This film is actually MUCH better than he makes it sound. It is not going for a 'paranod don't trust anyone' vibe, it is going for something more gut-clenching, the knowledge that things below the surface are not always what they seem--like a duck on a pond. Above it is all calm and serene but underwater the feet are paddling like mad. In this film, these vacationers (including--but not mentioned here--the Star of Dark Shadow TV soap opera from the 1960s and 70s, Lara Parker, and Loretta Swit who would achieve fame as Hot Lips in M*A*S*H.) are being tormented and not killed outright, because the Satanists want them afaid, very much afraid. That is clear from the scene where the girl is killed at the beginning of the film. She was mellow at first, but as it became more real to her she was terrified. I really think this film is a must see, and remember, any film you haven't seen is a new release.

    Actress Lara Parker
Pause image at 02:57 The beautiful blonde with the pet dog is known TV actress Lara Parker from the Gothic Cult TV show Dark Shadows and her movie: "Night of Dark Shadows" 1971 from MGM wherein she played the beautiful blonde voluptuous Witch "Angelique" that was hung and then came back as a ghost. She also did a very very popular episode of
Kolchak: The Night Stalker as the Witch in the episode with all the fashion models

I remember seeing this at the drive-in when it first came out in 1974 and it scared the hell out of me,this is probably one of my all time favorite horror movies, the only bad thing about it was the ending, but they had to park the camper because it was getting dark and they had no headlights!,Fonda and Oates are great in it it,I have it on dvd and watch it at least twice a year, never get tired of it,It would have been great if they had made a sequel.

I love this film. Your review was accurate but the tension does build, especially since no one in their right mind would imagine that the entire county is in the cult. The acting was good--especially Lara Parker and Warren Oats. Oh, and the dog was good too.

..Warren Oates and Peter Fonda..dont bother about talk of a remake: there are no such giants of the silver screen today. We didn't know how good we had it back then.

it's a great movie, seen as a whole, it works. Slow build up, great chase sequences. Yes the cops could have killed them at the beginning, but then there would be no movie!! Much better than the drivel made these days.

10-second review: You had a few clever comments, but just on the low hanging fruit. This is actually a pretty scary movie if you go into it in the right frame of mind. Check out the movie poster to see what I mean. Anyhoo, its a little cheesy, sure, but has lots of action and a great creepiness factor and certainly doesn't deserve the good/bad movie treatment. Its worth a viewing, 3/5 scary movie stars.

@Cyber Elder I think that they don't want to kill them because it might attract too much attention. One teenage runaway goes missing: happens all the time. Nationally know industrialist and motorcycle racer disappear: might draw too much attention. They just want to scare them into silence at first, only resorting to trying to kill them when that doesn't work.

    • @oops9437
      @oops9437 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Filmed in my hometown of Bandera Tx. I think it's better than your review would suggest, although I did enjoy your humorous review. It's certainly no Chainsaw, but did you know the bar scene was filmed at Arkey Blue's Silver Dollar? His music is what you hear at the gas station/ BBQ joint in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. This film released when I was 12 and we were about to buy an RV and open a similar world, "We have our own home on wheels and can sleep anywhere,.total freedom..YAAAAY!!!" Every time we found a nice place it seemed common to have rowdy drunk neighbors camp close, and party. Next morning, "Oh wow man, sorry we didn't realize someone else was here." One time rangers arrested some. "This always happens godammit!!! Find a nice place, then bad neighbors." True, when we moved on the situation ended, back to normal world. But the movie softly suggests some satanic cult network (which do exist in Texas). Based on my small-town-living experience,...if a central command dispatched assignments to a bunch of YOKELS,......they'd screw them up.

Sorry to everyone who say's this is a good film.
    It's not.
I recently rewatched it (having seen it on its original release. Yeah, I'm old) and it's horrible.
Everyone who sings the praises of the cast are right. There are a lot of great people involved.
But to those who talk about the rising tension need to rewatch it & count the number of times the main characters take a martini break while being stalked by evil satanists.
On its initial release, the big selling point was the car stunts, which are pretty spectacular. But, aside from that, it's a pretty dull film.
And just to make it clear, THE WILD BUNCH & BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA are a couple of my favorite films, so I love me some Warren Oates.

Getting back to Race With The Devil. If there was a scene that puzzled me was these four tourists are parked in the middle of a deserted area, with their Winabago giving off a lot of light in the dark, chilly night. And yet, the Satanists didn't notice that van parked before they began their ritual in front of that eerie looking tree. How the hell could they have not seen this form of light in the distance while they were committing murder?

For what it is, it's not a bad movie. It's got a good cast, and there are some eerily effective shots/scenes. The pacing is good, and it's not overlong. Your take on the film doesn't hold water for me. Sure there are lapses in logic, but for it's type it is still is above average.

It doesn't surprise me that there are towns ruled by the Occult in this movie. Satan had his claws in politics and law enforcement officials in the real world round about the same time.

This is a great movie - doesn't need to be spoilt with a cynical review.
