Watching this on September 1, 2020... you filmed this just before our current "plague" of corona virus. This is timely for me, because I'm 73 years old and I'm spending most of my time alone in my cluttered house. It's been cluttered for all of the 41 years I have lived here, raised three kids here, outlived my husband here. It filled with things that belonged to people who no longer live here and IT IS TIME for me to free my space to breathe, whether I live another five years or another 25. Thank you for showing me the way.

@@jodyben-david6188 Thanks for asking! Most of the house is much improved - if you don't count the garage and the shed.
I still have several boxes of stuff that I need to attack with no mercy... boxes of DOOM?... but the rooms that I live in are much much airier and better, and it really does feel good!
The most difficult things to make decisions on are old paper documents, and photos. The documents are just slowed by making the decision, "what do I NEED to keep". And I know, everyone says "scan the photos" but even if I do that, I don't want the throw out the originals. They have tangible value to me. I just have to, again, be merciless and find that dividing line that marks what I can release.

Wow that this message happened to come forth right before the corona virus popped into the world as we knew it. WOAH. At first when this amazing tell on how to choose what to keep (so helpful, by the way) was suddenly shifted to a Bible story share, I was kind of confused as to "why?" and I've never heard a bible share so far on the content I've seen on this channel. I almost clicked it off, to be frank, but something told me to hold on a moment and right then it became more apparent as to why it was helpful to me to listen. So amazing on the timing.

I read this quote recently..."Decluttering is always about forgiveness." Yes, you have to forgive yourself and anyone else that has contributed to your stuff or your guilt. (That's from a book called "Minimalism Room by Room" by Elizabeth Phillips, I believe.)

Thanks for sharing that! I never thought of it that way. My clutter contains a lot of guilt, money I shouldn't have spent on things I didn't need, the result of over buying because if I had some, I wanted more & wasn't satisfied. I now realize that there was a deeper issue that caused me to do these things & so I can be aware of it & do better going forward. I need to forgive myself & move on. You can't cry over spilled milk is an old saying, mine is you can't cry over spent money, just let it go.

I tell myself that God works in mysterious ways and maybe he knows someone that needs what I am donating and their only way to afford is to buy below cost at Goodwill etc. So by donating things that are in great shape it was not a bad buy for me rather my acting on a feeling God lead me to as he knew I would enjoy a couple of times and would then donate for the next person he leads to the item. It makes parting with nearly new or new items I bought fun to donate and makes me not feel so guilty for buying the item.

Amen, Ms. SFDk, and think of this too, if you donate to Salvation Army, they give the most to everyone and there is never any fraud......and their things sell for less to those in need and they help stop human trafficking........I am not connected with them, but when I donate there - I feel like I have helped someone for sure........yes, and we can pray over the things that the right person finds the right item........I agree with your idea of not feeling as guilty......lol.

This is so true! I’ve been going through my kids clothing and had bins upon bins to go to a thrift store but my heart just didn’t feel right about donating to a thrift store for some reason. Over the last week the Lord has shown me several Moms who need just what I have! Each one needed a specific size or gender and I was able to separate what they needed and deliver it to them. What a joy! And now I’ve made a new friend through Facebook that I’ll be meeting for coffee this week!
I’m not saying this to get down on thrift stores. I love thrift stores! They’re my weakness! (Which is probably part of why I didn’t want to even go near one to donate my stuff!) It just felt right to give to ladies I care about and can see the impact my giving had on them.

In every sphere of life the beginning of wisdom is fear of the Lord. Even when we declutter our house, it begins with realizing there are more important persuits than collecting stuff (such as having time to study the Word of God!) Thank you for your reminder. The Word of God is a living thing which always goes forth in power when spoken. Thank you.

I love Dawn and her message about decluttering and simplifying our lives. I am brought up in an atheist home and often stay clear of the videos with both the sisters, because I feel there is a hidden agenda. But now I notised that she «warned» us and told us that she would put her pastor-hat on. That was the thing that made me listen throug the whole video without cringing. I think this is authentikly who you are, and that there is no hidden agenda, so thank you for that. I have listened to it twise now, and even thoug I knew I could stop when the pastor-hat came on, I kind of Found it interesting what the pastor had to say too. When did we (as a nation apparently) become unable to bear the "horrible burden" of hearing something we don't agree with??? I am a Christian meat eater and I don't have any problem listening to an atheist or a vegan speak on other subjects and include such philosophical side conversations. If you find part of what someone says valuable but disagree on other points why would that bother you so? I just don't get it. Take what you want and disregard the rest, practice maturity.

