Uhhh.....thank you so much for sharing. I left the Fremont Bay area in 2010 for school. Since then my family have have moved to the north east and still in sf. I can recall southland as a baby with the birds in a floor to ceiling cage. New Park mall is where I spent most of my teen years . in nyc we dont have malls. I miss them.
Southland Mall was where teenagers went on the weekends to check things out. I remember, "Meet me at the Birdcage!" That was the meeting spot. And the skating rink was so fun! And Christmas time the malls were crazy! Yeah I miss those days too. The world is a different place now. Thank u for this look back.
Thanks for sharing this update on the 2 Bay Area malls. I have been to Newpark Mall a couple times to visit relatives in Union City. It was nice mall. My sister would meet up with me and we would have coffee outside and play the giant chessboard. Years ago they had a decent food court. Haven’t been there since Covid. So glad you gave us an update on how the mall is doing. Many malls are struggling especially since Covid unfortunately. And we are more reliant on shopping online these days. Sad to hear. Many of us are on a budget too. Our wages haven’t kept up with the inflation and rising costs of everything. So we resort to shopping at discount retailers like Walmart or Target, or even Dollar stores. Good video! Like the music on the background. Great choice! 👍
Awesome video! Thank you for the throwback 💯🤜I used to Ice skate at Southland Ice arena.⛸️ I was wondering if you had any pictures of the old Ice arena or any one who does.
Unfortunately no and sadly that was way before my time. Would be awesome to find those though. What year exactly did they took out the ice skating rink at the Southland mall?
@@mjmmorales Yeah sounds about right. I was born in 87 and unfortunately missed out on that. I believe a lot of the malls in America back then had ice skating rinks. Which was seeing in George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead featured. I guessed that’s how I learned back then that was a thing.
@@rjvoorhees8786 You're so right about all the ice skating rinks being inside malls. The Southland ice rink was my home rink. But I remember having many competitions at the sun valley Mall Ice arena in Concord, California. The hilltop Mall in Richmond California. Oh and I can't forget fashion Island in San Mateo, California. 🤔They need to take the old Sears in Southland and turn it into an ice skating rink ⛸️👍
@@mjmmorales Hell yeah that be cool bring it back. Of course it will never be like the glory days but at least try to bring Southland back alive again. Not sure about Newpark that mall is very sad when you step inside it. The food court is almost completely dead. Only two spots opened unbelievable. Which is the Japanese sushi place and smoothie or ice cream place I think it is. It’s only matter of time before all of it is closed. They knocked down half the mall to put a Costco where the old JCPenneys was and some other stores use to be like Spencer’s. Like we need another Costco. 🤦♂️

Southland was my childhood mall. My favorite store was the Sanrio store that was down by the food court.

I know the ice rink was put in 1972 Right next to Liberty house. I believe 1985 or 1986 is when they sadly removed it
