  • Omar's talk is about untangling the dichotomy between science/logic and religion. Specifically, he explains how he used both logic and science to affirm his faith as a Muslim. Omar is a history student at UBC, currently pursuing a career in teaching. When he is not studying, he really enjoys spending time with family and traveling. He has been to 11 countries and has spent the last two years living on a small island in Japan (best experience of his life). This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

"As a Christian I respect him and I agree with his views on logical thinking and not to just believe in blind faith."
Sure, but this doesn't automatically mean that we are capable of using critical thinking correctly, "thinking for yourself" is not a qualification and doesn't guarantee correct results.
this guy is simply fooling himself, he "knows" the answers to the questions, the answers cannot change , so he researches enough (from Muslim apologetic science sites) to confirm his biases, if evidence contradicts you religious bias, than he convinces himself that the evidence cannot be reliable. This guy takes enough science to satisfy his confirmation bias.

Greetings from Sweden too sister! I'm writing from my husbands account. Do you know how I realized Islam is truth? It started when I was brainwashed by atheism, couple of years ago when it was really popular. (Most depressing time of my life, imagine not even thinking God exists, we come from apes, we have no souls, when we die everything is over etc). But studying the human body and especially the cells, all the different cells were made of. I got a realization. The cells we are made of are for sure MADE, CREATED. And NOT by "evolution". Because non-religious scientists have proven that the proposed age of the universe is too short for even ONE single celled organism to develop by random chance evolution. There is actually no proof of evolution on a macroscale. And there are science in the Holy Quran. I'm so happy I feel so lucky Allah somehow led me to the path of Islam. I'm so grateful. But I have to study Islam more. I want to become a real Muslim. I love Allah so much. God bless you sister.

    • @michaelanderson4849
      @michaelanderson4849 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

@@aarmanhuaeein2028 When you "realized" islam was the "truth", all you did was to make a entirely subjective decision to believe certain claims made in a couple of books and then promoted by others. You are not able to actually objectively verify any of the claims of islam bein the "truth". All you have is subjectivity.
"It started when I was brainwashed by atheism, couple of years ago when it was really popular."
Huh? When was atheism "really popular" in Sweden? And are you claiming less people being atheists or agnostics today than back then?
"Most depressing time of my life, imagine not even thinking God exists"
      I'm sorry you were depressed.
      "we come from apes"
No, that is not what the theories says, at all.
      "we have no souls"
No one have shown the existence of anything resembling a soul. But plese, present objective data supporting the existence of a soul.
"when we die everything is over"
      Why would that be bad?
"But studying the human body and especially the cells, all the different cells were made of. I got a realization. The cells we are made of are for sure MADE, CREATED. And NOT by "evolution""
You "realized" the cells are created? Yet I sense you don't have any objective data to support this. If you actually had objective data supporting this you would present that data in a credible scientific journal for the rest of the world to see.
"Because non-religious scientists have proven that the proposed age of the universe is too short for even ONE single celled organism to develop by random chance evolution."
Proven? Natural science does not "prove" anything. That is not part of the scientific methodology. Natural science works with experiment, forming hypothesis, falsification of hypothesis and formulation of theories.
"There is actually no proof of evolution on a macroscale."
      See above.
"And there are science in the Holy Quran."
There is a mix of the knowledge people had acquired up until the time of mohammed writing the text and erroneous claims made by mohammed in that text. One question: exactly where does the sun set?

@Wyeil Arbukle Respecting your right to unbelief is *NOT* the same as never trying to convince you that their beliefs are true.

@Wyeil Arbukle If you tell people to stop or leave you alone, and they don't care, then they are not respecting *you,* which is far more important than your beliefs. I completely agree with you that they shouldn't do that.
Arguments for the truth of something is not brainwashing. That's a childish way to look at things.
Good intentions make it literally impossible for it to be selfish, even if you don't like what they are doing.

