Had a GTi-6 a few years ago. Brilliant hot hatch, lovely flat torque curve and the engine will just pull and pull. Coupled with the close ratio 6 speed box it's fantastic, 3rd gear would absolutely eat up b-roads. Felt like you didn't give enough time to cover the handling which was it's main feature really. Fantastic steering feel and feedback, don't think i've had anything since which was quite so confidence inspiring as you always knew exactly what it was doing.
One of the best hot hatches I've ever driven, 5 years a go I made the mistake of buying a mk3 Golf 16v instead on the basis that their prices would rise faster than the 306's, not the case as it would seem!

The previous owner was in his 70s and God knows how they managed to convince him to buy it, but after 3 days of ownership he returned it. He complained that it was far to quick 😅😅 So I got it for less than half original price!! I was just 19 when this came out and it was my first car and I got insured no problem at all. And I lived in a rough scheme in Aberdeen, I had a very basic job, it was kept on the street overnight (something which I would regret later) and all in it cost me £788 and that was way back then. So if you adjust for inflation, it's probably around the £1,500-2,000 mark!!!! Basically every penny I earned went on insurance, fuel and road tax 😂😂 Those were the days eh!! Looks incredible, they're very comfy and practical, very reliable, it sounds better than almost all other 4-pots (my ears are still bleeding after test driving an FK8) and handles like no other FWD car, can't drift a Clio of any kind like this thing. It's not perfect, but going into a corner too fast in one of these will put a bigger smile on your face than anything else a car can do. I'd probably take a GTi-6 over the Rallye though to be fair. And this was what I had next, In GTI-6 guise in red, after my Astra GTE 16v. I remember the owner of the local Peugeot garage took me out in his for a test drive. First time he chucked it round a roundabout I knew I had to have one.
I had A GTI-6 to replace my Astra GTE 16 valve ... both had amazing engines, I had a quick shift fitted which sorted the awful gear shift. Bits kept on falling of it and I sold it in 2002 with only 47,000 miles because of the issues, my Astra had covered 90 k with no issues. The 0-60 quoted was misleading because it had tall gearing in second so it felt like a 7 second car, and some write ups said as much. I never felt as confident as I did in the Astra, it felt heavy, and the steering was better, but the Astra I had was the leather, or Champion edition which ran lower profile tyres on bigger bbs alloys as standard and was more communicative. The Astra was a great car for driving fast around country roads, what it lost in ultimate precision it gained in comfort and ease of driving. The 16 valve had lower and firmer suspension than the wobbly 8 valve with anti roll bars front and rear and an extra degree of negative camber.
I recently just got rid of my gti6.... One of my favourite cars I've owned but that particular one wasn't the best. I shall be buying another one in the future and buying a good one!
I will never forget the day I got stuck behind one these doing a max of 35mph between Builth Wells and Rhayader . 2 elderly couples, not a day under 80 out for a Sunday drive in a 306 Rallye! It was both cool and depressing at the same time.
I had a red Peugeot 205 1.9 GTI in the mid 90’s and it was amazing. I’ve not owned or driven another French car since tbf. Would love to have a drive in one today to see how well it stands up.
One of the last of the great Peugeots, had 306 Dturbo for 6 years. All the looks of a hot hatch but with a noisy diesel. Drove well just sounded like a tractor lol
When I was 21 I really wanted a gti-6 but it was out of my price range of 7k plus insurance was alot higher. I ended up getting a 106 gti with 20k on the clock, lovely little car and was surprisingly reliable for the 5 years I had it. Still wish I had the 306 though
306 handled like a dream, but 205 more chunk-able. I think the 306 has been my favourite handling car I have owned, well favourite front wheel drive. Original "quality" trim is not what you want. 18 months of ownership and window winder broken heater control broken trim hanging off. Still my Megane of same vintage was not much better but drove nothing like as well and driving position of Megane 1 was pretty poor.
I miss my 306 XSi. I did find putting 17" wheels helped instead of the std 15" wheels helped give a better ratio for pulling the car up a hill at lower revs. It was a real pleasure to drive on motorways. It still had plenty of get up and go sitting at 70mph to jump up to 90+. Without having to drop out of 5th gear. Never had any engine troubles.....just went through so many exhausts due to corrosion.
