    Killer whales live in pods, they are maternalistic with males swimming along side their mothers for their entire lives. Each pod has it's own "language" and behaviors as well. The average life expectancy of an orca in captivity is 25-35 years, in the wild males live for 50-60 years and females live from 60 to 100 years. Also, almost all males and some females in captivity develop dorsal fin drop which almost never manifests among wild populations, the incidence of this condition in the wild is less than 1% of all animals. Most orcas in captivity die from pneumonia, although there have been significant instances of deaths attributed to non specific neurological disease. There are two sources from which captive whales originate, they are either born in captivity or they are captured, always as calves separated from their mother and pod. Orcas in captivity are not "rescues", they are apex predators that live of of fish and/or other marine mammals, depending usually upon the environment they live in and the availability of specific prey in said environment.

    Poor creatures, its like living in a cell, they are asked to repeat the tricks several times a day and 365 days a year.. despite their health condition, it must be extremely stressful for them. Grejegando, you're so right about the ANNOYING MUSIC !!

    It kills me too. I'm doing everything I can to get these places closed down. Peacefully, of course. But when I think about what they have to do endure, like you did so eloquently by putting yourself in their place in your comment, it makes me want to scream in frustration. It's unbearable. I'm glad I'm not the only one who cares. You're awesome.

      they are born in captivity and if they were let loose in the wild they probably wouldn't live to make it a year by themselves. besides there's that many bastards out there hunting whales of all species. This is a good way of protecting the species as a whole so that in generations to come other people can appreciate this magnificent mammal. But i understand what you mean... its just a shame the human race is so brutal and heartless.

    • @yrtnook
      @yrtnook 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Nat vamp
      Not all of them were born in captivity. Tilikum, Corky, Lolita and Morgan are four who weren't. The inbred ones who were, probably shouldn't be introduced in to the wild gene pool. Especially the ones who are a mix of Resident and Transient orcas. But they shouldn't be treated like circus clowns either. That's not learning to appreciate who they are. At least retire them to sea pens instead of their chlorinated bathtubs.

    • @KrayzieChrista
      @KrayzieChrista 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Nat vamp No offense but your response shows how uninformed you really are on this tragic situation. Orcas are captured and taken away from their mothers and pod mates (that they usually remain with throughout their lives in the wild) usually around the age of 2 years old (some have been younger and some have been a bit older) they are crammed into what can literally only be described as the size of a bathtub for them. Not all Orcas eat only fish like their diet consists of in captivity, some eat seals, penguins, sting rays and other kids of oceanic creatures. they also eat more than what they are fed in the marine parks on a daily basis. Another sad fact: They are deprived food in captivity if they don't preform the tricks asked of them. The only captive animals born in captivity are those born to once wild animals or the product of a captive animal born from a once wild animal. Orca whales swim up to 100 miles a day in the ocean whereas in the tanks at Sea World and other marine parks aren't even half of that. They are very intelligent creatures that have feelings just like we do, their brains are very similar to ours with the exception of the size. The capture is very traumatic for them and releasing a whale that has spent the majority of it's life in captivity can be successfully done. Keiko (the whale that played "Free Willy" in the films) was actually successfully rehabilitated and released back into the ocean. Also, just for everyone's clarification: A killer whale did NOT get it's name simply because it's a malicious brutal killer, they acquired the title because of their impeccable, uniquely creative and well thought out hunting skills. They're geniuses and should be treated as such, not treated as clowns. Sea World should be ashamed but the sad fact is that they aren't. Tilikum was brought back to do the shows just a year after the death of his trainer because he is worth lots of money due to the fact that he has sired 21 calves since his capture in the 80's and continues to make money. It's just sad.

    actually the life of a killer whale in captivity is half of what killer whales in the wild live to, seaworld lies to the public and continues to circulate this rumour to maintain their image..and actually many captive whales do display behaviour issues, some more than others (Tilikum), and many of the whales have developed different medical conditions, like really bad sunburnt skin from being so close to the water surface for so long (Keiko)...though i do agree with your last statement :)

      @figelnuget4569 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Ryan Dahn Ive read The truth about blackfish, and it had little info. Its mostly about clips in the movie when the use the wrong whale or the wrong trainer, and it doesnt go in to the actual captivity of whales. Blackfish is one movie and dosent represent anti caps, most people do alot of reseach aside from blackfish. When you strip seaworld down your left with an orca in a concrete tank, which to me is wrong.

