Hi, Heather. To answer both of your questions, several drums have the woven edge decoration. The Rav-Vast drum has that as do the Guda and other drums. In comparison, the Meinl Sonic Energy larger drums are less resonant than the Rav-Vast and some of the Guda and flatter looking drums with the woven edge decoration. On your question about dissonance, there would be less because the pentatonic scale omits a couple notes. It's easier playing two A minor pentatonic drums, for example, against each other with less dissonance than two octave drums that have full scales. Both are good questions and I hope that my answer helps. Meinl also makes small pentatonic drums that are less resonant than these larger ones but work really well in the classroom for many reasons, including they can be held much more easily.
This is one of the large Meinl Sonic Energy steel tongue drums. It is slightly over a foot (12 inches) in diameter. We hope this helps answer your question. Thank you for asking.

Do these tend to sound better than the Octave ones with the woven edge decoration?
If I want to also play fast notes would this work better than the Octave drums they have? Less dissonance?
