I am 74. 500,000 young men took jets to go to Viet Nam. Over 50,000 died. This song was overwhelming at the time.
It was taken by most of the world as a Vietnam War song, but he wrote it autobiographically simply as a (not yet superstar) musician going on the road time and again.
Yeah, and a few hundred thousand Vietnamese, including raped women and children, died as a result too. And what had Vietnam done to America to deserve this? NOT ONE GODDAMED THING! And YOU are worried about clowns who CHOSE to go over there and kill.
@@user-gt2uf8cq9ythe beauty of music is it can mean so many different things to different people.
Never apologize for having an emotional reaction to music. 💔
John wrote this song and as he used to say “this is how it all started for me “
John d sang this with mama cass u should check it out❤❤
YES! Please check it out.
Wonderful song and reaction, guys. You brought a tear to my eyes. The song is sung from the perspective of a Vietnam era soldier going off to war and is very heartfelt.
I truly enjoy watching the two of you interact and the love you have for one another. I was married for nine years, but my marriage was a living hell and I was scarred for life, so to see a loving, successful marriage between the two of you warms my heart. Cherish and support each other with all your heart, and love each other unconditionally. What you have is special. ❤
God I wish John Denver was still with us today.
He'd be 81 this year and pretty much be retired from singing anyway.
You need to hear, arguably his most beautiful and emotional song.......MY SWEET LADY. It will melt your heart!
My wife is Russian, we first met in West Africa, then lost touch for eight years. She found me online, we met up again and married a year later in Moscow and then I had to fly back to the UK alone. It took 18 months to complete the immigration process and a lot of costs. I visited every three months and saying goodbye at the airport was gut-wrenching. Everytime I boarded the plane home this song was in my head. Finally, she was able to move here 8 years ago and last year she became a British citizen and we have finally been able to relax and get on with our lives.
Lovely! ❤❤
John left us one afternoon in October 1997 in his Rutan Long-EZ N555JD near Monterey Bay. He was leaving on a jetplane. God bless his memory
I was driving along Monterey Bay the day John Ultra light went into the ocean 😢
So sweet and heartwarming to see and FEEL the genuine love and respect you have for each other. I felt it, we all felt it. This beautiful song brought it out of you both and I appreciate your willingness to share that moment with us. That's what truly makes this channel special. Please cherish and continue to nurture your marriage. You two have something VERY special and rare! Thank you so much!
I was in elementary school in the late sixties and our music teacher handed out the sheet music and we sang this song while she played either guitar or piano. I was tearing up and really couldn't sing the whole thing cleanly. I still can't listen to the song without tearing up. You two have a special gift of love for each other. Thank-you for sharing your life and love of music.
I love the 12 string of John Denver. I love the harmony of PP&M. My sister and s friend and I covered this song at a college talent show. We placed 2nd or 3rd.
Thank you. Your shared love story meant more to than the the video.
Older guy here who lost his spouse two decades ago. I got more from your words and it brought true meaning to why you get so emotional over the song
I love this song & I loved your reaction but my favorite part was seeing & hearing your love for each other. You guys are wonderful 💕
Do "Annie's Song" it is jaw dropping in its beauty
When the original series "Magnum P.I.", starring Tom Selleck, ended its 7th season, it ended on a cliffhanger with Magnum being shot and by the end of the episode, it was still unknown if he would live or die. But the network had cancelled the series, so no resolution was supposed to be given to viewers. Ironically, the name of that episode was "Limbo". Throughout the episode, John Denver's "Looking For Space" was played. It is a beautiful song and fit so well with the storyline.
Fans of "Magnum P.I." started a massive letter writing campaign that ended up changing the cancellation decision of the network. The show was given an 8th season, which allowed the show to wrap up on their own terms and give a satisfying ending to the show for its fans. I'd like to suggest that you give a listen to "Looking For Space". Thanks!
Love his vocals! Incredible!
check out john Denver and placio Dimingo Duet. Perhaps Love. My favorite.
A song like this - and just as good - is Jimmy Buffett's "Come Monday." Really beautiful.
That song is fantastic!