    Killer whales should be left in the wild! Why do people think they attack trainers. Maybe because they dont like it there. Before Blackfish were put into these tanks they were able to swim 100 miles a day in the WIDE OPEN ocean. But now that they are in tanks they dont have enough freedom as they use to. These huge animals should be able to swim in a large body of water. Not some stupid tank!!

  • @RibbonsAndRedRoses
    @RibbonsAndRedRoses 11 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Tilikum is the last whale shown at the end with the dorsal fin falling all the way to the side. He did not kill 3 trainers by the way, just one. In the first incidence, a trainer had fell into the pool where Tilikum and 2 others were. At that time none of the orca were used to having humans in their pool and so they 'played' with her until she drowned. The second time, a man dived into the pool of his own free will. Tilikum was not accustomed to the man, and no one knows what exactly happened.

      Sealand's trainer slipped and fell into the orca tank but they pulled her between the three of them to the bottom, which means that I did kill her because she was submerged several times.
      In the second case of 1999, you are giving more or less the version of the facts that I argue is World. How do I get to the tank? It is possible that it has fallen as well as that Tilikum had pulled it there is something that does not close in that explanation since they did not go to the surveillance cameras that were there to record that

    They are apex predators (even sharks fear them), & ENJOY hunting-often making a family game of it. They do attack trainers, often, despite being pumped full of drugs (like anti-depressants) to suppress their natural instincts & make them calm & compliant. They also NEVER leave their family in the wild, including males, & they mate w/outsiders to avoid inbreeding. Generally speaking, orcas caught from the wild, are caught as calves, & it is VERY traumatic. . .Please form educated opinions.

    I'm pretty sure no one's over reacting, but stating their opinions on a public video open for comments and criticism. And how are people over-reacting when it's true that these animals shouldn't be here. Whether they were wild caught or captive bred, the animals itself came from the wild, and that is where it should be, not performing like a circus clown in the name of "education"

    There is alot of evidence:
    Scientific studies/experiements/theories and observations.
    Researchers such as Jane Goodall.
    Zoologists such as Marian Dawkings.
    Not to mention the history of animals turning on their keepers/trainers in circuses, zoos, etc.
    All of these and more have contributed to our understanding and questioning of how we regard and treat animals in enclosures and our general understanding..

    I also don't believe that they torture them for food, but yes, marine parks, including seaworld, DO still capture and trade wild orcas and dolphins. There are such thing as whale poachers, yes, but whale poachers do not hunt orcas.Lastly, I'm most certainly not putting this whole captivity on Seaworld, but they are a huge business that is based off of making wild animals, such as Dolphins and Orcas, perform for their profit. So really your argument is invalid.

    Even with vet care and increased space and/or enrichment: the "best quality" enclosures, zoos and related exhibits such as this...are still critiqued by zoologists, scientists, etc to be insufficient and still display signs of severe stress, boredom and psychological damage on large animals such as bears, wild cats, elephants and yes orcas and whales...I still see animals pacing, and attacking their enclosures or trainers....they have yet to be 100% "humane"

    1. Orcas attacking their trainers, even killing them (similar to tigers, bears, elephant and other animals attacking humans in zoos and other enclosures)
    2. The amount of space: always limited and nothing compared to their natural habitat and range explored in groups..
    3. Break down of family units, not just via seaworld, but zoos, circuses, the lot have a history of tearing animal families apart to exhibit a few, then breed or use them for economic gain
    4. Economic gain placed over animal needs

Its closest relative is the Irrawaddy dolphin, as told to me be my marine biologist friend who also said that although a porpoise comes under the main heading cesteacen doesnt mean its a whale either.

If I had been alive back then, I would have been against it unless they were unhealty or alone, like the person before me had said. But it still happened, but it's different now. SW is not a circus, they don't keep their animals and tiny cages and give them minimum care. The whales love to perform, if you really watched with an open mind you'd be able to see it.

