  • Apologies in advance for the long video. If you've been following my Vanagon videos, you know I just recently got the van back on the road.
    Within 150 miles, the oil pressure warning light/buzzer went off on the highway, at speed. In this video, I mostly talk through some of the possible causes of this, ranging from minor electrical glitches to major mechanical problems.
    I'll do a shorter, more hands-on diagnostic and repair soon.

    Your issue from 12yrs ago I believe helped me to figure out why , after replacing my water pump and taking it for the drive home ,,, one of the buzzers came on. Well , I realized that I had forgotten to reattach it after replacing the pump. It had broken off, (the plastic around the copper wire was super brittle and the wire broke off while I had been working on the pump replacement). I repaired the wire last night and just didn’t have the oomph to start it up again with hopes that the buzzer wouldn’t come on again … Crossing fingers as I’m heading out to start it up again . Thanks !

    Man, I’m having these same symptoms. I’m worried it’s my engine. Thanks for the video

    The buzzer problem is typical of vanagons after driving extended periods of time. The low pressure oil sender is a basically a pressure switch that keeps the circuit open when the oil pressure is good for anything less than 2000 rpm and the computer completely ignores the high pressure sender for less than 2000 rpm. When the rpm goes above 2000 rpm the computer looks at the high pressure sender and ignores the low pressure sender. The high pressure sender does the opposite of the low pressure...

    @JR3059 Thanks. I've had the van since 2003 and hope I won't need to replace the engine. Time do break out the toolbox again this weekend and see if I can verify the engine's condition.

    ...sender and the circuit for it is CLOSED to indicate good oil pressure as opposed to the OPEN circuit of the low pressure sender. The Wasserboxer is very picky about what kind of oil filter you use as well and this can cause the buzzer to go off. If the engine is old it may be necessary to use a higher weight oil, something like 20W50 for summer and 15W30-40 for winter unless it is really cold, then you want to go 10W30.

    Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a real oil pressure problem.

    quick question: I have low pressure problem (not electrical), I installed a monometer to check real engine pressure. Which is for this vehicle the proper oil pressure? in other words which is the correct range of pressure to expect? thanks.

      Ooh... Offhand I wouldn't know. You'd need to look that up in the repair manual. Best of luck.

    I learned a lot watching your video, thank you.
    I've got an awful electrical noise coming from my engine bay right now. I'd love for you to have a watch and tell me what you think!

      Tristan Pratt I'm not sure how much help I can be, but if you post a link, I'll take a look and let you know if I have any guesses.

    maybe you pathed wire is touching something and grounding itself ???

  • @MercedesDieselGuy
    @MercedesDieselGuy  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks, but you're preaching to the choir. This was a year and a half ago. It turned out to be a genuine low oil pressure problem, due to a worn-out bottom end. A used, running longblock was the solution.

      @MercedesDieselGuy  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @zacharybaldwin9022 the engine?
      This goes WAY back. I think I got the used engine in early 2012. Much different market then, and I got the engine from an acquaintance, so I probably got a good deal.
      Paid $275 I think, but I don't think you could find a runner anywhere near that cheap now.

    Don't over think it, the engine probably needs a rebuild.

      Correct. But, at the time, I wasn't ready to throw in the towel without data to back that up.

    I'm going through the same thing right now - I have had my Vanagon for 12 years now - so if it needs a new engine - I'm ok with it. It still runs very strong, so I am curious to find the issue - I'll change the .9 senors tomorrow.
