The Hillman Imp was built by Ship Builder's. Served by Ravenscraig. I mind learning the train route from Cumbernauld to Glasgow passing Ravenscraig&Gartcosh.
I remember when these were still a pretty common sight on the roads, late 70's early 80's. My dad had a light blue Hillman imp van, that had holes in the floor. You would get wet feet if you went through a deep puddle. God how safety standards have changed, for the better thankfully.
The car that could have rivaled the Mini, in many respects the Imp was very advanced and they were great fun to drive, but build quality was poor on early one at a factory that was brand new with an untried and troublesome work force, that beautiful example looks like a Mk1 with the strip speedo...A well sorted Imp was a crackin' car.
My dad had the exactly the same as the one for sale here. Ours was fun but sadly let down with the engine overheating when going up hills. We had to stop two thirds up to let the engine cool down. Didn't bother my dad too much but my sister and i sat in the back felt the heat travel through the seats and make our lives hell lol
You posted two Hillmam Gimps now.. So there must be a demand for these horrible cars. I worked on one of these and hated every second. I changed the clutch on it. Remembering how I dragged the engine out of the back resting it on a trolley jack. Totally pointless to replace the clutch, it was simply an exercise in futility in-between head gasket issues. Why don't these horrors simply fade away ? If I had the money, I would buy this car and beat it with a branch Basil Fawlty style and bury it in a large hole in the earth. :-) Oh the JOY... And you dare to show me the engine, you cheeky devil )))))
In 1972my parents bought a 1966 model the Singer version just after I started learning to drive .nice car,

The radiator was obviously furred up or externally blocked up with debris..Maybe ignition timing was too far advanced also
Did he put the heater on full blast to help cool it ?
Perhaps you could feature a bond 875 in the near future? Imp engined, as I’m sure you know.
Always looking for the next car thank you for your comment!
