there with Roadblock, Panic Attack, Chaos 2 and Razer as well-deserving UK Champions. Thank God that for the first time since the 5th Wars, there were no underhanded tactics, flawed rules that were exploitable or political conspiracies involved (which is why I didn't include Tornado or Typhoon 2 in my previous sentence). It's shocking that Razer fell out in the first round the way it did, but to be honest, this entire series felt like one of those franchise reboots that focuses mainly on the new rising stars as the torch is passed to them whilst paying some respect to the old veterans, considering that none of the Heat winners were in any of the previous wars.
No! that would create a vortex that would consume space and time as we know it! And don't go giving Ray Billings any ideas for what he can do with Tombstone and Last Rites, either.
+Lewis Castor there were only 2 flipper bots in the grand final (out of six) and in the whole series there were only 4 flippers over all out of 40 (if I remember correctly)
even, the american people (USA, mexico, canada, bla bla bla Tacos are better :v) things that the rules of battlebots are stupid (you only need to see the fights of "Sawblaze vs Razorback" and Chomp versus Disco Inferno to know the stupid rules of ABC Battlebots) but in robots ok i prefer Battlebots, but the feels on robotwars are amazing, ok carbide will be humillating in battlebots, but in robot wars, no matter what happens all feels great, i love when the people screams "ACTIVATE!" or when that man says "SIX" that is just a feeling that battlebots cant never had
I've been watching a heck of a lot of old robot wars at work when charles was the host, what happened to robot wars nowadays? what happened to throwing robots over the walls? and no music?
Robot Wars began in 1998. Should the 2017 series of the reboot be successful as the previous one and it saw a third series in 2018, then there is a chance that Robot Wars' 20th anniversary will be celebrated on TV.

Spectrum UK the robots are a lot better than they used to be thanks to the advances in motor, battery and wireless technology, allowing more power to be generated with less weight involved, giving more weight allowance for more robust construction methods and tougher armour. they are faster, more controlled, they hit harder, and can usually withstand a lot more punishment. granted, there wasn't really much innovation in terms of new types of weaponry in this series, just improvements or reinterpretations of tried and tested conventional weaponry because it's still effective.
Let's see if the shock team can get their revenge on Carbide this year.. assuming they go through... I'm a little annoyed that the top two robots have been put into the same heat for 2017...
It was to create better TV. There was no guarantee that Carbide or Apollo would get to the finale and we all wanted to see a rematch between the two of them so to make sure that happends they put them in the same episode.
Valid point... and to be fair... they can both still make it... If they make the heat final... and the judges choose the losing robot as a wildcard. So maybe it's not so bad...

Lucky for Apollo. I think that's why Carbide hit them a couple of times more than necessary because it wasn't fair that Apollo avoided damage and Thor didn't because their safety link stayed in. Basically, it was like Thor was being punished because it had a good safety link design. Zombie Thor to come back next season and literally kill the competition.
Apollo is a machine with huge potential, despite it's overall stats being ok. Really needed a good driver to fully bring out the potential of this machine, and thats what made apollo win this year.
Agreed. That kind of design is very popular in BattleBots, but the danger with that design is always the robot shaking itself to pieces. That's why I think flywheel spinners tend to do much better than bar spinners
Ardin Anester Drum spinners (such as Pulsar) could be another good factor, since the ones I've seen tend to spin vertically as opposed to horizontally. But durability is still going to be an issue with any spinner bot
Dear BBC for the next series can you not show a fight from the final in the trailers. It kinda ruins the show. All you need to do is see the robots in each heat on the website, watch the trailer then its not a massive stretch to notice that they are all from separate heats. It's even more obvious than in the later series of the original run where clips that clearly gave away the results of fights were included at the beginning of each show. Come on guys!!!
Whilst that is the case, other fights where shown like Behemoth and Gabriel which the fans rushed to shout out as "OMG Spoiler, Behemoth is the wildcard and Gabriel wins its heat" - that didnt happen. Thus unless your going through frame by frame, you dont know whats a spoiler and what isnt.
Good point. Other than the Gabriel Behemoth fight in the opening titles everything else was taken directly from the broadcast though. I don't know I just think its a little disappointing when things are given away. A lot of decisive moments in battles were in the clips which ruined it a bit as well. Lets be honest, we all knew Draven wasn't going to win after that hit from MR speed squared.
Tombstone is not infallible, and there are lots of very tough machines in Robot Wars that have been designed to deflect or absorb the impact from that type of weaponry. I think there are lots of robots in Robot Wars that would put up a good fight against Tombstone, and probably some very unexpected results too :P I think people overestimate the difference in strength and power between Robot Wars and Battlebots, tbh.
Battlebots maybe good with 1 v 1 knockout tournaments but put them in a group stage Melee and it would turn out alot different. UK robots use alot of Armox and Hardox and Last Rites Couldn't even damage Foxic in Robo Challenge
tab hero it looks more like Fluffy, but they do have similar weapons and I believe Ray Billings gave them some tips to get the weapon to be more efficient.
hi there is a video that has been uploaded by zucchini called apollo tribute #2, that shows team apollos robot, apollo, being the cause of 9/11 which i and others find very offensive to team apollo and the unfortunate victims of 9/11. plus i belive that it has not been given permission by you the bbc to use the footage shown in the video. youtube has adviced me to inform the licence holders of the original footage, in oder to get it removed
Carbide's weapon was broken for the majority of the match, and because Apollo learned to keep their backside away from the spinner, when the weapon did break it meant that Apollo were in complete control.