*Seriously the assumptions here are absurd.* First if your going to talk about *_"ANGELS"_* produce merit worthy evidence for their existence. Second you ask people to read the Quran, other Muslims tell me that to truly understand the Quran you need to read it in it's original language Arabic. So in fairness I would also have to read other religious scriptures, e.g. the Vedas, the Bible, the Torah, the Buddhist scriptures, the Zoroastrian scripture, Shinto scriptures...etc in their original language. so please forgive me but I'm still learning Hebrew, Sanskrit, Pali, Greek, Japanese...etc.
Given what is at stake as theist claim, our eternal fate rest on what we believe, e.g. get it wrong and be condemned to an eternity of suffering or get it right and enjoy an eternity of joy. I can only assume that Omar has read *ALL* religious scriptures given the gravity of our fate
Do you see the dilemma one faces about the absolute truth claims that are mutually exclusive, i.e. if one religion is correct the others cannot be. And the only way to know which, if any, is true is to learn the language of each of the religious scriptures and study them. I cannot imagine how many decades it would take to learn all the languages of the original holy scriptures religions and then read the respective scripture for a truly comparative study, one would also need to study science(maths, cosmology, biology, genetics, chemistry, Newtonian physics and quantum physic) in order to understand atheist perspective?
Omar claims to have arrived at his conclusion after a *LONG* intellectual, spiritual struggle, he doesn't look old enough to have made a truly comprehensive comparative study...

The guy who made this silly video has deliberately chosen mis-translations of the Quran to try to cover up its inadequacies. The term "derived light" to refer to the moon is not in the Quran. It was inserted into a modern English translation to make it look consistent with science. Why would it have given a more solid reason to believe? The primary claim is that if God had not written it then it would contain errors. Firstly, that is an unfalsifiable proposition.
How are you able to determine that a God has done anything?
What justifies the claim that humans cannot write a book without errors?
Even if both claims are true, what is the verification that the God that is the author is the same God the book describes?
What is the standard being used and the methodology to determine whether or not the book has errors and contradictions? We both know that there is not universal consensus on this, there are critics and there are apologists.
This alone should reveal that this video contains no valid reason to conclude Islam is true or that any God at all is real. The test provided can show neither.

The things mentioned in this video is indeed mind boggling & has made me a bit more hopeful but... The main reason I can't fully trust Islam yet is because of the homophobia & sexism mentioned in the Quran. I believe as human beings we have the right to judge things based on both a scientific viewpoint & your Idealism. & If a religion doesn't *actually* practise respecting everyone despite the differences in races/genders/sexualities, then how can I believe in such a thing as a human being, having 'humanity' in me...
I really just want a logical explanation to this, cuz as I said before, I don't want to abandon my religion which I've practised for my entire life. So please do share your thoughts on this. U Don't know how much it means to me...

You would understand why homesexual is forbidden & why differ way between men & women. In Islam men & women hve their own role & it is to complete each other. There is no such thing as sexism. You should learn & study more get to the ground with sincere heart looking for God. Remember this. You would find the answer. You would feel hesitant if your desire is your God.

It's all about giving, nothing else! It is not only about science or rationality, but its especially about kindness and gentleness. If you want to prove the existence of god by logic, you will always have an unanswered question, always. Seek answers through the heart, not through the brain, it's fundamental. Faith is believing and the result are miracles. Logic is understanding from a human mind, Science affirms both logic, and faith.
I am Christian, miracles happen within Christianity that are caused by humans with Gods approval. Miracles do not happen within Islam, its just inshallah and hope for the best. *Why Should I Become Muslim?*
That is one of the greatest questions that a non-Muslim can ever ask him/herself:
“Why should I become a Muslim?”
Truth be told, all humans are born in a natural state of Islam, called the fitrah . It is the parents, or legal guardians, of the newborn who decide the path of religion that the helpless soul will be brought up to recognize as their faith.
However, for many of those newborns brought up as non-Muslims, the fitrah will be a constant force that gently pulls and incessantly prods him or her to question their faith, search for answers and seek out the true religion of God.
As a convert to Islam for going on 18 years, I too felt the pull of my fitrah as a non-Muslim. I was raised as a non-practicing Catholic in a family that only pulled the Bible out on special occasions. It wasn’t until I ventured out on my own as a freshman in college, living on campus, that I felt my own fitrah pulling me back to my original state of Islam.
If you are a non-Muslim considering the religion of Islam, then you know exactly of what I speak. You feel an insatiable pull to the religion of Islam, but are unsure of how to proceed or are perhaps worried about the changes that switching your faith might bring. There are countless reasons why someone should become a Muslim and here are just a few that will,
Insha’Allah , illuminate your journey to Islam.
    Making the Connection
As mentioned previously, you were born in a natural state of Islam. So, if you think about it, you were already a Muslim at one point in your life! When someone connects to their natural state of Islam, for which he or she was created, an overwhelming and indescribable sense of peace takes over from that very first Shahadah .
It is only through the religion of Islam that a human can truly connect with our Creator. Look around you. Whether you look in your own community, family or even the television screen - there is a massive disconnect between non-Muslims and their Creator evident in our world today.
The side effects of that disconnect are evident in everyday society in the form of crime, lewdness, vice, bullying and the like. Once a human denies his/her fitrah and blindly follows a religion other than that of Islam, chaos and a sense of hopelessness prevails. Humans, by their very nature, are pulled back towards their Creator. And each of us possesses a free will to either heed the call or ignore it.
A few years ago, I met a single mother online who was divorced and was an Atheist. Her daughter was in elementary school and had never been around Muslims or even heard much about the religion of Islam. Then one day, she came to her mother and declared that she wanted to become a Muslim. Her mother supported her decision, even when she began wearing the hijab. Not soon after, the little girl’s 6-year-old brother also became a Muslim. Clearly, the fitrah of both these blessed children was hard at work.
A Balance of Right and Wrong
One of the first things you learned in kindergarten class was most likely The Golden Rule, “To do unto others as you would have others do unto you.” It was a pretty easy rule to follow when you were young and the most pressing issue of the day was sharing paste or borrowing crayons from a classmate.
However, these days, the balance of right and wrong is often skewed in favor of worldly gains such as wealth and power. Only through the religion of Islam is mankind called to account for his actions. The Quran and the Sunnah of Muhammad (peace be upon him) are blessings from Allah Almighty that completely and perfectly guide mankind to a life in accordance with Islam that does not transgress the bounds of humanity and holds each soul accountable for both good and bad deeds.