    • @Sunnie26

It is because those who are of a faith other than Christianity are often told we are wrong and not whole until we accept Jesus into our lives. That can be very insulting. It says that other religions are not valid-that they are somehow less than or wicked for not believing in Jesus. I assure you, plenty of the world has religions that are whole and complete. Not having Jesus as part of a religion does not make it wrong. It’s literally not in their belief system. That being said, I never feel preached at by Dawn or her sister. They are very clear about their faith and mission and present it respectfully as their own beliefs.

I wish I could love this video a thousand times over. My husband and I were literally just discussing today a beautiful large decorative glass bowl that we received as a gift, years ago. We have a very small home and don't currently have a spot for it but don't want to get rid of it because we really like it and want to see if we can use it in our next home. He told me to put it back in its box... yes we still have the box... and store it in the basement for now, which is already FULL. We have 3 young boys and probably wouldn't use it until we're empty nesters because it would be silly for us to put it in a prominent place before then. Lol. You just convinced me that it's time to let it go because for one, who knows if we'll even have a place for it in our next home and two, it's not a practical piece for us anyway in the stage of life we're in. I could go on with reasons 3, 4 and 5 but I won't. Ciao bowl! ... and everything else like you.

One thing that I found was after I purged more than 75% of that stuff that just wasn’t fitting into this season of my life, I actually felt a huge wave of peace and had a little burst of motivation and creativity to finish my oldest son’s baby scrapbook that I had never finished. This is exactly how I have been decluttering the past few weeks and it is so liberating when making decisions!!! I have 3 huge boxes of really nice stuff I would have struggled to donate before I started decluttering this way. Now in 3 days Woman's Another Chance will pick up those boxes and be able to provide a woman or several women with premium items that I just have never used or rarely used in 10 years! I still have a lot to declutter but I am already feeling more peace within myself and proud of myself for getting this far so quickly.
One point I will add, is that there are still "layers" of decluttering this way...u just get thru those layers quicker.
We have a financial goal to reach by 2024 and I just ask myself, Do I need this to complete that mission and then I tell myself..If I need this after 2024 & I truly believe in my goal, then I will be able to buy a brand new version of this item or borrow it from someone else if I need it before 2024 or if I rarely use this item....bam...like u said, GAME CHANGER!

I just thought of something as you were talking about the home schooling stuff; I could pray that the right person will find it so it could bless their family. Given that I regret the day I stopped homeschooling, it's really hard for me to give up some of the supplies that I collected, and my kids are all grown up. It's time for those things to bless someone else's lives. Seriously! But honestly, that's something that a person could do with anything that they just have a really hard time giving up. I know there were times when something would come to my mind that would really help my family and I would go to the second hand store and there it was, like magic. Heavenly Father blesses us like that. But someone else had to give it up so God could bless my family with it.

    • @gladysanderson1351
      @gladysanderson1351 4 ปีที่แล้ว

After parents have passed away, is often so difficult. A person feels like youo are wanting to keep that parent with you, and keeping their stuff is the closest to that (in your mind). My mother has been gone now for two years. My sister and I were talking about how we are realizing our parents didn't hang onto everything, and I realized that if my Mom were to come in my home, she would not encourage me to keep so much that the house would be totally cluttered. My sister and I have been considering things we have inherited, and are keeping only the things that feel right in our home. And we have memories of our parents. I am saying this here, as I can see how that situation can send a person right over the cliff to hoarding.

Has Tom developed a following since he’s been on the show doing things that are relatable to the men of the wives that watch you. I’m sorry didn’t mean to go this far. Be blessed.

My momma and grandma both have me help them let go of their items and we always come to a spot where they get anxiety about the what if I need this. Their learning to let go and trust that if they need it they can easily get it again.

I love this idea!! Gosh the analogy of traveling totally resonated with me! I have been holding onto a bunch of art supplies that were wonderful when I used them but I want to do something different now and they don't serve that desire. So I'm going to put them in a quarantine box and if I don't use them by August (when my kids go back to school) I'll get rid of them. I haven't used them in almost 3 years already. THANK YOU!!!!

Good points! When I declutter my closets and drawers, I say, if I was moving would I take this? If I think I might use it some day, I have three totes in the attic for those. Sometimes, I do and retrive one, mostly, I do not. I label the totes, so it is easy to grab in the future for my yearly yard sale.