    @LVskywalker Thank you megz, those vikings were expert navigators of the sea long before anyone of Europe became attuned to the sea. They were viscous and mean and known for their raids on Europe during 800-900. However, it is believed that they were the first to "discover" America almost 500 years before those flaming Spaniards. Anyways, it's named after Amerigo Vespucci most likely due to him discovering the Southern Continent of the "New World" before Columbus discovered the Northern part.

    @151megz Nope. Christopher Columbus rediscovered America for Spain. Before that, the vikings have been there, and before them, people from Asia and some believe even Australia. The British did not discover America.

    ok so if there wasnt any attack at sea world, then perhaps she felt from the air in the pool.and so she drawned(trainer of 2010), and ofcource it is a good thing to keep those baby whale and train them well. but when they came big adult fish, set them free, and by the way by setting those whale in the wild they wont die at all. they made to hunt with manners.

    these orcas could never be released to the wild because they are born and bred in captivity. they choose to do this if they didnt want to they wouldnt it not like you can force an animal that size to do something against there wil and they dont all live in one little pool. they live in multiple tanks that are huge

    @QuincyxLover Sorry, but you're not completely correct. Don't get me wrong, SeaWorld is pretty much my home and I love those whales more than anything, but they were taken from the wild because they were young and healthy looking. But on the Bright side, the only wild born whales at SW Orlando now are Tili and Katina; and we all know they both are in the best care possible and love to show off. I like your ethusiasm though =p

    @Bratny557 wow, that's a dumb comment... seriously... the only reason they get medical attention is cause of the stress levels of being kept in an environment like that.... if they do not receive medical attention while in captivity, they will die faster. Please do your homework. Seaworld might not have the intention of torturing the creature, however, ocean v.s. pool surrounded by noise pollution... no contest. Think about it Bratny557, don't take this as an insult.

    @flashback0978 technically no, but then again, domestics house cats and dogs are not wild animals. their relatives are (tigers, jaguars, cheetahs, wolfs, foxes ext.). our pet dogs and cats are not wild nor have ever been, they were bred into being domestic. birds and fish however, that's a different story.

    It's sad that people were not "aware" until the movie blackfish came out.
    Take a look at the zoos with elephants banging their heads against walls;
    chimpanzees whose knuckles are bloody and raw, trying to escape;
    lions who pace back and forth and back and forth 24/7!! It really took a
    stupid movie for people to open up their eyes?? Really??!!

    Some papers I have found are reviewed, others not so much...it varies alot.
    The link isnt working so i will msg you it if you like???
    I am trying to find an old video which examined the research of a group of mixed scientists and zoologists...no clue if it still exists, but had great info about how zoos continue to fail to provide proper care for especially larger and more intelligent animals like orcas, big cats, great apes, etc.

    @dillion3384 you got it all wrong..I love these whales and think they are amazing, but do you think I have the time to go on a boat and view them in their natural environment? as much as i hate Sea World it may be the closest I'll get to an Orca for now at least

    It is so horrible that peoples lives got lost because of SeaWorld keeping them in captivity, I am strongly an animal lover and study zoo keeping and yes i agree with everyone else saying that this animal should be let out into the wild, but these animals have had so much humuam interaction that they would never be able to survive in the wild, they don't know how to hunt now and would die from starvation and not knowing how to look after themselves

    they should stop shows with any kind of animals or any kind of living creature; what is the sense of this? it is just cruel...now they live in captivity (or even were born already in such environment); what makes worse because it is not their habitat; not their nature: they can't ever be released to the sea (they wouldn't survive).

    Eh, I still hold out hope that one day all captive whales will get tired of being captive and revolt! Continuously misbehave, kill off their trainers that are aggressive(there are a few, I've seen 'em get pissed at shows)until they are deemed too dangerous for us to capture and enslave. Honestly if they don't deserve a life, why should the people forcing them to be that way get to live? Come on, Shamu! Start taking limbs every time they get too close and teach your brothers and sisters the same!

  • @allivlicious11

    @Ambzelia89 i no people have there own opinions and my opinion does not agree with yours...... these trainers train the whales and then they give them food and love....... and shelter....... i dont think that the whales need anything more than that