One of my old time favorite singers.... Wow I was 13 years old when this came out... He wrote a lot of beauties. For sure his songs can bring tears to your eyes....
Such a great tone on John's 12-string acoustic guitar!
Hey guys, if you really love this song, there is one where John Denver sings it with Mama Cass live on TV and it was well preserved, very good quality. The sound heavenly together.
Hi Guys, Love John Denver. Grew up here in England watching him every week on tv on his own show. So many wonderful songs. I love the track "Darcy Farrow" from the album "Rocky Mountain High" and there is a beautiful instrumental off the same album called " Season Suite ; Late Winter, Early Spring [ When Everybody Goes To Mexico ] " Season Suite is in 5 parts on the album and this track is part 5. It is just 2 acoustic guitars, one backing, one lead ...both John. Nothing fancy, it's is simply just beautiful to listen to. [ & that's an understatement ] I find it very emotional. This song also affects me when I left Ireland and had to move to England. It broke my heart and leaving behind a girl I grew up with as a child, and then fell head over heals for her. She gave me her favourite album by The Partridge Family, called "Up To Date", because I was always borrowing it ... and an excuse to see her. I still have the album with her name "Anne" written in the centre label. Every track reminds me of her. Memories & music for me cannot be separated. Thankyou for playing more John Denver. It was a very sad loss when he went. Byee Jim X
I sang it to my guitar in the ahge of sixteen ...soo sweet and deepfeeling - your common crying - wonderful !
Thank you for reminding me how good his original version is. His voice is amazing.
In the early seventies when the soft rock sounds of bands like Bread , the Carpenters and John Denver came out my friends and I who were into the cool music... progressive rock, jazz fusion We made fun of the soft stuff and said it was corny. I now see this music as an important part of the soundtrack of my life. Once you hear these beautiful Melodies they are permanently etched on your heart. It is so validating and rewarding to re-experience them through your eyes. Thanks Nick and Lex for sharing our musical Legacy all these years later.
✌️😎
Then as now leaving on an air plane means a short local flight. Jet plane means a great distance, if not over the ocean.
This was written during the Vietnam War, and many young men left on a jet plane not knowing that they would ever return again...
Howdy lovers. Like watching you two cry together. Crying is an emotional release. It's good for the soul. I cry all the time usually about nothing just happy at my age to still be among the living. I'm always mildly surprised when I wake in the morning...everything's on it's way you know. Live it large you two. Hey Lex enjoyed your use of a metronome, haven't seen one of those sense my drum lessons at age 13....Danny Terry rocks!!
This is the only version of this song that I know. In my opinion, it cant be improved on. oh, and..........I'm not crying, your crying..............good one, guys.
So sweet to see Lex's reaction. I cried right along with her
So I remember this "Story" of you 2 being separated, and I thought back to this song. I knew that it was about a Vietnam era Soldier on his way out, and saying a sad goodbye to his girl, with a chance he may never see her again.
[edit: "Though not written about the Vietnam War, the Peter, Paul and Mary cover of the song was interpreted by at least one writer to be a protest song about a soldier's impending deployment"].
But I had to add it to that Playlist series that I created for your Anniversary years ago as part of _your_ journey. It was part of the "Story" I wanted you guys to remember, and how it just reinforced your love for each other. 😊
. . . Good for you Nick that you snatched her up and she accepted with whole heart 🙂.
My Dad tried to join the Marines in 1959, and again in 1961 as he was trying to speed-up the process of becoming a U.S. Citizen from Honduras (he had "Flat Feet", so he wasn't able to join). There are a LOT of things that could have been terrible if he was accepted (I think of the film "The Great Santini"), but I'm glad he couldn't go for the exceptions at that time in the Army & Marines.
My Parents and I always loved John Denver. I don't think my Mom can listen to his music anymore though, as she takes to heart her younger, more innocent days with my late-Papa'.
- Love you guys, BIG HUGE hugs for you 2 and Mar-mar (in the background) 🐕❤🔥💗💓❤🔥.
A song you haven't reacted to from John is a fave of mine; "Calypso", take a look into what its about. It is something that we had on TV that many watched with anticipation every week.
