      +cadrician Sounds like a warmer winter for you then cad.... not much snow but a lot of slush and mud?? I will try to get some desert hikes up for you and I hope you enjoy the mountain hike that I just posted. Cheers, my friend! :)

    5 stars!
    Always good to reassess the pack, clothing, nutrition, fitness and environmental factors from trip to trip.
    Whether your "style" is minimal, survival, extended stay, bushcraft, backpacker or underwater welding I say have fun with it : )
    That's the least amount of steel you've ever carried. I'm sure you made up for it the following week.
    Keep rockin' Top Eliminator!

    I think that's a good kit for Mt. Humphrey. Good video. We do some of the same trails. Nice seeing another Phoenix based TH-camr!

    • @Patriot36
      @Patriot36  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ATH Outdoors Hey there ATH!! I mentioned to one of the other viewers that the kit seemed just about right. The chance for injury is a bit higher than some of the hikes I do but the chance of being stranded or left without help are quite low compared to some of the places I go. In retrospect, I didn't have any regrets hiking this particular load up the mountain. Thanks for checking in man!

      It looks like you'll have good weather if you go soon. It would probably be smart to take an extra wind and an extra thermal layer, just in case you have to stop on the trail for any substantial amount of time. Have fun!

    What is the average percent of a bag weight to your body weight , that you recommend ?

    • @Patriot36
      @Patriot36  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Kanzee That's a hard one Kanzee because there's no simple formula due to all the variables. Speaking for myself, less than 1/3 my body weight at the max. My extended stay backpack weighs about 46lbs in winter configuration (I'm a bit over 180) and provides everything that I need for a 7-8 day camp or passage, including food, and 7 liters of water which will last about 24-36 hours in 70-90F temps. My overnight desert kit it about 15-18lbs including 4-5L of water and my overnight forest kit is about 18-21lbs including 4-5L of water. The climbing kit was a little over 12lbs with 4L of water. My simple answer is; (As light as the bag can be and still accomplish the task with a reasonable amount of comfort and safety) Comfort and Safety are broadly subjective which means that everyone will have their own ideas on this topic.

  • @kan-zee
    @kan-zee 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    7 lbs in water, that's a lot of weight, but it does get lighter...so 4 llbs in total weight without water..kewl...think the cloths you wearing , weigh more than your gear. ?? Love your Quick draw, blade. gonna have to mod, mine now..lol

    • @Patriot36
      @Patriot36  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Kanzee Yeah, it's a good amount of water. The consumption rate would be about double at 105F with some humidity... see the triple summit training hike video if you like. Doing some quick math I'd say the clothes I was wearing were just slightly less, the heaviest being my shoes. Ah, thanks! Not much modding needed, I simply hung it upside down with the supplied lanyard that happened to be about the right length. It was tucked under the right, side compression strap to hold it firmly in place.

    • @kan-zee

    Just curious why you didn't record the chats with other hikers? You know that other guy that likes to gear check everyone, lol, would have. Did you ask any of them? Just curious. Would have liked to hear them. Great hike BTW.

    • @Patriot36
      @Patriot36  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +nissanlord Mainly because I was in a hurry and it would have taking more time and formality to ask and explain...haha. I could have caught and talked to a few people in the parking lot but that's the other thing, my dang vids end up so long even without that and I guess it just made sense to omit. Thanks NL!

    Hi patriot, just curious on how your (crkt) blade is fastend to your bag? is it just tied down with the straps? As always awesome video!

    • @Patriot36
      @Patriot36  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Skwy 2034 Just with the factory lanyard loop from the sheath attached to somewhere on the bag. I can't see it right now so I don't remember exactly what part of the bag it's tied to. Just happened to be about the right length.

    Can you do a vid on your urban survival kit?

    • @Patriot36
      @Patriot36  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jay Tee um.... yeah. I'm just thinking, that kit used to be my EDC backpack but now I store it as a dedicated USK. I'll look into it for you and if it's different enough from the previous video, I might be able to do that.

    • @jtyearsley
      @jtyearsley 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome, thnx!

    • @Patriot36
      @Patriot36  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jay Tee Hey Jay Tee, I had a good look at my USK and it's still very similar to what I showed in my EDC USK backpack video, so I probably won't redo that video unless something changes. I do plan on making a one part video of what I have in, what people commonly call a "bug out bag" although I'm not a big fan of the term. That should be this month sometime.

    What a pointless pistol for a bear or mountain lion. Stopped listening after that

    • @Patriot36
      @Patriot36  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Okay, well I didn't elaborate during the video so your comment is understandable. What I'll communicate now is that it's the only firearm I'm willing to take on this type of hike, so it's this or nothing. I've hunted for nearly 40 years and killed all but two game species in my state, with rifles, pistol's, shotguns and bows and I know what's required to kill or deter an overly eager predator. So to be clear, it's not my hunting pistol, but it can easily put a 50gr solid through the boiler room at 8-10 yards which is all I'm looking for during an activity like this. Hopefully that enough explanation.
