Good stoppage by Hazzard. Vonzell was a good fighter in a tough era for the division. As for Michael? Only a handful of light heavy’s in history could of beaten him.

I wish Vonzell would comment on what happened that night

Vintage Spinks Jinx... incredible how aggressive Michael was in this one.

Poor Vonzell. An early day Joey Gamache..... Always getting spectacularly knocked out

Vonzell was like a softer punching version of Tommy Hearns. He didn't throw the up jab from the hip granted but the left hook to body and head are very similar. Some footwork similarities and the general way they shape up very similar.Unfortunately no equalising right hand for vonzell, imagine if he did!!

Spinks/Saad should have happened right after this. ABC wanted it. But Saad decided to take a voluntary defense against Braxton. Big mistake.

Wow !!!! I did not know this . I agree who the hell was Matt Franklins/Saad Muhammad manager, what a idiot.
It’s like shooting yourself in the foot, he should have had two big money fights with Spinks. No money in fighting an unknown beast of a fighter Braxton . in my humble opinion it was the beginning of the end for Saad

@@ptrollan Yeah they really underestimated Braxton. Saad did not have to fight him. He should have gone straight to Spinks or fought a known mediocrity like Mustafa Wasaja or Jerry Celestine. Spinks went on to defend against both of those guys in 1982.

Saad did get $425,000 for the first Braxton fight and $350,000 for the rematch. He would have gotten at least 1M for a unification fight with Spinks. I don't think he would have beaten Spinks but I don't think he would have taken the amount of punishment he took against Braxton. It's a very different matchup stylistically.

Nah…I think Saad thought he was taking an easy fight with Braxton. He was sad ly mistaken. At this point, fighting Spinks would have been a big money fight, but it would’ve meant certain defeat for Saad. Saad had been struggling in his fights leading up to Braxton…with Jerry Martin and Vonzell Johnson. Saad tended to have particular trouble with taller light-heavies…like Vonzell Johnson and Yaqui Lopez. Spinks was another tall light-heavyweight who was awkward on top of that…along with one punch KO power in both hands. I don’t believe Spinks would’ve KO’d Saad, but I could see him beating him over 15 rounds by a wide margin.

Hazzard tapped Vonzell on the arm and butt and he thought he was breaking them...that's why he took a step back and started lowering his hands. Spinks jumped right on him with that right hand and put him in dreamland. It's a shame it ended that way. Hazzard was very full of himself at this time when in the ring. He stopped many fights early and his command in the ring was slowly slipping into involvement. A boxing ref should be as invisible as possible during a fight. I think Hazzard was at the point where he loved intervening whenever he could, especially when fighters clinched...it gave him a chance to show his stuff.

I gotta disagree. I always thought Hazzard was one of the better refs in the business. You never saw near-death experiences with him in the ring like you did with, say, Tony Perez. As far as this fight is concerned, you can hear him say, “Punch out, let him out.” The cardinal rule in boxing is “protect yourself at all times.” I think it was a good stoppage. Otherwise, Johnson probably would’ve gotten the treatment Spinks dishes out on Mustapha Wassaja.

Vonzell would smoked Spinks if he fought him in his prime. Vonzell was avoided like the plague in his prime.
