Audi TT Mk1 - Fixing the roof close sensor on a cabriolet

  • I recently replaced the roof on my Audi TT Cabriolet. When the roof is closed the roof warning light stays on indicating the roof is not closed. So I investigated how the roof knows it is closed and it is down to a sensor switch in the passenger side of the top edge of the windscreen frame where it meets the hood. I need to know how to fix the roof close sensor.
    A quick investigation lead me to the answer. Stick a small section of plastic from a credit card to the switch to make it thicker so it can make contact with the car and close the relay loop.
    Works perfectly.
    So if you are having issues with roof close sensor or you want to fix the soft top on Audi TT, this may be the guide you need. This may help you fixing Audi TT Roof.
    Please do leave me feedback on this video and any other jobs you would like me to do that could help you out.

    your channel is a blessing for the tt owners. Can you make a video about how to fix the wind deflector? i know it's a very common issue. For example , when i bought the car only the one side was going up and down and eventually it stopped moving at all. I only here a clicking noise when i activate the switch

    • @andycharger
      @andycharger  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Eliza and thanks for your comment! I would imagine one of the motors that drive the mechanism for the deflector has failed. It could also be the fuse/relay has failed but I would expect that they are both on the same fuse/relay. Therefore it is more likely to be the motor. I will investigate for you and see if i can do a video. Thanks again and keep on watching the channel!

    IT WORKS!! Awesome! I cut a small piece of a body filler plastic blade that is very slick and slightly tappered 1/2" X 5/8" roughly (12mm X 16mm), cleaned metal microswitch part with alcohol, used 2 part epoxy and waited over night to try it. To my delight...light went off with roof closed. Great tips Andy and loved the illustration too.

    another option (the one I use): do the adjustment on the oposite side by placing a very thin piece of plastic or metal tube over the bar that the hook goes around. This will pull the whole roof over very slightly (to where it should be perhaps) and close the finicky switch on the drivers side.

    • @andycharger

    • @andycharger
      @andycharger  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Simon. If the windows are not going up when the roof is down, do you get the flashing "roof down" light on the dash? It would suggest there is something stopping the roof going all the way down or the sensor that detects its all the way down is reading incorrectly for some reason. Worth checking. Hi done you have any clues on why my roof won't come back up? The roof comes down no issues, windows drop a small amount as normal... but when I hit the switch to come up the windows drop a small amount and go up again... which then doesn't alow the roof to start it's journey back up to the close position.
    Totally baffled with this
    Thanks in advance
    Chris

    • @andycharger
      @andycharger  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Chris. Check both sides of the roof, just about where the roof hinges up to make sure the 2 struts are attached. They are like the ones that hold the boot open and clip over a ball socket on the hood and are secured by a metal clip. They have a habit of popping off.

    • @36chrispye
      @36chrispye ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply.
      Everything looks fine. I have also done a window reset but not helped.
      The window just won't stay in the position (about 1 inch down) while I hold the button to bring the roof up. So the roof just won't start to lift.
      Fingers crossed you have an idea.
      Thanks

    Great video, Andy! Thanks so much for posting these. I'm having the opposite issue. The Folding Top warning light stays on even after the top is all the way down. I take it this is a fault in switch F171 but I'm not sure how to access/clean that switch. Any thoughts?