It’s a big tear jerker snags anybody hard that has had a hard separation or God forbid a divorce. It instantaneously brings back some tough memories of watching a plane fly away or seeing someone looking sad in your rear view mirror as you drive away. Great reaction always great to see true emotions. ❤️💔🥲
John Denver has such a great voice, and love your t-shirt!❤
The 60s and 70s were the most romantic period in rock-pop-music history -- or even in all history. Great video!
It's always good to hear the song by the person who wrote the song.
This song was always by Peter, Paul, and Mary for me. Big time fave.
I had the pleasure of seeing Peter, Paul and Mary in January of 1970 at the Winter Festival For Peace here in NYC. They were the organizers of the Festival. They did this song and "Puff The Magic Dragon". However, also on the bill that night were Jimi Hendrix, Harry Belafonte, The Young Rascals, Judy Collins, Blood Sweat and Tears, The Cast Of Hair, and Dave Brubeck. Those were the greatest of days man. The irony of course is that John ultimately died in a plane crash.
Peter , Paul, and Mary’s version is my favorite and considered the quintessential version of this legendary tune! I love this version as well!
Same here. But that P,P & M with its three part harmony is just so gorgeous and the first version I ever heard. So, it owns me. But this one is right up there and of course, so good by the songwriter.
Calypso..... and..... Wild Montana Skies
crazy how John and PPM were close friends and their version reached number 1 and his failed to even chart
I recall that version (Peter, Paul & Mary) as a kid back in the late 60s on the radio. You have to realize that we didn't have TH-cam back then. So you had to buy the album or single in order to listen (whenever you felt the urge to do so). The times you did catch it on the radio was very special.
How many times I wept with my wife, we are far apart now...but no tear was in vain.
I marvel that you are able to continue your work on this channel while the country is in crisis. Thank you and I wish you good luck.
Rumor has it that John Denver was in a bar in Scottsdale, AZ and some girls asked him what he did for a living. He said, "I'm a songwriter" and they said, "Oh yeah? Then write a song." He grabbed a napkin and wrote these words down.
Sounds like Graham Nash’s story
Just a Song Before I Go
Beautiful rendition. Please also react to Peter, Paul & Mary's version.
John Denver originally recorded this song in 1969. That recording was released as a single and included on his album "Rhymes & Reasons." The version you just listened to was a newer version he recorded for his 1973 "Greatest Hits" album. I prefer the 1969 version myself. It's faster and more "folky."
My first ride in a jet plane was across the pond, circa 1969. The "wait for me" didn't always pan out. Welcome home.
My memories of all his songs are my mother making supper putting one of his records on the turn table and singing alone with it as she made dinner, and that's what I remember every time I hear one of his song and also what a tragic thing it was when he died so Young.
Watching you two feel the music is pure joy. 💙💜💚❤
Beautiful song
I only know the Peter, Paul, and Mary version. I remember it was a huge hit.
When I was a kid, I was trying to record the theme to On Her Majesty's Secret Service, got regular play on the radio in '69. This entailed setting up the microphone for my cassette recorder next to the radio and try to catch the song when it played. So, I heard Leaving on a Jet Plane, which came out in '69, a lot before I could snag the OHMSS theme.
you two are the same soul in 2 bodies
Guys please react to JD with Placido Domingo. 'Perhaps Love'
It's simply incredible. It doesn't get much better than this.❤
Great song, love love love John Denver! I’ll do a search, but have you guys heard his “Sunshine on my shoulders”? Omg…..a MUST listen!
JD was 23 when he wrote this.
I've played all his music from the 70's when I learnt to play guitar.
Paul Stookey from Peter, Paul & Mary, The Wedding Song. As beautiful as a song gets.
I see J Denver, I hit like. It's a tiny thing for such talent.
Thank you for sharing your heartfelt emotions . Love the Canadian flag tee....Glenn from Canada
What a gorgeous song. It's been a long time since I've heard John sing it.
This song always brings me back to elementary school and music class with autoharps.
This was written back in the "free love" era, so fooling around on the side was *a little* more socially acceptable then. Check out the Peter, Paul and Mary version sometime. Sublime harmonies.
Many couples shed many tears listening to this song during the Vietnam War era.
