Stop early enough to set up camp, cook, eat, cleanup before dark.
While all that is possible with a headlamp, it's way way mo' easier before dark.
    Headlamp is a necessay item.

Covered well. 👍🏽 My input for the tent guys. Get one of those cheap blue/silver emergency blankets like we use at the hospital. Lay it on the ground under your tent. You’ll be surprised how warm it is on bitter cold nights.
    Baby/booty wipes a must.
Set up comms ahead of time. If you don’t have Bluetooth comm between riders, know the route.
    Lastly, don’t crash.

Very good! I’ve been riding and camping for 50 years or so. I’d like to add a couple of suggestions. First, a wool sleeping bag liner is extremely comfortable and gives you some extra warmth if needed. A quality camp pillow is a game changer (I use to use my jacket). Also I use an Antigravity Micro Start that I can jump start a bike or car and it can charge all my devices with. Keep the spare key in a jacket pocket. Carry a Spot locater or Inreach.

#1 First Aid Kit. Just the one thing I carry in my tank bag. Also in case no trees a small tent.

    • @MotoGiant
      @MotoGiant  5 วันที่ผ่านมา

most 1st aid kits are simply expensive band aid bags, so I make my own - I also think that goes into the incidentals/toiletries category too (more for comfort) Unless you are into the whole survival/wilderness thing, there are not a lot of "essential" items you can carry to keep someone alive - maybe I will make a video on 1st aid? I once carried a tent, but a tarp works just as well 9/10 times as I have come to learn.

    • @dustyhobomotoadventure
      @dustyhobomotoadventure 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

I agree on a store bought kit. Mine is a heavy bag of stuff i put together. A small tent may be a luxury, just call me needy.

@@dustyhobomotoadventure hey bro, you gotta sleep, and whatever you need to make that happen - I just need a good mat/pad, and tarp if it is moist. We should do a collab on 1st aid if you are interested?

      First Aid
I carry a few bandaids, Neosporin (generic), generic meds like ibuprofen, Benadryl, alki seltzer, antiacid chews.
      In my toiletries pouch.
For my old wore out body.
PLUS a sealed adventure pack of major blood stopping stuff (quickclot, gauze, etc).
Also a CAT (windlass tourniquet) & an Israeli bandage for major trauma needs like a road crash (mostly intended for others😮).
see the most excellent "Two Nerds Meet In A Forest" video.
      TENT
I've done the tarp thing, even carried a bug tent (fist sized bundle) for awhile to set up under a tarp.
While bulky, a free standing 2P tent is also a handy BUG FREE place to stash your riding gear, etc while camping in a hammock.
      Free standing for simplicity.
It's also a fact that if there's no trees for a hammock, there's no trees for a tarp either and while I have slept in a tarp taco, it sucketh.
      Extra weight? Yep
      Extra bulk? Yep
I hate it for Big'un (Super Tenere'), but an extra 5-6lbs ain't that much.
I carry an insulated sleep pad too, in case I do wind up pretending to be a "ground dweller savage©". (also works for cold nights when the Hennessy Super Shelter under cover + insulation isn't enough).
By the way, I'm NOT a minimalist.
My backpacking days are behind me now.
I will carry stuff for what to keep a crippled up old fart (me) comfortable. 😊
If I start camping off the XT again, I'll minimize

You hit all the important things. As far as keys go, I have 2 sets of spares. One reasonably easy to get at on the bike and the second deep in my luggage. If you lose a key and you only have 1 spare you no longer have a spare. Yes, I have lost 2 keys for a Givi topbox one trip lol. I had a spare spare.

Great video, will keep reviewing it! I use under armor heat gear year round. In the summer the sweat sits in the tiny tiny mesh and keeps me cool. In the cold winter I wear several layers and still sweat and that works ok as well. Really like using those as a base layer, then just put gear over those.

Great stuff! My on body kit after 500k miles and 30 years. Base. Merino only. Underwear, socks, t shirt, long tops, and bottom. Mid, a mid weight puffer. Top, Klim Merakesh. Bottom, Fjalraven Keb1000 with knee inserts. The only pants I have on a trip. Rain, Aerostich top and bottom. Gloves, farm store ropers, and a warm ski glove. Lunch lady gloves go inside for rain or warmth. Done.

Online signups are probably like planning events where 595 of your Facebook friends sign up and the same 13 people show up in real life. We aspire to do more than we actually do, but that's much worse when trying to organize people online to do things in the real world.
I've been camping for over 50 years and most of that transfers to motorcycle camping. A lot has changed in half a century. The gear is much better, and I no longer have the desire to go winter camping.
I've been a layering fan since the 70's but it's a bit different for moto camping, and I think even more important. I only recently took my motorcycle layering to the level it needs to be. I always had mild contempt for Klim fan boy fashionistas, but after getting my Marrakesh jacket and Zephyr wind shell last year, I'm now a Klim fan boy. The motorcycle jacket is actually comfortable enough that I wear it around camp. My metabolism has decreased with age and I now get cold easily when I'm not active, making it more challenging to stay warm in camp. I'll sometimes sit inside my sleeping bag. It seems that most people build a fire for warmth but I'm far too lazy for that and I hate the smoke getting into my clothes and on my skin, so I need more insulating clothes. A heavy balaclava is great. We lose a lot of heat from our heads. Keeping your head warm makes all of you warmer.
Part of my enjoyment of camping is having the knowledge and exercising the skills to be comfortable in a primitive environment. It's not conquering nature, but rather the culmination of millennia of humans evolving the intelligence to adapt to our environment to be safe and comfortable. I guess I'm only half joking when I tease tent campers about being grubby ground dwelling troglodytes. 😀

Hey Don, that was a really good video. It’s obvious you’ve got a lot of time and money invested in motorcycle camping and your advice is much appreciated. You might have a future in outdoor clothing modeling, LOL. You’re really finding your rhythm in communicating your thoughts on these videos. You rattled off a lot of good points right then, and it appeared you were free-styling and having a good time doing it. I hope your videos reach a lot of people and you grow your subscriber base and channel. Trash bags and method of keeping up with trash between sites is all I would add to must have items. Zip ties, bungees , pull straps and paracord, Duct tape, JB Weld. Easy to pack , low weight, lets you fix enough to limp home if stuff breaks. Very similar kit to my own. Thanks for another great vid.

And yes I carry and additional 1st aid kit for my bike n gear too - but sometimes it is too much?

It was cold here today, 42 windy, rain. I did 50 miles on the Twin. Had an adventure with a great Piranese at the end of a dead end road, no where to turn back had to pull up into this dirt driveway to spin bike around. Big white dog slow barking right against my leg, unintentionally trespassing. Cattle grate made out of 4x4s just flopping around 6 inches apart. Sometimes exploring is semi-dangerous, and I love every second of it.

If you haven't tried Alpaca wool socks I highly recommend them. They are a game changer, warm in the cold but not hot in the summer, wick moisture away to keep your feet drier and they are antimicrobial so they don't stink allowing you to pack fewer socks.
I ordered a bunch from Willow because they were much cheaper than the competition. The company is legit and I'm not getting paid for my endorsement.

    Layering
I carry an electrically heated jacket liner.
    Low bulk, max warm.
A windproof & waterproof liner for over the heated liner and for camp.
In Spring, Fall or winter, an extra fleece liner over the heated liner and under the windproof shell.
Glove covers + extra gloves + since I wear unlined elkskin gloves, wool glove liners.
Hippo hands when it's cold &/or wet, nothing works as good as hippohands and grip heaters.
I usually wear my 'stich unless it's really really hot, since it's also my raingear, I carry a mesh jacket then also.