i am a muslim and i think this speech is really poor, let me explain :
( sorry for my english )
There is nothing in this video that makes non-believers thinking about the truth, there is nothing deep... it's only verses that we compare with scientific discoveries as if the Quran ( word of God ) had to submit to the science explanations. And here i am not saying that science is wrong or scientist are liers.......
The only thing we can say about science and religion is that science is just explaining HOW things work but know WHY they work. For example, a scientist can tell you HOW the earth turns around the sun but not WHY. Ther is a difference between the "HOW" ( that humans can discover ). And the "WHY" that only a deep and sincere reflection can understand. And then God gives you faith if he wants
This kind of speech is almost useless, it's a sort of "bonus" for those who are really messed up in their faith and want more trust in god and his messenger. But humanity didn't always lived in the 20-21th century so how did ancient people came to islam if they had no access to this new science knowledge ?

But if you follow the text book to the science, you can prove every idea in it for yourself, and even possibly go on to discover new ideas that actually work in the world we live in. As an example, the word "Nur" does not mean "reflected light". It literally means "light". Allah is described as "Nur" in the Qur'an, and I'm sure any and all Muslims will agree that Allah is not a mere redflected light.
Ergo, the Moon is called "a light". No scientific miracle here. It's not wrong, though, if you just take the verse as being a little vage, or just focused on the Moon's practical function.

    17. Allah ˹alone˺ caused you to grow from the earth like a plant.
    18. Then He will return you to it, and then simply bring you forth ˹again˺.

@Czterdziestysiódmy Just because you havent seen god then doesnt mean god isnt real. A living organism cannot be created without a creator. A higher being had to create you in order for you to exist. We cant just exist out of thin air my friend. Prove me wrong please.

@Czterdziestysiódmy You simply cannot because you dont have any proof about your statement. You cant refute God. But you do you just dont say something is false based on your opinion. The "Darwin" theory or w.e its called, has been debunked and totally absurd.

@Czterdziestysiódmy Dude all im saying you cant dissprove god. Who created you then? The law of verification? Dont need a law to understand what verification means. No one has proof, all im saying is you logical illitrate is that for a dependent being to exist then there has to be an independent being that creates it. Right? You cant simply say god doesnt exist. You have no proof either!!!

If you wanna believe in something then you arent able to look at things objectively. Thats the power of people like me, I dont believe in anything so I am able to see the bigger picture better. But yeah, as long as you dont hurt anyone or force your beliefs on anyone I am all for it, for most people it is a way to feel better and believe that there is something after death which must be quite a comfort. So to conclude, believe in whatever you want to believe in but again, dont use religion as an excuse to hurt anyone and dont force your religion on other people. Not that I am saying that it was happening in the video
