The way Maomao, earlier in the episode, calls the courtesans sister and later mentions growing up in brothels, her mentioning that courtesans have died due ot the face powder makes it clear why it clearly dredges up awful memories for her. But I love that the anime trusts the viewer to make that connection without a clue by four on their part.

Very happy that we got Apothecary Diaries on the list, I had a feeling you'd be eating it up but I didn't expect the ep 1 analysis to go *that* hard

Was kinda worried that there wouldn't be much to talk about, but i glad this episode proved me wrong.
Maomao such a good written character, she alone would probably steal 50% of analysis time. And I wouldn't want it any other way.
Sometimes you see a recommendation for a video posted in Discord and next thing you know you're sitting on your bathroom floor mid-toothbrushing for two hours because you're enjoying someone react to Maomao. I believe the original LN revealed Maomao’s literacy purely through narration, the Square Enix manga added a chapter 1 scene of her reading a label for a random other servant, and the anime changed that servant to Xiaolan (who was previously introduced a bit later, gossiping about the curse). I approve of both of these changes.

I remember requesting this a long while ago on a video! I'm sooo glad I finally see it being studied and reacted to! In regards to checking for disease, like in modern times it *really* came down to status, wealth and clientele.
A high class brothel like the verdigris house would have taken exceptionally good care of their workers, which included regular health checks. Simply also for reputation.
The bigger hurdle was actually detecting the diseases before they developed symptoms.

There’s plenty of men who find clinginess creepy. But I think some men like clinginess cuz it makes them feel more desirable and they might have self confidence issues. It’s about the men, rather than the woman.
Women don’t like clinginess since they’re accustomed to being sexualized or objectified, hence feeling like the clinginess is suspicious. Men aren’t objectified nearly as much, so they’ll find being objectified “appealing”. But that is to say, plenty of women have self confidence issues and might feel the same way men do. They're called “pick me” girls typically.
Sadly, women kinda need to be sus to protect themselves. That’s just how it goes. That said, I’m sure they’d be ok with clinginess if they can trust them, so it’s also about trust.