After the steps to decluttering, I wonder what would happen if we just learned to tell our self, "NO"! I've watched several channels where they do a declutter/clean with me type of video. My thoughts are, "Did you not learn through the first cleaning out that you have too much already?" The points you both made were encouraging and constructive especially when small children are involved in purchases needed b/c they grow so fast. Last February 2019 we heard the Lord ask us if we were willing to leave it all behind if we had to do so. Of course we said yes, but I thought it was a question that wouldn't really be required of us to follow through. In March 2019 we felt compelled to go to Tennessee. We moved into a 5th wheel RV and left everything except pieces of kitchenware that would fit (which was minimal to say the least) a few clothes, etc., it doesn't take much to fill up an RV!) In September 2019 the Lord called us to Vermont...another scaling back, not to be difficult, but to teach and train us on many levels of what is coming our way. For this reason, I have seen such a self-centeredness about me that I didn't know was in me. Watching your channel has truly spoken many things to help me line up with what I believe the Lord is teaching me to help me set my focus on Him and realize what is really important: people and ministry. Thank you for your ministry. Gale Flowers

I often hear "God doesn't give you what you can't handle" and I respectfully disagree with that. I believe God allows us to experience more than we can handle so that we turn Him and rely on His strength and wisdom instead of our own. It breaks my heart to think that God needs to sometimes allow a trial to come because He misses me.

1 Corinthians 10:13 There hath no temptation taken hold of you but such as is common to man. But God is faithful; He will not suffer you to be tempted beyond that which ye are able to bear, but with the temptation will also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
He's the God who gets you out of the trial. Not the one who puts you into it.Trials and temptations are everywhere, but for those who seek Him and love Him He makes a way of escape for those that they can get out of it that it won't wholy consume them. Yes that does include seeking Him as a way out. Possibly the only way out. There is not one thing we as humans should be doing without God in it. That goes for me too.

I don’t have small kids, but I have two younger teens who still deserve a mom. I have been beating myself up, but I am reminded that God is God and He has us in his hands!
I have been working for a couple of years to pair down our home and right now nothing is out of hand. It takes just minutes for us to pick up the house and it has allowed me to actually rest while being sick. I have learned sometimes we get sick bcs we need to rest. We are not God and our bodies can only handle so much. We are supposed to depend on Him and not ourselves!!!

I love that you called out homeschooling moms at the beginning! As a homeschooling mom myself, it's easy to think "oh, this will be great for school" for EVERY SINGLE book and craft supply we own. It's as if I give school stuff an out, or an excuse that it doesn't apply to decluttering rules. And so, of course, the school room becomes the most stressful room in the house. Hi Dawn, I think your videos on decluttering and minimalism are great, and really helpful but was a little surprised that this video segued, unexpectedly, into a dialogue about the Old Testament. Although Diana opened the discussion by saying she was "putting her Pastor's hat on" as someone who lives her life (in common with many) in a thoughtful and caring way without religion, it was uncomfortable to suddenly find myself on the receiving end of a biblical sermon. If there are going to be occasions when your videos about minimalism and religion overlap in a more substantial way other than references to your church group, it may be worth considering whether the video title could indicate that. Thank you.

I wanted to keep some items that are size 3T because he never wore them or they're super cute, but he's currently wearing 4T. SO, I asked myself--Where is he going? What season is he going into? 4T for sure! However, along with the "season" of 4T comes learning math, new storybook interests, greater outdoor adventures. It's broader than just the size he's wearing now, which is all exciting stuff. This approach made it easier. Thank you!

I'm going to share this video! Thanks. The people did see the power of God; the Israelites experienced the first few plagues and so were reminded/made aware of His power too. They'd been living as slaves 400 years afterall! Culturally it was believed gods were regional, recall Pharoah never questioned God existing, just that he didn't know Him. The Israelites likely didn't know God was there in Egypt until the plagues. The trials in our lives always teach us.

I have been getting rid of a lot of stuff, but still have more to go. I just let myself go through everything every few months and each time I realize I am a different person and I get rid of something I never expected to be able to let go of 3-4 months ago. But I have never defined it so clearly as you explain it in this video. There are stuff I don't really want around anymore but I'm not ready to let go of, so I've learned to be gentle with myself as my mind becomes renewed to the person I want to be. Just yesterday I was able to gathet a box of books and remove them from my house, books that 3 months ago I thought I'd read. Now I feel so great and free!
