    Enjoyed the Terrence Malick reference, love his work.
    I just found you a couple of weeks ago and really like your content. So refreshing to have a channel that’s not about the person, but the work. And your work is excellent.
    I started with your first video, and am now up to “Behind the scenes of Documentary Filmmaking. On set.”
    Would like to more of your perspective on this, a behind the scenes of an actual interview. For example, an interview with a metal sculptor. Research, prep notes, how the interview flows, with flubs, stops, gems, repeats, everything. Just to get a feel for what that’s like. Then a quick edit - the story, the best takes, and whittling it down. What you’re looking for as it comes together.
    Keep up the great work, and best of luck.

    How do you get your talents comfortable in front of the camera? I find most of the time people tend to act unnatural when they have a camera pointed at them. I feel that having that raw natural reaction and emotion is a big part of what makes a documentary.

    • @markbone
      @markbone  3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      You must spend lots of time without the camera around them and then also film them lots when it doesn't matter so they get used to the camera being around. Use the sandwich schedule, I talk a bunch about this in some of the documentary videos I posted back in August :)

    I’m 16 years old and an aspiring documentary filmmaker. Due to my age, acquiring gear, especially expensive gear can be difficult. As you probably know, gear won’t make a film good, the filmmaker would, but a lack of gear can also be limiting creatively. This gimbal could really help me execute unique and cinematic shots to bring value to the work I do. This gimbal could really help me increase the quality of my work. #GIMMEDATGIMBAL

    One question I had about shooting interviews is not about the technical side, but more about the actual content. How do you go about preparing and asking the right questions or getting your subject to say 'the right things'? Do you ask really open questions and just let the subject talk a lot or do you ask more specific questions to get more of the answers you want? For example in Rescate, everything the main character says is really powerful.
    When I prepare interviews I get kind of stressed because I usually have some story beats that I want bring up in the documentary based on my understanding of whatever topic it is about, but I also don't want to 'box in' my subject too much so that he/she is still free to talk about things that I hadn't thought about before. When I ask specific questions I'm afraid I might miss out on some interesting perspectives and I might not get some of those powerful 'quotes' like in Rescate. When I go for more open questions, i'm afraid I won't have enough cohesive material to work with in the edit.
    I hope this makes sense, it's hard to really formulate what I mean.

    Good tip regarding the chair. I've been at a loss more than once to find an appropriate chair for interviews! IKEA should have a cinema line of chairs. Q: Are overweight people considered "full frame" (sorry...Dad joke).

    Did you match the Kelvin to the lamps? It looks like you may have set your lights a little cooler for that color contrast. Just trying to learn! Thanks

    Hey Mark,
    thank you for this BTS! I am considering buying either the FX6 or FX9 but can not decide. Is the FX9 still up to date today or should I wait for the new version? The FX6 is currently not available and it looks like it won't be for the next few months.
