    This video is outstandingly well done my man. And that's coming from a dude who's been running a photography TH-cam channel for years. you explain it eloquently without talking too much and rambling on and the visuals and b-roll perfectly match what you're saying. You're a bloody TH-cam cinematographer. Carry on

      I know exactly who you are. I’ve watched your Rolleiflex Vs Rolleichord video a few times. (I own a rolleichord) thank you so much! Means a lot! I like your videos, not just saying that. Very genuine.
      PS, dropping a vid tonight 😋

    Super nice pictures. Diving a bit into medium and large format photography leaves me amazed how good the quality of pictures was even back then. As it turns out the low quality that we see in history books may have been due to the poor printing quality of back in the day.

    One of the great thing about shooting large format with a press camera, like the Crown Graphic, is that you can quickly take the camera out of the bag, push in the film holder and use the rangefinder for focusing. If you have enough light or film with a high enough ISO you don't need a tripod. After all, these WERE press cameras and were made for relatively quick handheld shots. You can also throw on a flash for fill flash outdoors or for portraits on the inside. I have been doing photography for over 50 years but never did large format. I had a 4x5 enlarger for decades but never used it until 6 months ago when I started to print 70-80 year old 4x5 newspaper negatives that were archived at our local community museum where I volunteer. I was blown away by the clarity and sharpness of the negatives I was printing. I definitely got bitten by the large format bug and decided on a Busch Pressman Model D. It is more compact, all metal, and has a rotating back. I see it as a sort of poor man's Linhof Technika. I have been having a ball doing both hand held shots with the rangefinder and long exposures focusing using the ground glass. At first, I almost bought a big monorail but for me a press camera was definitely the way to go. The camera has a decent amount of lens movements that I can grow with but the compactness and speed is well worth the trade off in not having some of the less used movements.

    Would you consider doing a review of the B's processing insert for the tank? This looks much simpler and more elegant than the other styles I've seen. I've got a 1943 Anniversary Speed in crackle black finish. No scratches, even the lens cap was still brightly polished when I got mine. This camera is really fast to use if you pre-set your aperture and distance, leaving the shutter speed as your variable. You can compose through the frame finder if you know your depth of field settings. No one ever criticized Weegee's technique.

      Check out my description. I linked a video to a demo of the tank, I believe it’s from the guy who made it. He has a website and makes all kinds of processing equipment. I love it. I got it cause it’s so easy to load and fits right into my process. It’s well made and given me no problems. Super easy to load in the dark.

    after reading about WeeGee (Arthur Fellig) about 40 years ago, or more, ive wanted a Graflex Press Camera. he would have used a Speed Graphic with the focal plane shutter in addition to any shutter in the lens. i literally JUST got a 1955 vintage (first year of the Crown with the Graflex top range finder) and was going to test it with 120 roll film first so i got some film backs. wrong ones!!!
    anyway, i dont process film anymore (not since 1994) so its about $6 to soup up 4x5 plus shipping and handling and the WAIT!
    still need to figure if i put the bellows at the infinity stops or bring it all the way out on the rails.
    nice work

    Great introduction, very nice video and I love the photos you made! The film holder issue you had - I think that's really common when you're starting out. I had a similar issue where it was hard to push the slide back in. I don't think it was anything to do with you removing the slide all the way - that's pretty standard - instead it's probably when you loaded the film; you didn't slot the film *under* the guide properly. Instead it was running in the same channel as the dark slide (at least on one side). That's my theory anyway and it's something that happened to me (although my darkslide was still on top).

    Aren't those dots the wire that was in front of the camera? maybe you couldn't see it through the ground glass for being so much out of focus.

    Did you also buy the B's 3D printed processor for your developing reel at 2:30? I have the processor and that helps you save even more chemicals. It's worth it.

    Hey man, cool video. I have a Crown Graphic Film Camera but it seems to be lacking the same backplate yours has that you slide the film holder under. Do you know what this part is called? Also, do you have to remove the Ground Glass after you use it to get focus? I'm new to all of this if you couldn't tell... lol

    • @morethanyoucaretosee
      @morethanyoucaretosee  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Crown Graphic came with a few different backs depending on which one you have. So it’s called a “back” or “film back”. My guess is yours is the “graflex back” which is easily removed. Mine is not. I linked a video at the bottom of my video’s description that covers each back in detail.
      No. Ground glass stays in the camera. And the film back holds the film holder against the glass.

      morethanyoucaretosee Interesting. My goal is to turn my Graflex Crown into a wet plate camera so I’m trying to figure out how to get it to accommodate a wet plate holder.

  • @waynesimon2963
    @waynesimon2963 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    There is no way a dark slide goes behind the film in a film holder unless you incorrectly put the film in first.

    Why would you ruin the beauty of a 4x5 image by throwing one of those teal-tinted Instagram filters over it? C'mon man, let the quality of 4x5 shine by bringing out the colors the way Kodak intended.

    • @morethanyoucaretosee
      @morethanyoucaretosee  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @morethanyoucaretosee
      @morethanyoucaretosee  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@griffinshapiro1982 that’s how it came out. Perhaps it could have been the setting in the Epson Software. These were just test shots. I think it’s pretty silly of you to assume I’m putting Instagram filters on my scans.

    • @griffinshapiro1982
      @griffinshapiro1982 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@morethanyoucaretosee Likely not an issue with scanning. It just looks like a Lightroom preset was used. By Instagram filter, I’m referring to the trend that has taken over insta the last few years where presets are used and blues are heavily tinted toward teal. I’d love to see the same shot with a more natural feel, bringing out the true colors.

    I was going to suggest practicing with some old (exposed/developed) film to get the knack of the loading and moving of the dark slide etc, could that possibly work for you? Saves precious expensive film but you still get the practice :)
    Beautiful video and shots :)

    The dots look like bubbles, make sure to give it a hard tap on the counter after agitating. There’s a lot more surface area on 4x5 for bubbles to stick to.