I'm on my third 2.0 XSi and have had Ph1, Ph2 and Ph3. My favourite was possibly the 8v Ph1 in that lovely Chateux Grey colour. I timed the 0-60mph many times at between 7.5 to 8 seconds. Absolutely fantastic rural countryside B-road car, and the 8v was so whisper quiet on the motorway even at ahem.......... higher speeds!
Had a GTi6 back in 2008 was my first proper performance car and it was absolutely awesome, had high lift cams, full exhaust, intake, it felt rapid, I've had quicker cars since but I have fond memories of hooning one of these around b roads the throttle response and noise was fantastic, also it was an immaculate example and had over 130k on the clock! So they keep going if treated right 👌
When i passed my test my first car was a 306 1.6 XS. Basically a GTi look a like with a 100BHP 1.6. I agree with the gearbox. Peugeot used these horrible linkages but luckily there are upgrades available.
Closes I got was a W reg 306 hdi glx estate as a company car, but it was a fantastic car and quick as I remember (seems 90bhp was more than adequate back then).
I had the 306 dturbo which had the fuel pump turned up and updated suspension and Alloys. Absolute weapon on a country road, and a wet road you had to be extremely careful not to back off mid corner. Sold that to buy the Williams, although very tempted to buy the 306 rallye but didn't feel it looked much different from a normal GTI-6. 15" white steels is what it needed. Real shame, the Williams had lovely Gold and looked like the real deal. Performance wise and handling wise there's not much in it (having raced one) apart from the Clio felt more on it's toes and happier on the limit.
Iv owned one of these- absolutly super fun! So chuckable! - iv alson barrel rolled a 206 with no seatbelt on down a road and into a ditch in 1998 and had barely a scratch on me - all the windows popped the parcel shelf even flew out and i climbed out the window into a patch of stinging nettles which peed me off! Lol the small pugs will always be alright with me!
I drove a 306 from London to near Perigeux in the Dordogne and thought it had excellent steering, suspension, chassis control and comfort for the early 1990’s...
I have fond memories of my Citroën Saxo vts 16v, another hot Frensh hatch. Loads of fun for a small budget, and nimble to drive. Unfortunately it’s almost impossible to find one in decent condition these days. You don’t see them around anymore.
The first hot hatch to use a six speed manual gearbox. I think that it is a brilliant gearbox. The only issue was the location of the gearbox restricts the turning circle on a right hand turn slightly.
Great to see one of these - I had one in black just like this from new as a daily driver, and it was a brilliant car, which I only spun twice! But you couldn't get them with a sunroof or aircon - so it was bloomin' hot in the summer, the only failing I can remember. Loved the 306 - also owned a dTurbo, which had a great kick when the turbo came on song, and later a roadster (cabriolet with a factory hardtop) which had the same 2-litre petrol engine as the Rallye, albeit not so pepped up. A lovely looking car the cabrio, but wobbled like a jelly if you hustled it.
Great cars, had a 1998 Diablo Gti-6 years ago. Fantastic handling and engine and had no issues. Weak cam belts though and need changing regularly. They made 500 Rallyes available in 3 colours, I forget the ratio but it was something like 200 red, 200 black and 100 white and they actually made one in blue too. Remember to n 1996 when these first came out, having a 6 speed gearbox was a revelation in a hatchback, the turning circle really suffered for it though. Overall a good reliable car, I know some of these that have smashed 200k miles.
Great video JM! In Australia, Peugeot bastardised the Rallye, ours didn't get the lusty two-litre from the GTi-6, just the regular 1.8 plugger. It also got none of the lightweight mods were, just a Rallye sticker pack. Bit of a shame.
Really? You suprised a couple of EP3 Type-R? I find that hard to believe. Specially since the civic type-r was probably the most powerful hothatch of that generation. It's for a reason why the K20A is a very sought after engine. Compared to the engine of this peugeot.
DC2 Integra Type R road test please. It was around the same time as the Rallye. My friend had a 306 GTi6 in red. It was an awesome car, I remember being sat facing the wrong way on a wet roundabout because he'd lifted off when going in too quick 😂
306 as a model in general, is probably the best choice if you're out for an analog driving experience, which is fun as fuck, and a relatively comfy ride when you settle down. The back seats are pretty comfy and roomy, the sport seats are not that good, but the standard ones are comfy as hell. The car is very reliable, especially the diesels, and parts are everywhere. Oh, and you shouldn't phase out the diesels, especially the 71ps 1.9 NA diesel. It is much faster and much more fun than you expect, and after swapping out the air filter and removing the cat (DON'T STRAIGHTPIPE IT), you'll get one of the best 4banger diesel noises out there. Tame and somewhat quiet at low RPMs and sharp and peppy at high RPMs. I have a 306 1.9d 71, had it for 18 years now, and it goes from 0-60 in 11 secs flat, which is pretty peppy for such a weak engine. Also the cars have a relatively well made bodywork that is galvanizes, but they do tend to rust behind the rear pillars, especially the three door versions.
