  • Onions, safe or toxic to dogs? Toxic!
Dried, powdered, liquid, cooked, or raw forms of onion are all toxic to dogs by not only causing inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, leading to signs like drooling, abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea but, more importantly, damaging and destroying the cell membranes of the dog's red blood cells causing them to burst open.
Red blood cells are needed to carry oxygen throughout the body, so when these cells are destroyed, important organs like the brain, heart, kidneys, and liver do not get enough oxygen which could lead to pale gums, red-colored urine, kidney damage, collapse, and even death!
Medical treatment includes inducing vomiting and administering activated charcoal, but if ingestion took place more than 2 hours ago or extensive red blood cell destruction occurred, the dog may need to be hospitalized to receive intravenous fluid therapy, oxygen supplementation, and sometimes even a blood transfusion.

Does this apply to garlic as well? i once watched a video that recommended raw garlic and they said that the damaging one was the powder garlic used for seasoning.

The truth is that nobody should ever eat raw onions. Very difficult to digest.
We can all agree that neither canines or primates are complete herbivores.

Was the onion cooked? Only a herbavore could digest it so raw and easily.