Silver= because before I was me; there was another... Silver as in second place and as in mythical concepts and connections. A color choice about the Mystery of it all.
With chapters of life not year to year as separation.
Chapter Black; death was my early life. According to my parents I was found floating in pools anytime they lost sight of me and one was around. I died at 3 or 4 years old on the operating table... then the memories of after that exist. Often when remembered the back grounds are blacked out and the focus is on whatever event was remembered. Black is also a color of mystery as it conceals things. Chapter Black ends in 1st grade.
Chapter White. 1st to 4th grade were bright days where even my outlook was as flipped as the colors. Friends certainly helped but it was also a time of discovery and world views being opened up. I had a lot of speech therapy until 4th or 5th grade when it stopped. School was always new things and altho I sucked at turning it in I did overall like the learning of homework. I also played a lot of NES and had over 30 games to draw experience from. On top of all that this was when I did school sports like Wrestling for a bit and Kempo Karate from the age of 9-13ish. Had pets and a large trampoleen. This is Chapter White despite my parents splitting and having to adjust to a multi home format. To give a specific shade of color then its Bleached Bone version of white as in paints. Shinny like paint is but muted still the same. No issue with taking stuff in stride... but stuff still happened. Good as I caught a 7'9 Stergeon with almost no help from my dad; he just held me up as I went max effort on the dino in the water. Bad as I heard my mom and dad on repeat yelling at each other for around a year before they split.
Chapter Gold. from 4th to about 11th or 12th grade. best years of my life so far. Lots of stuff happened that I remember fondly and had 2 great step parents in my life. Marge my Step Mom was a Gunslinger of a woman; tough as raw hide and strong as nature. Despite her back being broken and being in a full body shell; she had to get a job waitressing for 4 or 5 hour shifts because simply healing in bed was beyond her ability to handle. Clint my Step dad was a master chef and a jack of all trades. He suffered from a bad doctor call that left him with a straight intestine rather than the norm folded over itself... Doctor read the wrong amount to remove in order to save him from a severe car crash 17 feet was either removed or remained and to put it simply he was toilet bound after eating due to it. Both my step parents were flawed and hurt people. Marge for instance survived her daughter Terra that died young and suddenly due to health issues if I remember right.
But my life was coming down from younger years and I remember them better like meeting my 2 best friends that remain to this day.
Chapter Voided check of the Future... I cannot color this part of my life as the colors were always shifting... but if forced to choose one over the others as a vague indicator then Midnight blue... I graduated 2003; 2005 my life stabilized once more and the whatever the F*** that was I made it through was over. Voided check of the future is to say that my future was stolen from me. Grandma decided my mom needed a change of scene to remove Clint from her world and so she could become sober and functioning... no F'n consideration for me that had no roots in Mountana but being forced to move there with my dad. Only to return a month later to my mom in Idaho falls; and after months of the dampest and darkest months of my life, moving in November to Golden Colorado where my mom found work after the death of my Great grand parents she had been summoned to help and she had then suffered a month or 2 at least of shit factory work at Idaho Potatoes where it was 12 7's basically... in a place that did not seem to prioritize safety. Golden Colorado I met my Nemissis (literally the only person that I should never be alone with as I cannot say he would live); long story short he scamed my mom and Clint out of say 8000$ give or take 1K... and stood more than one thing of sentimental value from me shortly after my unintentional move back to WA to live with my sister rather than her giving me a ticket back as was the first plan. Only to move in April to live with my friend from 6th-8th grade where until December I lived in the living room of a drug traffic central location... in December my mom was back in town and I returned to her.
Chapter Storm Clouds... grey green yellow all the colors of a storm cloud. 2005-2013ish; Normalcy returned as I am today for the most part. Had my first job and a bunch of fun stuff as well as my proper introduction to anime through my friend I met in college 2005. Long story short been floating at zero in my accounts since 2005 so life is always tempestuous.
Current Chapter, Chapter return to Black... Mom got cancer and things went down hill from there. Not sure when they will improve from here. Keep losing family and such and life has become more lop sided against me; as I never knew just how much support my mom gave until after the fact.

Just a clarification as the subtitles didn't explain it well, there are not 2,000 concubines in the Rear Garden, there are 2,000 women made up of concubines and servants. Given the number of servants needed to make the food, do the laundry, clean, as well as directly serve the concubines, the number is closer to 200 concubines and 1800 servant girls. Also the idea of a concubine is a bit different here, they are married to the emperor, and he is duty-bound to provide for them, and they are likewise duty-bound to be loyal to the Emperor. Most of them though are political marriages with noble families and wealthy merchants offering up a daughter as a political move to gain favor with the Emperor. The Emperor would only be sleeping with concubines he takes an interest in, so most of them have likely never been touched by him or anyone. The women he is interested in are sort of competing to see who can provide a male heir that survives, and that woman would become Empress. The servants are mostly under two year contracts where their families sold their services to the palace in exchange for a monthly payment that comes out of the servant's earnings. This is to generate extra money for the household and to have one less mouth to feed. The people who kidnapped her are claiming to be her family so that they get paid a percentage of her earnings, which is why Maomao was so reluctant to reveal her literacy which would raise the amount of money her kidnappers would get.

Apothecary diaries is goated, on par with MT and rezero in my eyes and better than frieren
I really want to watch your videos, but the lack of countdown to start, and lack of letting us know when you pause/unpause makes it literally impossible to sync up my copy of the show to watch along with you. It's a shame because you react to so many shows I'd love to re-watch and see your viewpoints as a psychologist (Mushoku Tensei and Frieren being the two main ones.).
I'm not asking you to change the way you do things, I just wanted to let you know how frustrating it is not being able to enjoy your content.
