Wat Huay Mongkol temple is actually a complex of temples which is the home of the biggest monk statue in the world - the statue of the famous monk, Luang Phor Tuad.
The monk statue is 12 meters tall and 10 meters wide at its base. The statue is placed on a large mound and wide stairs lead to it. The statue can be seen from far away.
The statue is located approx. 18 Km. west of Hua Hin, the royal holiday town. The road leading to the statue goes through peaceful villages and pineapple plantations. The temples complex is located in a park like area with a lake and waterfalls. The park area is very serene and pretty.
The famous monk, Luang Phor Tuad, was born 400 years ago, at the end of the Ayuthaya period, in Nakhom Si Tamarat, (in south Thailand). Luang Phor Tuad was famous for doing miracles and the Thai people believe his image holds protective powers to keep them from nature disasters and the evil eye.
The monk, Luang Phor Tuad, is a holy man admired by many of the Thai people who come to pay him their respect from all over Thailand. There are many tourists who come to see the enormous statue as well so that during the weekends the place is very crowded.
The Thai people also come to pay their respect to Buddha, they circle the statue and walk under the belly of one of the huge elephant statues found next to the monk statue, for good luck. The tourists who visit there also enjoy taking part in these nice ceremonies.
Thai people also believe that carrying an amulet of Luang Phor Tuad keeps the evil eye away and brings them good luck. There are some small shops selling these amulets and some other memorabilia at the park.
