Fishing on My New Intex Challenger K1 Inflatable Kayak - I'm a newbie fisherman

  • I recently took up fishing and quickly developed a longing to get to spots I couldn't reach. So, after watching many reviews, I bought the Intex Challenger K1 inflatable kayak. There weren't a whole lot of fishing videos with it. I think it's excellent for low budgets. I leave the seat cushion deflated for more stability, only inflating the back cushion. It's got a 220lb weight limit. Bought it for $90 from Amazon. Don't mind my amateur fishing skills. I'll get there. Feel free to leave a tip.
    *I work for the company that owns the property where that dock is.
    **on my second day, I got my treble hooks caught up in the kayak netting all the way in the front. It was a small disaster because I couldn't reach to undo it. I recovered but be mindful of that.
    My rods:
    A Walmart Shakespeare Reverb for $15.
    An old Ugly Stick off Craigslist for $8 (it has a Sedona 2500FB reel).
    5-27-24 UPDATE! I ordered the NRS Kuda 106 inflatable kayak. The Intex Challenger is officially retired for me.

    Fellow newbie fisherman here, just picked up the same kayak (my first one ever!) to go river fishing with my friends. Glad to see you having a good time with it, gotta say it’s inspiring! Very excited to hit the water now.

      Very cool. Hey it's a small process inflating and deflating but worth it. I am never able to get nicely folded until I get home. I blow it up and hose it off. I aim a fan on it in the garage to dry off a bit. The I let the air out and let it sit until I can pack it up.

    Wow a perch and a pickerel off the bat?? This was very inspiring. I bought the same kayak last week and registered it last night to finally try it out this weekend. Scared to fish with the hooks but like you said… there’s just some spots you wanna get to that you can’t get from shore. Thanks for taking us along on the trip, awesome vid 😁

      The hooks sort of just bounce off that durable kayak material. But you really want to be careful of getting your hook in the netting while out there. Enjoy!

      @@sdriza I just looked it up and turns out some states require it, though some also vary on whether there's a motor. D.C., Ohio, and Delaware are some that require registration. It wasn't necessary here in NJ, happy to say.

      @@sdriza In Ontario Canada we don't have to register a kayak but if a motor is used on it then you need a pleasure craft license. This is for all motorized watercraft used on the water.

    Great video man, one thing that i do with this kayak is i put a small folded tarp infront under the net so i can put fish there and it also protects the front of your kayak against your fishing hook

    I had my K1 on the River Ancholme yesterday.... great fun. Never thought about a spot of fishing while i'm at it...... I'm thinking, catch a big an and you suddenly have a speed boat

      I just looked up that river - nice! Yeah if you catch a 3lb'er, you'll be dragged along for sure. But here in southern New Jersey (in between Philadelphia, Atlantic City, and the state of Delaware) significant sized fish are hard to come by unless you fish saltwater. The small ones, though, do pull you to face them in a subtle manner.

    Fishing on a kayak looks awesome. Just a tip though dude, you shouldn't wear jeans in case you capsize because they will weigh you down and will make it very difficult to swim.

    Wow solid perch catches! I’m thinking about getting one of these kayaks since I can’t find any lakes with good bank spots. Would you definitely recommend it? A little worried about the durability and poking a hole with a hook.

    • @kimharman9402
      @kimharman9402  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not really a problem with hooks piercing the material. It's pretty tough. It's got that netting, though, in the front and I accidentally caught my trebles on there. I couldn't bend forward far enough to unhook them. That was a real pain and I ended up cutting some net to get them. But I've really been enjoying this kayak. It's not great like a hard kayak. But it gets you out there enjoying the lake. And you can easily store it away. Who knows how long it will last. But it's been fun, so far.

    good job! im thinking of buying this kayak for fishing, but i have a question. how is the storage on it? i want to hold 3 rods and a bag with it

    • @kimharman9402
      @kimharman9402  ปีที่แล้ว

      There is virtually no storage. There is only the netting up front to put things under. Keep in mind that this kayak is only a cheap way to get out on the water (when I purchased this it was only $90). I now know in the near future I want a NRS Pike inflatable.

      The Challenger K2 is basically the same kayak but made for two people. If you just use the one seat in it you'd have plenty of storage space.

    • @kimharman9402

      As a matter of fact, it is quite snug at the feet. My feet have to turn a little sideways. This is not too uncomfortable for me that it takes away the enjoyment. I forget about it in the first minute of paddling off. My legs are not too cramped. I am 5' 10", 184lbs.

    What does it feel like catching a fish in this kayak? I mean is it stable enough to fight the fish?

    • @kimharman9402
      @kimharman9402  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh yeah it is definitely stable enough; the kayak will turn towards the fish on the hookset but not in an unstable manner. It does get uncomfortable sitting in after a couple hours. I'll be upgrading to an NRS Kuda this year now that I'm ok with the inflation/deflation. Also, the slightest breeze pushes it. I bought a mushroom anchor - haven't tried it yet.
