    On this episode of One-on-One, Kevin shows off his vintage MEGO Planet of the Apes collection! Mego was the first company to license intellectual properties from movies and comic books. As such, the toys released by Mego in the 1970s are what introduced a young Comic Doctor to the many fantastical characters he has grown to cherish over the years.
    Side Note: Many of the original figures released by MEGO would look great displayed next to their comic books counterparts!
    Kevin Polidano is the Comic Doctor. He has been a comic book collector since the early 80s, and has been pressing comics professionally since 2013. Kevin is happy to answer any questions or discuss comics from your own collection that you are considering having pressed.

    Doc, I finally watched this video after you pointed it out. I was born in 1965, so I'm a little older than you. I loved the planet of the apes toys from Mego and had many of them. I had the treehouse and horse as well as several of the apes characters. I also really enjoyed the TV show and was crushed when it didn't come back for a 2nd season. I can also remember going on vacation with my family and wandering into a costume store that had these beautiful rubber masks for General Urko and Galen/Cornelius. I begged my parents for one of them, but $60 in those days was so difficult to come by. This video brought back many great memories.

    Mego was a little before my time. Kenner Star Wars was my intro to action figures when I was 6, in 1978.

    LOVED Mego and loved/still love Planet of the Apes! I still have my Mego Capt Kirk and Spock. Have Cornelius and Zira but for some reason neither have their outfits. No idea what happened to them but I was young when it did. Mego holds a place in my heart but I just received my Mezco Dr Zaius and he is absolutely amazing! Can't wait for the others to be released.

    Actually from what I understand, Mego didn't loose the bid for Star Wars, they actually turned it down because they had so much going on. A decision that was quickly regretted. I love Mego Apes. They are probably my favorite out of all the toys I grew up with in fact, I used to sew and create custom POTA clothing and sell them in the Mego Museum.

    I find much more interesting the Planet of the Apes movie itself which I saw when I was 14 when it was released in 1968. 2001 A Space Odyssey was also released that year. The movie was based on a sci-fi novel by French author Pierre Boulle. He was an allied spy in South East Asia in World War II, was captured by the Japanese and escaped after 2 years. Rod Serling (yes that Rod Serling) wrote the original movie screenplay based on that novel. The final movie script was written by Michael Wilson. Michael Wilson was blacklisted during the McCarthy era. Wilson had written film scripts for classic movies as It's A Wonderful Life, A Place In the Sun, Lawrence of Arabia, A Bridge on the River Kwai. The novel and the movie has many layers and represents and comments on society, class and caste structure, religions, politics, racism, militarism, nuclear war, MAD (mutual assured destruction). The casting of Charlton Heston itself turns out to be ironic.

      That's for sure!! Funny side note, look up the commercials for the mego planet of the apes on youtube....they use the famous Straus piece "Sunrise" as the background music! Even though the music will forever be associated with 2001, Mego used it for their POTA toy commercials!

    • @peterg167
      @peterg167 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@comicdoctor The music Thus Spoke Zarathustra by Ricard Strauss I just found out was inspired by a novel, poem of the same name by Friedrich Nietzsche written in the 1880's. As an aside English translations of the German Ubermensch in the novel reference either as an overman or Superman. Nietzsche and others wrote of the Ubermensch long before the character introduced in Action comics.

    Christmas 74 I was 10 yrs old Santa brought me the POTA treehouse and 3 ape figures Cornelius ,Zara and Soldier ape shortly in the new yr 1975 I made a terrible mistake,I was 10 going 11 still a kid ,I’ve taken two of my favorite apes to school 5th grade not to play w but just to hav them w me that day ,well my teacher noticed them demanded them held them up for the class to see and embarrass me then kept them to never see them again. A mistake I regretted for yrs. I still hav my original Zara and every “damn stinking bloody” mego ape character made plus all the play sets w boxes. That teacher that day might had taken something but not my LOVE for mego ape figures.

    Was never into the planet of the apes or the toys for them. I was young and remember them being on TV and mostly bored with it. Generally on cable 57, or city TV. I think the toys where before my time. I was an 80s kid. For me it was he man's, gi Joe's and then transformers which lead into thunder cats.

    My opinion of the Mego Planet of the Apes is not very positive. Don't get me wrong I'm a gigantic fan of the Classic films and TV series, which only lasted 3 months, but I found the Mego line to be nothing but a disrespected disappointment. It seems Mego never really had a love for the Planet of the Apes. Bad head sculpts, wrong hair colors, incorrect style clothing, I can go on. They give Cornelius moccasins and Zira cowboy boots, just as an example. If you were just to look at them you can imagine this as a conversation.
    Cornelius: Me luv' em you very much. Me want' em marry you.
    Zira: Well ah declare Ah just don't know. Ma Pappy don't take too kindly to the moccasin wearin kind.