This reminds me of my 1.6 306 , great ride yet could be threaded through the B roads. It had passive rear wheel steering which you could feel giving a slight kick to help it round the corner. Often temped by GTI or XSI on ebay.
@@hero-wp7tm that's fair enough, I was referring to the older Bosch pump - isn't that also the one that means you can get the engine running with only 5 wires? Seen the XUDs used in kit cars for this reason.
Good lord I love 306s, I've had a few, never a rallye but a gti 6 was the closest, the rest were tractors 💨💨 My last being a Y reg HDI meridian a few years ago

My girlfriend had a 306 xnd diesel, no turbo, no power steering and the bushes were knackered, but it was a great handling car. Lift off oversteer was a piece of piss. I can only imagine one of those would be great. A front wheel drive car I could happily own.
James in a splendid mood in this beauty. Too bad the seats aren’t too good cause they look beautiful in that material. Im from the states, would love to see a fiat coupé driven. Those things always fascinated me and i feel like they are super cheap now
I don't know what he is on about with the seats. I own a 306 XSI and the seats are very comfy, I have chronic back pain and the seats never feel uncomfortable or aggrevate my back, even on bad days...
Love the 306 and have had many over the years amongst other makes. I just think they have a great shape and have had more diesels to be honest and they are great and very, very reliable.
Dont know about all time but definitely in the top 3
Likewise but it did overtake well for diesel of the time
Did feel brisk when kept in the 2-4k rev range. The template for today's sporty diesels.
So they keep going if treated right 👌
I like the 80's music at the end makes the video all the more enjoyable!
gives me classic top gear vibes, love the video
Knocking the reviews out of the park, thanks for that.
My pleasure Eric
Ah you've taken me back in time, had a 306 Rallye, loved it, so low to the road, great steering and at the time was shit off a shovel 😁
Yes, faster than his beloved GTE 16v. 😁
Had a two litre xsi in red. Loved it m fast. Stylish. Comfortable. Love Peugeots
Had the choice of one of these or a DC2 back in 2007. Went for the DC2 and don't regret it for a second
200 Red, 200 White & 100 Black.
The car I did the most miles every with as a daily ❤️
All 306GTi’s were 6 speed (in the UK at least). The XSi and S16 were 5 speed.
Here in the Netherlands we have diffrent versions: This Rallye gti, the gti-6 and a pre facelift 5 speed gti.
Anthony Levin Jean Paul I thought as much. The 5 speed GTi was probably badged S16 in the UK and had around 150bhp
@@MrGwaldo that is true, also the 206 gti in the Netherlands was sold in France as a s16 gti
In the rest of the Europe we call GTI-6 the one with 6 speed gear box. Most was 5 speed.
I had a '98 306 DTurbo in that rather nice metallic sky blue, wonderful car
Great video JM! In Australia, Peugeot bastardised the Rallye, ours didn't get the lusty two-litre from the GTi-6, just the regular 1.8 plugger. It also got none of the lightweight mods were, just a Rallye sticker pack. Bit of a shame.
My 306 gti6 was a really good car took every thrashing a 21 year old could give it, never went wrong one of my best cars
The last good looking car made by Peugeot??? I think so, mine was black like this, loved it!
Loved my 6 and surprised a few ep3's. Not half as much of a surprise you get when you lift off in a corner. Great fun.
Really? You suprised a couple of EP3 Type-R? I find that hard to believe. Specially since the civic type-r was probably the most powerful hothatch of that generation. It's for a reason why the K20A is a very sought after engine. Compared to the engine of this peugeot.
@@ichigozanghetsu trough a corner easily. On the straight not so, fri*k the straight its for fast engines
This is fun...that looks and one of the best drivers car with FWD
3.35 the sound!!! I love 306 S16!
Ive always wanted a 106 rallye and liked the look of the 306 rallye too but didn’t know much about them you don’t see many about
Please Jay please bro review a 106 gti I had one at 19 in 2007 and I thought I was the coolist guy going and my names Jay love ya vids :)
I had an S1 106 Rallye as my first car. Miss it so much!
