I had the pleasure of hearing Buddy Rich at a jazz festival around 1980...INCREDIBLE!!!
Me, time @ West Virginia Wesleyan College.WVWC when Rich was there. Student Craig Babcock on sax could've blown then all of the stage except for Rich.
Always loved Buddy... probably still the best jazz drummer ever recorded but he also could be (and often was) a real dick to work with. His ego was very large but it was clearly also very fragile.

@@jeffreycraven8154 I would have loved to have been there and seen your friend play. First sax Steve Marcus was with buddy 12 years. A real sweetheart. He gave me a pair of buddy's sticks. In 77 in Cincinnati. I offered Steve 100. Bucks for the one's buddy used that night. HE got em off of buddy's bass and handed them to me. He said if buddy found out there's money involved he would fire him and leave him stranded. Ok to give them away but no selling. Steve is the greatest. Thanks for sharing.
@@williamfeilhauer When a friend dies with so much musical jazz talent be it in their twenties to 90's, I cry. The best tenor sax player I ever heard was my friend Bill. Bill shot himself in the head about 1993 and died. Care for your fellow musicians; let'em know you care when they're suffering.
It's unbelievable that almost every drummer in the jazz era were born and dead while Roy Haynes was still alive.

Elvin just changed the fucking game. You can hear a before and after his influence in the recordings. Fantastic drummer who influenced my favorite, Tony Williams.

Glad to see my favourite soloist Joe Morello, the man who bridges jazz and rock, included followed by Tony Williams the only jazz drummer I can think of to play on a classic punk album.
All in all, Gary did a really fantastic job here. It's extremely difficult to include everyone, or it would have to be in 5 installments!!! Yes, I agree that Chick Webb, Billy Higgins, Vioa Smith, Jack De Johnette, Shelly Manne, Sonny Payne, Lionel Hampton, Billy Cobham, and others whom people mentioned, should be included. I can think of others that I really love also like O'Neil Spencer, Denzil Best, Mel Lewis, Alan Dawson, Chico Hamilton, Jimmy Cobb, Rufus Jones,, Sam Woodyard, Butch Miles, Ed Shaugnessy, Art Taylor, Charli Persip, Paul Motian, Sheila E, Cindy Blackman, Joe LaBarbara, Terri Lyne Carrington, Ed Blackwell, Kenny Washington, Jeff Hamilton, Ed Thigpen, Osie Johnson, Joe Cusatis, Omar Hakim, Dennis Chambers, Grady Tate, Stan Levey, Willie Rodriguez, Danny Barcelona, Jake Jerger, Roy Burns, Les DeMerle, Ben Riley, Connie Kay, Tony Royster Jr., Frankie Dunlop, George Wettling, Bobby Rosengarten, Jake Hanna, Nick Fatool, James Bradley Jr., Chuck Flores, Jeff Tain Watts, Peter Erskine, Danny Gottlieb, Marty Morrell, Eliot Zigmund... Awesome collection of greats. As others have mentioned, several videos could be done. Some of my favs not included here would be Billy Cobham, Louie Bellson, Rufus "Speedy" Jones, and Sam Woodyard.
Many others should be added but working on other things now. This video represents a general overview of some but not all. Thanks for checking it out.
I appreciate that the list is subjective, but no Sonny Payne? Sonny was Basie’s favorite drummer. Every subsequent drummer matched his style and approach to song book.

Driving on base to work it hit me hard when I heard Kenny Clarke and also Philly Jones had died; pullled off the road.
Carry on drummers; man or woman we need you so we can look at you and say, "That's so beautiful".
Few drummers made it past 80 years old. Many passed on at 40, 50, 60 ,and 70 years old. Joe Morello lived to be 83 and Roy Haynes is in his late 90's. If you intend to make your mark, just get out there and play and record.
Chick Webb, Gene Krupa, Art Blakey, Buddy Rich, Shadow Wilson, Max Roach, Elvin Jones are my favorites on this list. No disrespect to any of the others. I wish Shelley Manne had been included.