John Denver song...I'm Sorry = tears
Nice! I mainly listen to ROCK, Hard Rock early Metal so I keep forgetting how awesome John's voice is. I have a Top 5 favorite female singers list (Linda Ronstadt, Barbara Streisand, Ann Wilson, Carly Simon and Karen Carpenter) but I don't have a Top 5 male singers. Gotta put John Denver!! And maybe;
David Gates of Bread,,,
Glenn Shorrock of The Little River Band,,,,
Geoff Tate of Queensryche
#5 contenders; Harry Nillson,, and Tony Williams of The Platters for the song;
ONLY YOU 💕 Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎🎸🤟🏼
Sang by the drillers , headed to drop an earth killing asteroid...in the movie " Armageddon" ...such a nice touch. 👍♥️
Peter Paul and Mary had a great hit with it which I loved but John could really sing play and touch your heart
The original title was “ babe I hate to go”
Estoy llorando contigo Lex!
I like your shirt..the 51st state of Canada. lol
Nik & Lex....I'm Sure You've Seen The Movie "ARMAGEDDON". There's A Scene Where Steve Buscemi Starts Singing This Song Just Before They Rocket Out To Space.
As beautiful as this is, Peter, Paul and Mary's version is even more effective. It was their only #1 hit and was very popular in 1969, a year or two before John Denver became a huge star with Country Roads.
Wonderful reaction as usual guys. If this song doesn't hit you, you really need to check your pulse. I would suggest reacting to "Fly Away" his duet with Olivia Newton John. Two angels singing together. Sublime.
Try Annie’s Song…my personal favorite John Denver song written for his wife.
Amazing that he received so much flack and criticism by almost everyone. Folk people said he wasn’t folk enough. Country fans said he was too pop and even We Are The World rejected his offer to sing with them. Ahh! Always thought he was great
John did not always treat Annie well, but this is a beautiful song. This song and "Annie's Song" makes up for some of it.
John Denver? Click "LIKE" then listen. It's safe. 😊
I forgot how good this is. Thanks.
love this . he did it with the Mitchell trio first.
Check out A live concert of John And Orchestra from 1976-BBC Sessions. Listen to "Calypso"..A great song he wrote about Jacques Cousteau's Ship.
Have you reacted to Leader of the Band? That song kills me every time. Thank you for your beautiful reaction to this masterpiece. ❤
what a voice
"TICKING" by Elton John and Bernie Taupin
John played a Guild 512 at that time
🥰🥰
Nice t shirt , my city
Beautiful song ..
Lovely but the Peter, Paul and Mary version is my favorite. Maybe because that's the version I first heard in the 60s, John's music wasn't being played just covers
Peter Yarrow, the last survivor of the group, died about a month ago. Peter Paul & Mary did covers, too, and some of them were passed onto more famous covers, like "The First Time (Ever I Saw Your Face).
While I love this version, that version has such beautiful three part harmony. And for me too, it was the first one I heard. So, I’m with you. That one owns me, for better or for worse.
You guys are too precious. Unfortunately, I always think of the scene from the film Armageddon when Ben Affleck, Michael Duncan Clarke and Steve Buscemi sing that song to Liv Tyler....well, the surprise to me is that Steve Buscemi actually sounded good, in contrast to Michael Duncan Clarke. At the time I was listening to it when it was popular, the image was all about the young dudes going off to war in Vietnam....and that was what the song always meant to me. However, Lex's personal take is heartfelt.
Beautiful
Nice song and he can sing.
I think you guys should just do a track by track reaction to his Greatest Hits record.
His song about children, For Baby........OMG, talk about tear jerkers.
There are times when watching a live version of a song is better. This was one of those times. 😐
Anytime you can watch his songs being played at the Wildlife Concert..do it.
Lovely song but it is fantastic when he sings it with Mama Cass.
John Denver died tragically in a plane crash on October 12, 1997. 🙏🏿
Please 🙏 give a listen to Calypso, John’s salute to Jacque Cousteau the famous marine biologist, such a beautifully powerful song. I know that you will absolutely love it.
The song transcends…
Peter Paul and Mary had a hit with this song.
❤️
A Viet Nam era ballad
❤