You need to get your hands on a Lynx Supercharged Gti - 6 - a phenomenal piece of kit that takes one of these firmly to the next level.
Bib salivates at the sight of a Peugeot....just a short hop away from his very own 106 diesel....
I had a Rallye in red, awesome car...
DC2 Integra Type R road test please. It was around the same time as the Rallye.
My friend had a 306 GTi6 in red. It was an awesome car, I remember being sat facing the wrong way on a wet roundabout because he'd lifted off when going in too quick 😂
Jay , thank you. You doing fantastic job!!! Dream job!😉
My dream car!!!
Great review would love to see a review on the slower diesel brother of the car the Dturbo which I personally own!
Have you turned the pump up?
jase_llan Not yet on a more fiddly Lucas pump as apposed to the Bosch, and don’t think the xud motor has that much life left in it.
@@hero-wp7tm that's fair enough, I was referring to the older Bosch pump - isn't that also the one that means you can get the engine running with only 5 wires? Seen the XUDs used in kit cars for this reason.
jase_llan I don’t know but the they obviously aren’t ecu controlled so yea I can believe that it would
I had that car in cuba. Best car i ever had
This & the Gti-6...marvellous...👍
Love Rallye’s love my S1 106
Good lord I love 306s, I've had a few, never a rallye but a gti 6 was the closest, the rest were tractors 💨💨
My last being a Y reg HDI meridian a few years ago
I thought a 306GTi6 was a tractor, compared with my 206GTi180!
Mac Sixtyfive haha 😂 I meant diesels lol
RichJW I still see a few around, that pale metallic blue/grey. Neither a male or female colour haha
Dan23 7 haha. Moonstone!!! Or “manstone” as we used to label it back in the day, lol.
I had a 106 rallye. Cracking car round b roads . Same colour as this one
Had a gti6.. and a few other quick hatches but by far i Loved my megane coupe. Mine was in a magazine feature on 90s hot hatches for 'modern classics' 5th edition. The 306 was rated the best over all but they classed the Megane as the best car to drive.
And i'd agree :) great little series you've done mate but id like to see your opinion on the meganes! (Pre facelift with that lovely williams engine)
My girlfriend had a 306 xnd diesel, no turbo, no power steering and the bushes were knackered, but it was a great handling car. Lift off oversteer was a piece of piss. I can only imagine one of those would be great. A front wheel drive car I could happily own.
no one will ever knock you for driving a Peugeot as long as it has a Rallye sticker on it.
Got a stock S16 and GTi-6 here. Rallye was just a more uncomfortable GTi-6 unlike the 106 and 205 Rallye's which were much more sport oriented.
I was lucky enough to own a 306 Rallye in 2008, Great Car but I replaced it with a Honda Integra Type R which was in a different League!
Your look suites the car perfectly and vice versa. Please buy one :-)
I miss my 306 cabriolet 2.0 , even as a cabriolet handled lovely 👍
Had a lovely Diablo Red GTi-6 - Great car
I also own a diablo red one - i think it's by far the nicest color for it!
Owned one after my 205 1.9. It was probably a better car but wasn't as fun as my 205 hence I sold it and bought a mi16 powered 205.
405 mi16. Best pug ever. Were built properly too and didnt fall apart like modern Peugeot's
Love the 306 and have had many over the years amongst other makes. I just think they have a great shape and have had more diesels to be honest and they are great and very, very reliable. I bought my daughter for her 18th birthday a mark 3, 2.0hdi d turbo 3dr in moonstone blue. A great first car and very safe. Do I like 306's....oh yes I do. Do I have one now....not 1 but 5. 1x mark 3, hdi d turbo. 1x mark 3 hdi estate. 1x mark 2 gti6. 1x mark 3 gti6. 1x rallye. Told you i liked them!!
Can't be a DTurbo if it's a HDi my dude. HDI with the sporty trim was called XS, just like the 1.6 and 2.0 with the same trim. Dturbo was 1.9 TD.
@@HugoAmasing oh the people at dvla have got it wrong on my log book. And i thought my hdi had a turbo and it was diesel. So it is a 306 hdi with d turbo trim...so a 306 hdi d-turbo. If you had a escort 1.6 ghia, would it be just a escort 1.6??? Don't think so! My car is not a hdi xs!!