Papa Jo and Joe Morello, my favorite 2 drummers. Soooo musical. Buddy gets the nod for driving a big band. nobody has his speed/power.
Anyone into this type of thing, look for Classic Rock Drum solos with Carmine Appice. He knew a lot of the guys, so it makes for an interesting video.
You can ask your library to aquire it.

There are always going to be players left off and people pissed off. But these guys were the most influential or the most recorded, during the best era for jazz. I think it is a fair list. But, it is only a list...so lighten up.
True but Louis Bellson should be on the first list. It's like missing Bonham or Peart on a rock drummer list. Bellson was #2 behind Rich.
I think Viola Smith should be added to this list, amazing swing drummer.

Hello, in addition to the great American drummers, you can add to this list a European hub, for example, Jansen 1937 -2008, right now it has started to become extremely popular and many people are wondering how they have never heard of this first-class player.

They're probably in the next installment. If everyone who should be included was included, the list would go on and on and on.
Great job overall, though I wish there was a bit more comping to show what really matters about jazz drums, rather than solos which are often the same military rudiments applied to different sounds.
None of these drummers life expectancy is that great.

All monster players Buddy Rich was the best of them all I believe! Saw him in the 70s Wildwood NJ London Ale house.. Saw Philly Joe Jones in Trenton back in the late 60s as a kid we snuck in! I believe it was Greenwood tavern! Also Art Blakey another time, all monster players! Barrett Deems should be in the list! He played into his 80s, used to play with Jack Teagarden and Pops "Satchmo" then Danny Barcelona from Hawaii took over with Louis Armstrong!
David Bento -Now thats just not true. Buddy was great, but didn't swing like many of em.
buddy was technical, but he didnt play jazz, he played the drums with some other instruments over it. i would say he was a good drummer, but not a good musician or person

@@rileywilliams1568 Really? Many of "em" said Buddy was the best. Basie hired him for a week, when Sonny Payne was ill. If Buddy didn't swing, Basie would have never hired him. You really need to listen more.

Interesting you pegged Tony Williams as the last guy of the old guard. I would have given Jack Dejohnette that honor. Great video nonetheless.

Yes. Rufus Speedy Jones - Great drummer (May 27, 1936 - April 25, 1990) he worked the greats. Lionel Hampton, Count Basie, Manyard, Duke Ellington. Good call. If I ever do another he will be in there.

I will add Jack...I know he's only one of the most influential drummers of the 20th century and I agree! I'll get it done! It is a bit of a pick and choose situation though...I mean do I add Lenny White? He is more jazz/fusion though...this time line tries to hit the straight jazz heavy's. Any suggestions appreciated:)

Man the greatest Jazz drummer period. Scratch that if not the greatest drummer on the planet is Danny Richmond of Charles Mingus band. His playing was God level way ahead of everyone else. Rock groups made hits stealing from Charles Mingus album. Dannys interview even broke it down but for him not to be shown absolutely pardon my french bullshit. Mozart on drums, he painted with those sticks.
I agree that Danny Richmond is definitely one of the greats! I should have put him in there. I think it's interesting that I make a video and I do what I can (it was very time consuming and to do this) and then people form opinions on what I should have done, what wasn't done, etc. They go so far as to call it 'bullshit' that I didn't do something they think I should have done! I mean, what the heck? I just put this together and that is that. If you want to include others you can make one yourself. It's great that this video has spurred creativity in you and makes you want to form an opinion about what should be done. Excellent! Then do it!

@@GaryBensonmusic Thank you for compiling this amazing list of drummers. I really enjoyed the presentation and was introduced to drummers I never knew about.
I actually liked Karen Carpenter better, truthfully. She was more than adept and should have put her foot down. It just exacerbated her body self-consciousness to be forced to sing up front.
Too bad she was a ridiculously bad codependent. Should have told her mother where to go, and make better choices.
I wish her solo record doesn't sound very, very dated.

Minus friggin horns (including sax, technically a woodwind due to the reed)
Plus, smoking was a huge thing. Not to mention, jazz was loaded with drugs. Namely heroin.