i had no idea this show is still running! really entertaining.
It ended in 2002 or around about that time but had a reboot in 2016 this is the first series of the reboot.

The safety cut off switch got knocked off so it was just a very lucky/unlucky hit.
Lucky for Apollo. I think that's why Carbide hit them a couple of times more than necessary because it wasn't fair that Apollo avoided damage and Thor didn't because their safety link stayed in. Basically, it was like Thor was being punished because it had a good safety link design.

It was obvious by the last fight it would have been Apollo, they were clearly the better team. They destroyed.
Apollo is a machine with huge potential, despite it's overall stats being ok. Really needed a good driver to fully bring out the potential of this machine, and thats what made apollo win this year.

Agreed. That kind of design is very popular in BattleBots, but the danger with that design is always the robot shaking itself to pieces. That's why I think flywheel spinners tend to do much better than bar spinners

Ardin Anester Drum spinners (such as Pulsar) could be another good factor, since the ones I've seen tend to spin vertically as opposed to horizontally. But durability is still going to be an issue with any spinner bot
Carbide's team actually entered Battlebots this year with the very similar Cobalt, but yes, Tombstone was probably an inspiration.
This is why I love both series. Still, Robot wars should be more international after this or there should be a world cup.

Dear BBC for the next series can you not show a fight from the final in the trailers. It kinda ruins the show. All you need to do is see the robots in each heat on the website, watch the trailer then its not a massive stretch to notice that they are all from separate heats. It's even more obvious than in the later series of the original run where clips that clearly gave away the results of fights were included at the beginning of each show. Come on guys!!!
Whilst that is the case, other fights where shown like Behemoth and Gabriel which the fans rushed to shout out as "OMG Spoiler, Behemoth is the wildcard and Gabriel wins its heat" - that didnt happen.
Thus unless your going through frame by frame, you dont know whats a spoiler and what isnt.
Good point. Other than the Gabriel Behemoth fight in the opening titles everything else was taken directly from the broadcast though. I don't know I just think its a little disappointing when things are given away. A lot of decisive moments in battles were in the clips which ruined it a bit as well. Lets be honest, we all knew Draven wasn't going to win after that hit from MR speed squared.

Tombstone is not infallible, and there are lots of very tough machines in Robot Wars that have been designed to deflect or absorb the impact from that type of weaponry. I think there are lots of robots in Robot Wars that would put up a good fight against Tombstone, and probably some very unexpected results too :P
I think people overestimate the difference in strength and power between Robot Wars and Battlebots, tbh.
Battlebots maybe good with 1 v 1 knockout tournaments but put them in a group stage Melee and it would turn out alot different.
UK robots use alot of Armox and Hardox and Last Rites Couldn't even damage Foxic in Robo Challenge

hi there is a video that has been uploaded by zucchini called apollo tribute #2, that shows team apollos robot, apollo, being the cause of 9/11 which i and others find very offensive to team apollo and the unfortunate victims of 9/11. plus i belive that it has not been given permission by you the bbc to use the footage shown in the video. youtube has adviced me to inform the licence holders of the original footage, in oder to get it removed

Carbide's weapon was broken for the majority of the match, and because Apollo learned to keep their backside away from the spinner, when the weapon did break it meant that Apollo were in complete control.
Apollo broke Carbide's weapon :P Surely that counts for something.
